Leesburg Man Sentenced to Three Years for Shooting Into Teen’s Bedroom Over Game Console
On December 12, 2024, 20-year-old Emerson Josue Martinez Alvarenga was sentenced to three years in prison by Loudoun County Circuit Court for a series of firearm-related charges, including maliciously shooting into an occupied building. The charges stemmed from a June 2023 incident in Leesburg that began as a dispute over a video game console and escalated into a shooting that could have been fatal.

The incident occurred on the evening of June 29, 2023, when a teenage resident of a Leesburg apartment heard a knock at his door. Through the peephole, he recognized Martinez Alvarenga, someone he knew, standing outside with another man. The teen, aware of their ongoing dispute, chose not to open the door.

Shortly after, the teen received a voicemail from Martinez Alvarenga about the console dispute and returned to his bedroom. Moments later, a gunshot rang out. A bullet tore through an exterior wall, entered the teen’s bedroom, and struck a pillow on his bed. Terrified, the teenager hid in a closet and called for help.

Leesburg Police responded quickly and uncovered evidence connecting Martinez Alvarenga to two prior incidents of brandishing a firearm. The investigation led to his arrest, and officers recovered a firearm from his residence.

In court, Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Anna Hammond underscored the severity of Martinez Alvarenga’s actions. “He terrorized the community for six weeks. The facts are egregious; he shot into a bedroom over a video game.” Hammond argued for a sentence exceeding Virginia’s guidelines.

Defense attorneys highlighted the defendant’s uncertain future, noting that deportation to El Salvador was likely and could result in further imprisonment.

Judge Thomas D. Horne, however, expressed dismay over the case. “Your conduct is outrageous … defies civility,” he said, dismissing the one-year-and-four-month sentence recommended by guidelines as insufficient.

Martinez Alvarenga’s three-year sentence serves as a stark reminder of how disputes can escalate into dangerous, life-threatening actions. Thanks to swift police work and a thorough investigation, no one was hurt—but the outcome could have been much worse.

National Park Service Designates Loudoun’s Historic Courthouse as National Landmark

The Charles Hamilton Houston Courthouse in Leesburg has officially joined the ranks of the nation’s most treasured historic sites. On December 13, 2024, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland finalized its designation as a National Historic Landmark, alongside 18 other sites. The recognition is the highest federal honor for a property’s historical or architectural significance.

The courthouse, located in the heart of Leesburg at the Loudoun County Courthouse Complex, was built in 1894. Despite some interior changes in 1956, the building retains much of its original integrity, including the courtroom furnishings and the iconic iron gates outside. This authenticity played a key role in the designation by the National Park Service (NPS).

The courthouse’s designation follows a local push to highlight its significance. Just this past summer, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors held a ceremony naming the building after Charles Hamilton Houston, a trailblazing civil rights attorney. Known as the “Man Who Killed Jim Crow,” Houston led a historic defense during the 1933–1934 George Crawford trial.

Houston and his all-Black legal team, organized by the NAACP, defended Crawford, who was accused of murdering two white women in Middleburg. The case was pivotal, exposing the injustice of all-white juries and showcasing the expertise of Black attorneys. The trial became a cornerstone in the NAACP’s fight to challenge segregation through federal law.

The courthouse’s historic courtroom remains much as it was during that trial. Its preservation, coupled with the role the trial played in advancing civil rights, makes the courthouse a lasting symbol of both Loudoun County’s and the nation’s complex history.

This designation solidifies the courthouse as not only a local landmark but also a national one, reminding us of the progress driven by individuals like Houston.

‘Home for the Holidays’ Fee-Waived Adoption Event December 14 &15

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) will host its annual fee-waived pet adoption event, ‘Home for the Holidays,’ Saturday and Sunday, December 14 & 15, 2024,11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., at the Animal Shelter, 42225 Adoption Drive in Leesburg. Adoption fees will be waived for all available pets, which includes cats, kittens, dogs, and small pets.

With adoptions for adult animals slowing significantly, a number of cats and dogs have been waiting for families for months, said Animal Shelter Operations Manager Melissa Heard. “We have playful cats like Teasel, and goofy dogs like UberEats, and people unfortunately just pass them by every day for weeks on end,” said Heard. “It really takes a toll on these sweet animals who have lived in homes, and then had their worlds turned upside down when they arrived at the shelter.”

All dogs adopted during the Home for the Holidays adoption event will head home with one month of free training classes. All adopted pets will receive a goodie bag full of supplies.

“The holidays are a time for hope and connection, not just for people but for the countless pets in shelters waiting for a family,” said Heard. “No pet should spend the season alone. This is our chance to match them with loving homes and make the holidays brighter for everyone.”

The event will be full of holiday cheer with goodie bags for adopters and more. Prospective adopters can view available pets online at loudoun.gov/animals. The standard adoption screening process still applies during this promotion; most adoptions can be completed on the same day.

All dogs, cats and rabbits adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered and receive a microchip which is registered to their adopter. Dogs and cats also receive age-appropriate vaccinations.

Sustainable Food Waste Disposal Comes to Leesburg
Leesburg has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the launch of its first residential composting pilot program. Starting today, town residents can drop off food waste at a 24/7 site located in the Liberty Street parking lot at 204 Liberty Street SW.

This program offers an eco-friendly solution to keeping food scraps out of landfills, which can significantly reduce methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas. Instead, the waste will be turned into nutrient-rich compost that strengthens soil health and reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers. Healthy soil can also act as a “carbon sink,” helping to absorb and store greenhouse gases.

How It Works

The service is free for Leesburg residents. To participate:

Bring food scraps to the drop-off bins.

Either dump the food directly into the bins or ensure any bags used are compostable (certified BPI or OMRI).

Do not leave non-compostable containers or waste around the site.

This program accepts food waste, including items like meat and dairy, which are typically unsuitable for backyard composting. However, yard waste, trash, and recycling are not allowed.

Local contractor Monster Organics will manage the site, collecting, cleaning, and maintaining the bins weekly.

A Push for Sustainability

Deb Moran, Leesburg’s Sustainability Manager, emphasized the importance of composting in reducing environmental impact. “Recycling is valuable for plastics, metals, and paper, but it still consumes energy. Composting prevents emissions from happening altogether,” said Moran. “This program is a simple yet impactful way for residents to make a difference.”

For more details, including what can and can’t be composted, visit www.leesburgva.gov/composting. The town will also host a Facebook Live segment on December 20 at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the program further.

This initiative not only supports a cleaner Leesburg but also aligns with broader environmental goals by encouraging residents to take small, meaningful steps towards sustainability.
