The debut of a brand-new feature, “My Show of Shows,” a series of personal essays featuring notable Atlantans writing about the most influential live performances they’ve ever attended. We kick off the series with Atlanta journalist and UGA alum Susan Percy taking readers back to Feb. 16, 1965 when Louis Armstrong triumphantly returned to campus after a university ban on Black performers had been lifted, thanks in part to student protests.

Louis Armstrong's Feb. 16, 1965 concert at the University of Georgia proved both entertaining and historic. UGA grad Susan Percy was there.

Eleven days after the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Los Angeles school teacher Harriet Glickman wrote a letter to Peanuts creator Charles Schulz asking him to consider integrating his popular comic strip. That letter led to the debut of Franklin, the strip’s first Black character on July 31, 1968. Now 56 years later, Franklin headlines his very own animated TV special, “Welcome Home, Franklin,” debuting Friday on Apple TV+. Here’s our conversation with executive producer Craig Schulz.

Following MLK's assassination, a teacher pleaded with Charles Schultz to integrate Peanuts. Now, Franklin takes centerstage in a new special.

Just like Santa, Francine Reed’s visit to her former hometown was lively and quick. So glad she had time for hugs, a glass (or two) of wine and to provide great quotes for an upcoming Eldredge ATL story on one of the most iconic Christmas albums of all time that is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Also, I’ve been writing about her for 30 years and am still learning new things: The outfit she wore to perform with Willie Nelson on “The Late Show With David Letterman” in 2000 hangs above the bar at the Atlanta Hard Rock Cafe!
Merry Christmas, Frani Claus!

Get ready, Atlanta. Thanks to a new collaboration between Our Culture Brewing Company and Creature Comforts, you’re about to have a new favorite seasonal beer — Sweet Potato Ale from the city’s first Black, female and veteran owned craft brewing company. Think of it as your grandma’s most-beloved Thanksgiving recipe, deconstructed in a pint glass. Explains Our Culture CEO Isaiah Smith on why OCB was created: “We didn’t really see ourselves reflected, whether that was physical representation or what’s inside the can. We weren’t really being targeted as consumers of craft beer. We didn’t identify or resonate with the flavor palettes being created by Big Bev craft beer either. It’s not something the established infrastructure was even considering.”

Via a new seasonal sweet potato ale, Atlanta's Our Culture Brewing hopes to inspire other Black-owned brewers to get into the craft beer business.

While they now reside in Southern California, the roots of “Plant Forward,” Richard Blais and Jazmin Blais’ new cookbook, originated on a hill in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park in 2004. “It’s where the story started,” recalls Richard. This was back after we closed Blais and it just felt like the end of everything. There’s a lot of emotion in this book. Yes, it’s a cookbook but it’s a little deeper than that.”
As Jazmin and Richard kick off their book tour this week, here’s our interview with the couple as they discuss developing recipes during the pandemic, how they work together and their former hometown’s new distinction as a Michelin Guide city!

In 2004 Richard Blais and Jazmin Zepeda went to Piedmont Park and ended up planting the roots of "Plant Forward," their first joint cookbook.

Steve McCoy’s longtime Star 94 Atlanta morning show co-host and friend Vikki Locke is helping to organize the Aug. 27 fundraiser at Atlanta’s Punchline Comedy Club.
Locke told Eldredge ATL, “Assisted living is no longer an option and being a caregiver is harder than most people realize. Paying for full time care and his meds is taking its toll on his family and I felt like a fundraiser would help in some small way.”

From 1990 to 2013, Rich Eldredge conducted a series of interviews with the legendary Tony Bennett. Here are some of his favorite moments.

Matthew J. Kelly saw “Wicked” at The Fox Theatre as a kid and it inspired him to pursue musical theatre as a career. This week, he returns to the Fox as assistant dance captain for “Hairspray: The Musical.” The beloved show became a part of the national conversation in March when Tennessee became the first state to ban drag performers in public spaces. In an interview with Eldredge ATL, Kelly says: “We’ve been loving drag queens and ‘Hairspray,’ ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ and ‘Tootsie’ for years. Why is this a problem now in America? We don’t really know right now what’s going to happen with shows like ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ going to Tennessee. It’s kind of scary.”

"Hairspray" assistant dance captain Matthew J. Kelly discusses Broadway's growing diversity efforts and his return home to the Fox.

In the fall of 2016, I had the profound pleasure to sit in a Fairburn, Georgia field and listen to civil rights icon Harry Belafonte discuss his career and his activism: “The fact that I was paid these vulgar sums of money in order to practice this thing that I had fallen in love with was the motive for saying ‘Let’s direct those resources toward places and events that would help to change human history.’”

In October 2016, I sat in a rural Georgia field with Harry Belafonte to discuss his activism and career. It was an unforgettable interview.

Tamrin Goldberg first stepped on the The Fox Theatre stage as an eighth grader attending Paideia. She’s danced on it was a member of the Atlanta Ballet. This week, she returns as a swing in Moulin Rouge The Musical - Broadway. In a Q&A with Eldredge ATL, Goldberg discusses her father’s mission — a former CDC medical officer — of eradicating tuberculosis worldwide and how she’s using her role with the hit musical to educate young people about the disease at the center of the show.

Paideia and Atlanta Ballet grad Tamrin Goldberg is one of the hard-working swings in "Moulin Rouge The Musical." She returns home this week.
