It took two and a half years to make the dream of Idealist come true, the dream of an independent and authentic art platform for talented up-and-coming artists from around the globe. This autonomous project was realized in Berlin, Germany, supported exclusively by the idealism of the artists and doers, free of commercial restrictions and without the support of big publishing houses. Our contributors are all passionate about what they do and this platform offers them the unique possibility to unfold their passion freely, to test themselves, to explore their personal limits without constraints. Idealist does not offer the usual art reproductions. All works presented here have been created by select artists exclusively for this project. The artists in dialogue with the publisher and curator have chosen the paper grade as well as the number of pages available for their work conceptualizing the theme. The paper has been refined or processed where necessary. In this way, Idealist is able to grant each contributor maximum individual artistic freedom as well as a personal showroom that no other medium offers. The circulation is limited to 5,000 numbered copies. Much like in a gallery, each issue of Idealist changes the theme of the group exhibition as a way to bind the extremely varied artists by demanding that they focus on this one theme in presenting their unique interpretation of it. The artists are completely free to choose how they wish to interpret the theme. However, they are asked to put the limits of a two-dimensional medium to the test while integrating the format into their conceptions. This is a completely new experience especially for performance or installation artists who must transfer their works from three-dimensional space into the format of an art book. The printed medium as a new action platform eliminates the restriction of a performance or installation space and forces the artist to generate new implementation options as well as explore boundaries. The work of Andreas Sell is an especially impressive example of how an artist can handle those options. During his performance he has torn two pages of his own contribution out of each of the 5,000 printed art books, thus making every single book a truly unique original. This art platform is based on the ideals of a young and potent generation full of dreams and visions; a generation that seeks freedom, self-realization, diversity in all areas of life, and cross-cultural exchange. To realize these dreams takes commitment, creativity, openness, risk-taking, and above all Kampfgeist or a fighting spirit. Without Kampfgeist, no great challenge can be mastered, no dream will become a reality, which is why the first issue of Idealist is devoted to this fundamental topic that embodies not only this long-term project but also the spirit of all artists who have been struggling for years for the appreciation of their work and for their very existence. Fifteen up and coming artists from twelve different nations working in various genres created their own unique interpretations of the theme of fighting spirit or Kampfgeist. This platform is a closed system; everything that is presented has never been published before and must not be published in any other medium. These are original works designed exclusively to conceptualize in a two-dimensional format the predefined theme. Originals and limited special editions of some of the art presented can be purchased directly from the artists who will receive 100 percent of the proceeds. Idealist is a limited art and design object which delivers a unique sensual art experience for sophisticated collectors in addition to being a marketing platform for young visual artists. The limited and serially numbered circulation of 5,000 copies make it highly exclusive. Idealist ist available in select art bookstores, museum shops, galleries, and online via our website.
