“Carol’s Daughter”
Lisa Price, born on May 18, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York, is a beauty entrepreneur and the founder of Carol’s Daughter, one of the first African American-owned natural hair and skincare brands to achieve national success. What started in her kitchen with a love for fragrance and aromatherapeutic oils transformed into a multi-million-dollar beauty empire that continues to thrive more than 30 years later.
Encouraged by her mother, Carol, Price began selling her homemade creams and hair products in 1993 with just $100 in cash. Selling at flea markets and out of her living room, her handmade products like Almond Cookie, Hair Milk, and Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie quickly gained a loyal following. By 1999, she opened her first boutique in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood, and her business expanded to mail-order, website sales, and retail partnerships.
Carol’s Daughter made history when it became one of the first natural haircare brands to be featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2002. By 2005, celebrity investors like Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, and Mary J. Blige helped expand the brand, leading to the opening of a flagship store in Harlem. Price later partnered with HSN in 2008, introduced the now-iconic Monoi Oil Collection in 2011, and took Carol’s Daughter mainstream, launching in Target and 30,000 retail stores nationwide.
In 2014, Carol’s Daughter joined the L’Oréal family, a move that allowed the brand to expand its reach while maintaining its commitment to natural, high-quality ingredients. Price continues to play a vital role as Founder while serving on L’Oréal USA’s Executive Committee to provide insight on Black culture, diversity, and inclusion.
Beyond beauty, Price has dedicated herself to community empowerment and entrepreneurship. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including the National Black MBA Association’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
In 2017, Carol’s Daughter was honored with a permanent exhibit in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, recognizing its influence on the natural haircare renaissance.
