The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor National Heritage Area are descendants of enslaved West Africans, have lived along the Southeast U.S. coastline for nearly 400 years, preserving their unique culture, language, and deep connection to the land. Their spiritual and cultural heart is St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Yet, rising sea levels and powerful storms now threaten their homeland, putting their traditions and history at risk. 🌍🏝️

Increased flooding and climate change have already displaced many, forcing hard choices between restoring the land or relocating. While federal funding is helping, it’s not enough to protect their heritage. Leaders and advocates continue to fight for preservation and support. But with land connection being so vital to their identity, the stakes couldn't be higher. 💔💪🏾

We’re actually handing down an old tradition that seems brand new,” says Iickomique Belmontes, a “green” artist in Chicago who’s dedicated to natural materials and dyes. 🧵🌿 Together with Emmanuel Edwards, owner of the The Goody Vault, the duo launched a mending class series earlier this year, transforming their vintage showroom into a hub of sustainable fashion. 🧶✨

Edwards, who grew up in Alabama surrounded by the art of quiltmaking, reflects on the roots of mending: “This was birthed out of hardship and limited resources, and now everybody loves it.” His grandmother's patchwork legacy lives on as he repairs and reimagines garments from as early as the 1910s—vintage denim, flannel shirts, and military wear. 🌱♻️
Through intricate threading and creative stitching, the series invites people to breathe new life into their clothing, making sustainability accessible to all. 🪡💚

A Black-owned barbershop in Florida, Central Station Barbershop & Grooming, is taking education into its own hands by promoting literacy for Black and Brown children 📚✂️. Through free books and encouraging reading in a welcoming space, the shop is creating a unique blend of community, culture, and learning. By empowering kids to improve their literacy skills, they’re helping to build a stronger, more confident generation, while also fostering academic success and a love of knowledge.

"Seeing the things that were impacting our community, I understood the importance of ownership and entrepreneurship and different things like that. So, I wanted to step out on my own and build my own reputation and my own barbershop my way."

In 2014, I founded WeINSPIRE, which started as one day dedicated to spreading positivity and inspiration to people worldwide. Nine years later, we’ve grown into an international community powered by people doing good for people seeking joy. We have generated 140 impactful stories that brought good news highlighting the impact of changemakers.

As we head towards our 10th anniversary in 2024, it is critical that we enter into our 10th year as a more sustainable organization. Effective July 1st, we, the National Board of Directors, will temporarily pause day-to-day operations.

What started as a goal of law school ended up being a culinary career that has changed her life.
