Late Game Heroics

Good morning,

I have been asked by the literal handful (10 to 20) listeners that we get whether the podcast I host with Shay and Joey(a.k.a. late-game heroics) is returning. There is not an easy answer here. This past weekend was the first weekend that I missed podcasting/had something to say. However, after I got sick mid-way through football season, I feel like I didn't set up my cohost to continue without me. I also feel like I didn't do an excellent job as a host making a cohesive setup for the show. I've been listening to old episodes and marking notes on what I could've done.

I also didn't do some of the stuff I was into early on that wasn't popular then. I regret not leaning into WNBA coverage. We were there 2 to 3 years before and didn't have the confidence to lean into what we knew about women's basketball. The same goes for pro wrestling. I saw the wrestling explosion coming, but instead of putting it as a side thing on the podcast, I just kept it to my close friends. Another failure was not talking about the business of sports. Those are all things I've assessed over the last 3 to 4 months.

Our podcast was never about getting listenership. I appreciate the few you listen to, but the podcast was mainly about getting people I know and respect in a room to discuss exciting topics. My co-hosts are my friends and will continue to be there no matter what I decide. The combination of Shays's South Carolina/SEC/Southern sports love and Joey's Ohio State/Big Ten/Northern sports love mixed well, more often than not. I thank them for everything. I'll make my decision in the next couple of days. If I do plan to record again, I'll try to organize it better

It's really fascinating that there has been an obvious unwillingness to focus on development of backup qbs and Olineman in the NFL compared to previous eras. This compressed timeline in the NFL of "win now" has done some real damage to those positions that great technique is needed to maximize what athleticism gives.

On the college level in my little scouting notebook, I look forward to seeing Washington Michael Penix Jr and Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa's names continue to grow in popularity as they head for a collision come Senior Bowl week in Mobile.

To Explain how the Jaguars ended up with Doug Pederson.

Byron Leftwich had the job, according to all reporting. It all fell apart in the final hours at the negotiation table. Leftwich did not want to come into the Jaguars organization with Trent Balke as his GM. Leftwich, like most coaches in this situation hand pick their GM that they wish to work with (See Shanahan, Kyle). Leftwich wanted to bring in current Arizona cardinals VP or pro-Scouting Adrian Wilson(worked together when Leftwich was the OC in Arizona. Leftwich pulled his name out when he dd was denied. Pederson is a great coach but did not have the clout that Leftwich has at this moment. Pederson was looking back in the NFL, and this was the shot back in.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan asked candidates about their willingness to work with Trent Balke during the interview process while Balke was in the room(highly unusual in the interview process). Balke was the GM in charge that eventually fired Jim Harbaugh and gave us the 49ers era of Jim Tomsula and then Chip Kelly. He goes on to be the player personal director, then GM to the Jags as they utterly dismantled the AFC contender before hiring Urban Meyer.

Where does this leave Leftwich, well the Bucs want to keep him house but the interview with New Orleans is happening this weekend and remember Arians could step down and give Leftwich all the power.
