On 15 April, Emily Pothast interviewed Steve Albini, Bob Weston and Todd Trainer of US noise rock band Shellac for the cover story of The Wire 484. Following the sudden death of Albini on 7 May, here we publish the full transcript of that interview complete with an introduction by Emily.

via Mark Deming:

"Schickele Mix" was the best show playing in the radio desert between Lansing and Traverse City, beaming out from WCMU. I'll never forget the episode he played all different versions of Porgy And Bess side by side, introducing a young me to the Miles Davis version for the first time. I was driving home from MSU to visit my parents for the weekend, piloting my great uncle's 1980 T-bird V8/405 that he sold me for $200. Man that car could MOVE. But it ONLY had a radio.

One of many great Peter Schickele shows I got to listen to. Good passage, my radio friend

He wrote more than 100 symphonic, choral, solo instrumental and chamber works. But he was better known, and celebrated, as a musical parodist. Who can forget the “Concerto for Horn and Hardart”?

"As we’ve seen the tools of music recording become more affordable, and now in so many musicians’ hands, I think there’s also a need to examine the basics of music production. With that in mind, I present my version of their groundbreaking work. Let’s call it the Not So Oblique Strategies. Use these suggestions wisely!"

In the spirit of the new year, Earthwork Music is offering a new compilation celebrating the raw and candid sides of our process, in the spirit of self acceptance and authenticity. Introducing: Earthwork Voice Memos, Volume One.

The call went out to the collective to submit voice memos from our phones for a new compilation last year. Artists went through their voice memos and sent in files that they had not planned to release, but would be willing to. What came forward was a collection of tracks that resonate in unique and wonderful ways, and give a glimpse into the oft-invisible pieces of the creative process.

The listener will discover full songs, fun snippets, fragments, ideas on the cusp of being fully realized, covers, prayers, and field recordings, all captured by the artists on their phones for one reason or another. Produced by Seth Bernard and mastered by Michael Dause at TreeTone Studios, with art design by Will Thomas, all proceeds from this bandcamp-only release will support the ongoing efforts of Earthwork Music, encouraging community healing through collective musicianship. Enjoy!
