Dreams~Hope~
He had heard a voice, a gentle voice, a familiar voice. He had opened his eyes, hoping to see an angel, a savior, a miracle. But all he had seen was a man, a simple man, a kind man. He had smiled at him, offered him a bottle of water, a sandwich, a word of comfort. He had lifted him up, helped him stand, supported him walk. He had told him his name, his story, his mission. He had been a lawyer, a successful lawyer, a respected lawyer. He had been from his country, his tribe, his village. He had been where he had been, he had felt what he had felt, he had dreamed what he had dreamed. He had been lucky, he had been grateful, he had been generous. He had decided to help others, to give back, to make a difference. He had invited him to his office, to his home, to his life. He had offered him a job, a place to stay, a chance to start over.

He had been surprised, he had been touched, he had been hopeful. He had thanked him, he had hugged him, he had followed him. He had looked at his suit, his briefcase, his smile. He had realized that he had not lost everything, that he still had something, that he could still achieve something. But America was not what he had expected. It was cold, harsh, and unfriendly. He had been delayed, questioned, and searched by immigration officers. He had been stranded, abandoned, and betrayed by his smugglers. He had been robbed, assaulted, and shot at by gangsters. He had been rejected, ignored, and discriminated by employers. He had been homeless, hungry, and sick for months. He had lost his passport, his visa, and his dignity.

He had collapsed on the sidewalk, unable to move. He had felt a sharp pain in his chest, a cold sweat on his forehead, a numbness in his limbs. He had looked around, hoping to see a friendly face, a helping hand, a sign of mercy. But all he had seen was indifference, disgust, and fear. He had closed his eyes, hoping to end his misery.
