The Western Albemarle boys basketball team has a younger roster this season but the Warriors are handling their early tests well. On Friday, Western passed one of its biggest tests of the year by beating rival Albemarle on the road in OT.

This year's Western Albemarle girls basketball team has a good mix of experienced veterans and talented younger players getting used to playing at the varsity level. The mix was on full display during the Warriors' 67-29 win over Albemarle on Friday night.
“The advantage is those older folks who have done this a bunch can set the tone and bring everyone along with them.”

“We still have a lot of the players from last year. Just being able to work together and kind of know how each other plays — that really helps us.”

This week's Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital Athlete Spotlight is on Austin Williford. The son of former Virginia men's basketball star and current Cavaliers associate head coach Jason Williford, Austin has made a name for himself with the St. Anne's-Belfield School boys basketball team.
“There’s a lot of pressure, especially when your dad is the associate head coach at UVa,” Saints head coach Damin Altizer said. “Austin has done a phenomenal job of always creating his own path. He’s just done an amazing job of being Austin Williford, and not just Jason’s son.”

The "Aidan's Lights" project is working to honor Aidan Peters' memory by bringing lights to the baseball field at Pen Park.

The St. Anne's-Belfield boys basketball team has reached the VISAA Division I state final each of the past two seasons but has not yet won the ultimate prize. The Saints aim to change that this season.

The STAB boys hoops team has made the VISAA Division I state final the past two seasons. This season, they are determined to get back and win it.

The Charlottesville High School girls basketball team had a special 2023-24 season. After opening Jefferson District play with an impressive win over Western Albemarle, the Black Knights see potential for another memorable campaign in 2024-25.

Former Fluvanna County High School standout Luther Bates will be inducted into the VHSL Hall of Fame in 2025.
