Our story
We decided to launch Counter Journal during a walk alongside Lake Wakatipu in early 2018. Our combined knowledge of print and graphic/product design led us to realise this was the perfect business to embark on together.
We love analogue products, and in particular have a penchant for print magazines. The feeling of opening a new issue of your favourite mag and sitting back with a coffee is a powerfully rewarding experience, and independent publishing is once again on the rise. We focus on slow journalism in our work, and Counter Journal is a publication that will feel as at home on your coffee table as it will at your favourite cafe.
Counter Journal features content from New Zealand and abroad with an aim to share the most interesting stories you never knew you wanted to read; along with beautiful photography and illustrations. We publish a range of interviews, short stories, musings, opinion pieces, articles and research features.
We have a home studio in Mount Victoria where we spend the majority of our time, and travel to Auckland monthly where we are based at Generator in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter. When we aren’t working on Counter you can find us enjoying a strong coffee at a local cafe, and we also love reading, running, visiting galleries and enjoying our favourite cuisines (Italian & Mexican respectively).
