I wrote a little science fiction story around Frank Jackson's Mary's Room thought experiment. Here's what I think would happen if the experimental philosophers actually tried out the thought experiment 😅

Sages, Mages, and Wisdom Machines is a subsection of my substack that I'm pretty stoked about. It's where I'll be posting my philosophical science fiction. 2 stories are ready to go. Fans of ontological arguments will enjoy the first, fans of Psalm 19 will enjoy the second. Here's a link to S,M,&WM: https://parknotes.substack.com/s/sages-mages-and-wisdom-machines

Everybody out here thinking for themselves and wasting their time. You don't have to think for yourselves anymore. Watch the latest episode to find out why. Trust me.

We're often exhorted to "think for yourself" but philosopher Jonathan Matheson argues that it's actually okay not to think for yourself in way more cases tha...

Spending some time philosophizing in a literal leather armchair this morning. It feels so right. I'm taking some time to reflect on some older journal entries on problems I'm looking to raise in the philosophy of artificial intelligence. I'm also getting some B-roll for a new ParkNotes video on journaling like a philosopher. Couldn't think of a more perfect space than
For those interested, one problem I want to raise is from the philosophy of mind/perception/language called the 'aspect problem'. What aspect of an object does a deep learning system really have "in mind"? I think adversarial examples show that vision systems aren't really "perceiving" wjat we think they are after all. The second problem has to do with the nature of intelligence. Depending on the ontology of algorithms, artificial intelligence systems probably only display what I'm calling "derivative intelligence" which is really a representation of the "intrinsic" intelligence of the programmer. Big if true, especially for the AI ethics of "autonomous" vehicles and weapons systems 👀

If you guys like Parker's Pensées you're going to love my new show, Proverb Peddling! It's a short podcast (15 minutes tops) where I introduce a wise saying that I've collected, I give context and analysis, and then help you apply it to your life. Do yourself (and me!) a favor and click the link, watch the first episode, and subscribe to the new podcast channel:

In this episode of Proverb Peddling, I cover Blaise Pascal's theological anthropology, namely, his idea that man (and woman) is just a reed, the weakest in n...

I really love these "A Very Short Introduction" books. I'm taking a deeper dive into the philosophy of artificial intelligence this semester for an independent study and I'll be reading and rereading these to help me get my bearings.

Finally reached 100k plays on the audio side of the Parker's Pensées Podcast. The YouTube channel hit this years ago but actual audio podcasts are different. This was a milestone I'd been aiming at since the inception of the pod. It's probably a bit arbitrary but a podcast on podcasting I used to listen to always made a big deal about 100k so it still feels good. Thanks for listening!
