Indie filmmaker friends! We are looking for cool retro looking movie covers (60s-early 00s specifically) we can turn into fake vhs boxes for our Video Castle set in Dead Format! Do you have a cool poster you would like to see on the shelf of a 90’s video rental store? Message me with a pic!

We are of course looking for horror/sci-fi/fantasy, but huge bonus points if you have a comedy, action, thriller, or family film! We are in need of ALL genres to fill in the gaps between the faux movies we’ve been designing for the film.

Aside from the awesomeness of having your film on the shelf of a (faux) video store and helping out some fellow indie filmmakers, you will also receive a credit in the film!

Hey folks! I will be signing books and movies this Saturday (October 12th) from 1-3pm at Vortex Books & Comics (477 Locust St., Columbia, PA) alongside Clay McLeod Chapman!

I’ll have paperbacks of Please Don’t Tap on The Glass (where you can read the original short story version of Dead Format!), DVDs of I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday, and dvd copies of the super out of print Suburban Holocaust: Reel Splatter volume 1!

Since this is the first time I’m crawling out of my hermit pit and doing an in person signing in quite awhile, I wanted to do something special, so the first 15 people who come and pick up a book or movie will get a free Video Castle rental case sleeve prop from Dead Format!

Wednesday nights are made for learning how to disassemble, clean 20 years worth of fake blood and grime out of a chainsaw, and then replacing the old chain with one made from laser cut foam so the teeth aren’t sharp and dangerous for the actors handling it on set. Safety first!

Dead Format pre-production has taken me down some strange paths, and I have to say this is one of my favorites so far.

Excited to have spent a significant portion of the day creating, printing, cutting, laminating, and now cutting again, the first round of personalized Video Castle membership cards for thr Dead Format IndieGoGo backers! I hope that the fact that I’m literally making these personally by hand means something extra to the beautiful folks who backed the film.

If you purchased the Join The Kingdom, Assistant Manager, or Store Manager perks, your membership card will be shipping to you this week.

I am also going to be signing and shipping all of the copies of Please Don’t Tap on The Glass and I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday from the Back Catalog and “The Book Was Better!” perks.

In other Dead Format news, we are knee deep in our first wave of casting and are very excited to be narrowing down the potential leads. This is going to be super difficult out to choose!

Did you hear the big news??? We are incredibly excited to announce that Damian Maffei will be playing the Reaper in Dead Format! Damian is best known as the Man in The Mask in The Strangers Prey at Night, Devil in Haunt, and Johnny Slaughter in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Video Game. Reel Splatter fans will recognize him as Simon, the dad in I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday! We are super stoked to be working with Damian again.

Today also marks the final 5 days of the Dead Format campaign. We are currently at 92% funded and need YOUR help getting to the finish line! Details below.

Here's a little behind the scenes peek at the photo shoot for the fake vhs tape of Weekend at Escobar's (based on the short story in Please Don't Tap on the Glass) we're doing for the video store set in Dead Format!

Let's just say that anyone who doesn't grab the "Staff Picks" perk (a random screen used fake movie box, signed by yours truly) on the Dead Format campaign is going to be very upset...We did our first photo shoot for the covers and "screenshots" on the back of the fake VHS tapes for the movie, and well...

Now keep in mind these are .raw pictures straight out of the camera with no editing whatsoever, so they will look much much nicer when they're cleaned up and on the boxes. I normally wouldn't post stuff this early on in the process, but I am goddamn giddy right now so I had to share some.

The "movies" pictured are Weekend at Escobar's (from the short story in Please Don't Tap on The Glass" and L***r Con. And this is just the tip of the iceberg for what we have planned...

“Make tonight a Movie Knight!”

This guy (who is over 6 feet tall!) will be the centerpiece of the Video Castle store set. After scouring the internet for an affordable suit of armor, I ended scoring this at an antique store out in the middle of nowhere way back in February. We drove about an hour and half with this thing damn near touching the windshield, but he made it home without killing us.

To turn him into our mascot, Movie Knight, this weekend I went out to the craft store and found some cool shiny fabric to cut into a cape, the chain linking it on the collar was leftover from the wall mount of the neon sign for the video store. To make the helmet plume, I got some socks at the dollar store and spray painted them yellow, then hot glued feathers from a Party City boa to it. This I slipped over the little metal ornament that was on his helmet and voila!

The tapes he’s holding are actually resting in a wad of crumpled up newspaper that I duct taped behind shield and the popcorn bucket
Is actually filled with newspaper with popcorn glued to it.

There will be two versions of this prop, this is the 1996 video store flashback version. The modern version will have a tattered & sun faded cape and will be falling apart.
