Anyone ever used one of these? It’s a JZ-1, lawsuit version of the Blue Blueberry. When the original engineer for Blue mics split from Blue he created a new company JZ and then also Violet, I’m a huge fan of these company’s fwiw. The JZ-1 was the first mic he came out with seperate from blue around 2004, and it sounds incredible. I recently found a second one, within 10 serials, and finally got to use them on overheads this week while drum recording. Folks, after 20+ years of doing this I have a new favorite overhead! Silky smooth airy top and lovely mids. Natural and slightly enhanced like it has the perfect eq built in, while having zero harshness. 10 out of 10 stars, fully recommend!🤓✌️

One of my life dreams has been to track drums through 8 channels of preamps of my own design. Today I am getting my first taste of this with 8 channels of Deja Vu in the rack!🤩

Drilling plate holes, sanding and finishing the faceplates today in prep for final assembly and testing of Deja Vu preamps! After a couple day burn in and significant testing they will each be carefully packaged and shipped to their new homes. I underestimated how much effort it would take to get these out the door and yes supply chain issues found me again but we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel on these! First orders will be ship starting next week!

Got a little more moved in today! Getting ready for tracking sessions starting again in a week! Looking forward to it, as I’ve been primarily mastering for nearly 5 years now! Mastering will continue to be a professional focus, but recording great music will always be a passion of mine. Now that I have a beautiful space to hang some mics and make tracks through custom analog gear of my own design, you better believe I’m gunna go for that! 😎🙌✨

Got the new studio up and running this week at the Wilda Mae! Here’s a sneak peak at the new 11x17 control room/listening room. Still plenty of finish work to do but all the acoustic treatment is up and let me tell ya, it sounds great in here! 😎🙌✨

Next to this room I have build a 9x11 iso room for tracking, which should be ready to go in a couple weeks. The great room upstairs will be wired in for a live room, with 20 foot vaulted ceiling, log walls and stone fireplace, this room sounds incredible. All together, the Wilda Mae is turning into a full recording cabin! For the first time in nearly half a decade I’ll be offering recording services beyond online mastering and mixing so hit me up if you have some songs and let’s make some music!!

And we are open for business!! Took all week to transfer my old studio and “finish” this room. Well, it’s not finished, there’s lots of finish work and trim to put up but all th acoustic treatment is up and the room sounds INCREDIBLE! Easily best yet! I took all of the concepts I’ve been experimenting with the last 3 years with my modular room and built them into this room that isn’t “modular”. Full size is 11x17…walls have extensive bass management integrated and wide range diffusion, even a faraday cage around the front half of the room to reduce interference. 🤓

She’s not as pretty as she will be when the lighting and trim is up but she sounds amazing! I’m stoked to say Ethereal mastering is open for business at ! 😎🙌✨

Welp! It’s my last day mastering in this room! As soon as I’m done with todays masters I’m ripping all of this out of here and transporting it 20 miles to my new studio install at ! Deja Vu run update! Parts are finally coming in after several back orders hit me by surprise. Enclosures are finally past customs and should be here this week. I will be finishing these one at a time, fulfilling in order of purchase. Tonight I’m staining the lower half of the iso wall and adding insulation and 4x2x4” absorbtion panels into the wall. If all goes well, this wall will be basically done by the time I pass out tonight! 🤓

Some early customer feedback is coming in on the Deja Vu preamp! Sam is giving my prototype a solid run through in his studio and he sent me this note this morning! He’s using the carnhill equipped version. I’ve got 4 units left in this run for presale!

Running an absolutely fantastic live Jazz record through the mastering chain today! So fun and refreshing to do something so different the normal folk/rock/pop/edm mixes I get most of the time (don’t worry I still love you all!❤️) Jazz takes a really different, often light touch in mastering, esspecially when the mix and performance is excellent like on this project! What a stellar mix from , you crushed it on this one bro! 😎👌

So Im getting this Deja Vu prototype ready to ship today! First time shipping one of these and it almost feels like sending your kids off to school for the first time. 😆 Got this updated to dual carnhill output transformers and dual Heider input transformers for a custom special order and it sounds just killer!

Run update: The main run is still in the cooker, parts are coming in every day and right now first units should ship near the end of September if all goes well! I’m making a few more of these then I was expecting so timing has dragged out a hair beyond my initial target of early September but not to bad! There are many details to making these at the highest quality possible and I’m wanting to make sure I do it 100% the best way out of the gate! Good news is it looks like I’ll have 4-5 extra units avalible for sale, so I’ll be putting those up on the website soon!

I love getting to work on all sorts of music! After 13 years of focusing primarily on mastering, there isn’t much I haven’t mastered but I still get surprised every now and then, which is always delightful! When mastering, the main things for me is preserving the original artistic vision while preparing the audio for release and translation in the modern era. First one I’ve ever used that takes pedals so good! Adventures in Montana! First I almost hit a bear, like it literally jumped out of the ditch and ran in front of my truck and I had to slam on my breaks. Look closely, You will see I’m just barely kissing the Gain Reduction needle, which is all most projects usually need. 😱Don’t be fooled, the magic of this box is way more then “leveling” with classical compression! It adds a 3D seperation and glue, yes at the same time, that is simply always musical. There has not been a project I turn it off for since getting it… THAT is nuts! These lovely VU meters on my @soundperformancelab IRON mastering compressor rarely see more action than this but they sure look cool!🤩 So, indulge me a minute while I open a thought. There is a re-occurring conversation in my career about me charging below what I’m worth and it’s been suggested that maybe I should charge $100 a song to attract new clientele. Let me first say, while I certainly appreciate people thinking I’m worth more then I charge, my personal feeling on this sort of pricing is that it is not authentic to me. While I respect people who disagree, my pricing isn’t a phycological operation to get the most cash out of people for my time. My pricing, currently $60 a song, is based on simply two things: 1) How much do I need to make to provide my family and run my business effectively. 2) Simple economic feedback of supply and demand; ie as long as I can keep up with demand, my pricing will stays out. If either of those things change, I adjust my pricing the least amount I can to make it pencil. Here’s the thing, I am so blessed to get to make music for a living and work with amazing people everyday. Many musicians are struggling financially, and I simply want to help as many of them make sure they have a final record they love and are proud to put out in the world. I’m not here to get rich off of musicians or stoke egos of the elite, though I’m happy to work with labels. My name is Stephen, I live a simple life in the mountians of Montana and I just want to do my part to make the world a better place by filling it with amazing sounding music! The fact that I get to do this at all blows my mind and I’m happy to share my best with anyone i get the pleasure of working with! Here’s a little clip of a song bouncing through the gear today. This solo section is clearly the loudnest part of the song, so this is what I set my gain staging and static EQ too. As you can see, my compressors are just barely turning on and micro dosing the transients with long attack and quick release, which is essentially snare peak control for the most part. This mix is solid and doesn’t require much eq, just a touch on first step on nearly every band, but don’t let that fool you, as the box tone and gain staging are doing a lot here in this chain! It may seem like alot of effort but the kiss of high end analog still does something sonically I can’t fully replicate in the box!
