Introducing the Reporter 2023--24 Winter Issue.

As difficult as these conversations are, mental health issues are prevalent at universities across the country. It is important that communities recognize the drivers behind an increasingly hostile social and academic landscape, and that they take steps to address these issues in the long term.

This special edition of Reporter focuses on conversations concerning mental health, access to healthcare and support systems, and how those in power choose to respond to crises.

Please note, this issue addresses serious topics, and a content warning is provided. Let’s come together as a community to engage in these critical conversations. Grab your copy now on stands around RIT’s campus, or online at http://reporter.rit.edu.

A Facade of Diversity: With conservatives and the Supreme Court attacking accessibility to higher education, now is the time to discuss diversity at our institutions. Is RIT doing enough to sponsor diversity, particularly with regards to race?

Despite any reassurance from the university about its equitable and inclusive policies, a quick look on the quarter mile will tell you that we are falling short. Read this opinion piece on RIT's lack of diversity on the Reporter website or in our October publication.

Art generated by artificial intelligence has become a controversial topic that, depending on who you ask, evokes either anxiety or excitement. While some see AI art as a threat to their careers, others see it as a tool that can enhance their workflow.
Members of the RIT community have thoughts on both sides of the argument, and they shared how the issue has affected them personally.

What a night of musical magic! The Jazz Ensemble took the stage at Ingle Auditorium in the heart of RIT's Student Union Alumni Center on October 14th, 2023. From "Two Seconds to Midnight" by Alan Baylock to the groovy "Ahunk Ahunk" by Thad Jones, they had us swaying to their jazzy tunes.

One of the band members, Andrew Dey performed an arrangement of "Party by the Waterfall" by Naoto Kubo, straight out of Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey!
The ensemble's vibrant sound and undeniable dedication shone through every note.

14/11/2023

On Oct. 15, RIT hosted a remarkable event in which Deaf and Deafblind individuals came together to walk across campus with their white canes, celebrating the essence of independence and equality.

The white cane is not just a tool; it is blind individuals' bridge to a world filled with opportunities. It extends their senses, helping them navigate with confidence, find their way through obstacles and explore their surroundings. When you see someone using a white cane, remember that it is their way of understanding the world around them. No need to shout warnings or steer them. If you are behind the wheel, do the right thing and give them the right of way.

White Cane Awareness Day has a rich history, with its goal evolving from safety to independence. Let’s celebrate this empowering journey and acknowledge the white cane as a symbol of freedom that, according to President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, permits the blind to “come and go on [their] own."

05/11/2023

Nathaniel Rochester Hall, a building originally dedicated to the land speculator and active participant in the slave trade — who was responsible for founding the settlement that became Rochester, N.Y. — has been renamed to Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry Hall. A direct descendant of the 19th-century Rochester-based abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Perry led a life of philanthropy and political activism well into the 20th century.

While many students and Rochester residents may view renaming as a positive change, there is still the matter of the entire city and even the airport code remaining a firm reminder of Nathaniel Rochester.

The RIT/NTID community gathered for a candlelight vigil on October 26, 2023. The gathering at Frisina Quad was an opportunity for community members to remember, Michael Altieri, an NTID/RIT student who died by su***de earlier this week.

Candles flickered as symbols of remembrance for a young person with a
'bright mind and future,' as described by his friend, Jordan Scharf. Participants of the vigil listened to Gerard Buckley, President of NTID, Dr. Munson, President of RIT, and others, who emphasized the importance of unity and reaching out for help when needed.

The vigil was organized by the NTID Student Life Team, reminding the community that we're never alone in our struggles.
