Announcement: AI Music Tools Prohibited in Our Competition

In our ongoing mission to celebrate the art of film scoring, we have made the decision to prohibit the use of AI music tools in answering our competition assignments. While we embrace technological advancements, our focus remains firmly on discovering and nurturing film composers.

Our competition has proudly upheld the banner of film scoring artistry for the past 10 years, and our mission statement is clear: we seek for amazingly talented composers. We are not looking for music producers, engineers, or AI prompters, but rather for individuals who are staying true to the art of composition and are leveraging technology as a supportive element. These are the talented participants every year of the Oticons Faculty competition that we believe create the works that truly capture the essence of film scoring.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our competition and the art-form we all hold dear. Together, we will continue to celebrate the power of human creativity and the timeless magic of music in film.

Curious about what is behind this year's Assignment #3 "Envision the Notes"?

You will be called to score the opening scene of a tragic love story taking place in the Aegean Sea in the 1930s. A young French woman flees the repression of her French upbringing and follows a young sailor to the Greek island of Syros, where she will end up sliding into a vortex of desire, passion and death, after getting involved in a love triangle.

This is Claire Cowan, a brilliant composer from New Zealand. Claire not only won the Oticons Faculty competition in 2023, but she was the first one that made the Oticons agency founders to offer her to represent her, even before she was announced Grand Winner of the competition. A beautiful person, a genius composer, the ultimate example of what the Oticons Faculty film music competition is truly about.

And Claire has a message for you. So watch this video!

If you wish to be the next one to travel with us and hopefully experience something as life changing as Claire did, register to our 2024 edition of the Oticons Faculty Film Music Competition!

Sometimes we forget to talk about the truly amazing global community we created all these years. We do not attend Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards every year, but the times we did in the past with any of our winners, it surely made an impression to them; hence their return to the scene of the crime!

The year of the inception of Oticons Faculty Film Music Competition was 2014. That year our winner was the super talented Benjamin Woodgates from London. It was the year we met in Ghent in person the late Johann Johannsson, Dan Romer and so many more. In 2019, our winner was John Konsolakis from Athens. We went to Festiwal Muzyki Filmowej w Krakowie together and that was it. He started going to all the major festivals since then, incl. the World Soundtrack Awards.

Today, Ben has an agent and a publisher, and John is working closely with Oticons - Film Music Composers Agency on various internal projects, plus is represented by the agency's founder, George Christopoulos.

Film Music Festivals and Film Festivals, can change lives. At the very least broaden horizons and one's professional network. That is our contribution to our community!

The AWARD for our Winners is to be where the Industry is.
It is to learn more about the industry. Meet the people in it. Learn from them, interact with them, maybe even end up working with them.

Albert Stensen attended Krakow FMF in May 2023 and he attended the Workshop that took place at the European Krzystzof Penderecki Music Centre before the festival's other events - masterclasses, panels & concerts - started in the city. Listening to legendary composer, and Oticons Faculty jury member, Miriam Cutler and Air Studios engineer, Nick Wollage, was the perfect start of his trip.

Then... we stumbled upon old friends (Steven Price, Nainita Desai, Patrick Doyle, Dirk Brossé etc) and made new ones (Simon Franglen, composer of Avatar)!

What was astonishing though is that 2 former Oticons Faculty Film Music Competition Winners, were at the festival as attendees and active participants of the Workshop. John Konsolakis and Yakov Alexandrov, their talent in conjunction with their persistence, makes them the wonderful and successful composers they are today.

Once again the Oticons Faculty family (and community) had a strong presence at the amazing Festiwal Muzyki Filmowej w Krakowie!

It's been a rollercoaster since we announced the Winners of the 2023 Oticons Faculty Film Music Competition and till now that we announced the launch of the 2024 edition.

We had many... "firsts" and we can't wait to share them all. But let's start with the most significant one.

It was the first time a winner from another continent other than Europe, and it was from Oceania and specifically New Zealand. Claire Cowan amazed not only the jury but also our talent agency. For the first time the Oticons Agency immediately offered to sign her and to become a represented client in its roster of composers.

A seasoned composer like Claire needs just the right help to enter the film industry. And while representing one is a good starting point, having them tagging along at one of the 3 biggest Film Festivals in the world, is the best next step.

For 5 days, Claire Cowan and Oticons founder and talent agent, George Christopoulos, attended the Venice Film Festival. Oticons is a long partner of the Industry Program of the Festival and in particular Final Cut Venice. It was five days of meetings and events and screenings and awards.

We are excited that Claire, our Oticons Faculty Winner of 2023, was part of that journey. And will be for the next to come. Onwards & Upwards!

We pride to say that THIS IS WHAT A FILM MUSIC COMPETITION IS ABOUT!

It is the time of the year that composers focus to complete the Oticons Faculty Assignments and submit them before the deadline.

Many times they told us that they seek inspiration to the works of composers of the previous editions on Soundcloud.
