Ja Keen's pick for this week's CRT recommendation is The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs! What an important analysis about the place Black women who instill and nurture the ideas our recognzied thought leaders fought for. This is a must read!

In her groundbreaking and essential debut The Three Mothers, scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America's most pivotal heroes: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin.

Much has been written about Berdis Baldwin's son James, about Alberta King's son Martin Luther, and Louise Little's son Malcolm. But virtually nothing has been said about the extraordinary women who raised them, who were all born at the beginning of the 20th century and forced to contend with the prejudices of Jim Crow as Black women.

Berdis, Alberta, and Louise passed their knowledge to their children with the hope of helping them to survive in a society that would deny their humanity from the very beginning--from Louise teaching her children about their activist roots, to Berdis encouraging James to express himself through writing, to Alberta basing all of her lessons in faith and social justice. These women used their strength and motherhood to push their children toward greatness, all with a conviction that every human being deserves dignity and respect despite the rampant discrimination they faced.

These three mothers taught resistance and a fundamental belief in the worth of Black people to their sons, even when these beliefs flew in the face of America's racist practices and led to ramifications for all three families' safety. The fight for equal justice and dignity came above all else for the three mothers.

These women, their similarities and differences, as individuals and as mothers, represent a piece of history left untold and a celebration of Black motherhood long overdue.

Ja Keen wanted to introduce one of his favorite women characters from a fantasy historical series in honor of . If you haven't been introduced to the shadowhunter universe yet, what are you even doing? You will love this expansive world that combines religion, mythology, and so much more to bring you something you haven't seen before. Meet Theresa Gray, also known as Tessa!

"I am Theresa Gray, daughter of a Greater Demon and Elizabeth Gray, who was born Adele Starkweather, one of your kind. I was the wife of William Herondale, who was the head of the London Institute, and I was the mother of James and Lucie Herondale. Will and I raised our Shadowhunter children to protect mundanes, to live by the Laws of Clave and Covenant, and to keep to the Accords. Once, I lived among the Shadowhunters. Once I might almost have seemed like a person to you."

Theresa Gray was born to an unmarked Shadowhunter named Elizabeth Gray and the Greater Demon, Belial, disguised as the mundane Richard Gray—Elizabeth's husband and the man who would raise her as his own, and whom everyone believed was her father. Under normal circumstances, children of Shadowhunters and demons would be stillborn, but Elizabeth was able to give birth to Tessa not only because she bore no runes, but also because she wore the clockwork angel.

Celebrate by getting to know one of the most prolific freedom fighters in history! Be inspired by her "by any means necessary" attitude in service of Black liberation! Then act!

The definitive biography of one of the most courageous women in American history "reveals Harriet Tubman to be even more remarkable than her legend" (Newsday).
Celebrated for her exploits as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman has entered history as one of nineteenth-century America's most enduring and important figures. But just who was this remarkable woman? To John Brown, leader of the Harper's Ferry slave uprising, she was General Tubman. For the many slaves she led north to freedom, she was Moses. To the slaveholders who sought her capture, she was a thief and a trickster. To abolitionists, she was a prophet.
Now, in a biography widely praised for its impeccable research and its compelling narrative, Harriet Tubman is revealed for the first time as a singular and complex character, a woman who defied simple categorization.
"A thrilling reading experience. It expands outward from Tubman's individual story to give a sweeping, historical vision of slavery." --NPR's Fresh Air

An incredibly touching story about a Black father's love and struggle to make amends! As Black families continue to reconcile q***rness and family, author Daniel Black doesn't shy away from that tension but confronts it head on.

"As Jacob lies dying, he begins to write a letter to his only son, Isaac. They have not met or spoken in many years, and there are things that Isaac must know. Stories about his ancestral legacy in rural Arkansas that extend back to slavery. Secrets from Jacob's tumultuous relationship with Isaac's mother and the shame he carries from the dissolution of their family. Tragedies that informed Jacob's role as a father and his reaction to Isaac's being gay.

But most of all, Jacob must share with Isaac the unspoken truths that reside in his heart. He must give voice to the trauma that Isaac has inherited. And he must create a space for the two to find peace. "

Find out what cannabis strain Krystal paired with this incredible story of family, justice, and revenge by Xiran Jay Zhao. This was a great read for us from a nonbinary author. During a time when states and governments are trying to dictate who nonbinary and trans identifying people can be, it's great that Xiran is proving they can be anyone. This story flips our thoughts of justice and we definitely enjoyed the ride!!

The podcast is available now on Amazon music!!

"The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.

When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead."

We are inviting you to read along with us this month! We have 4 amazing books, 4 incredible cannabis pairings, and 4 enlightening conversations prepared for you!!! Issa 4 for 4 lol

Colson Whitehead brings us Harlem Shuffle, a heist adventure in 3 parts! “The heist goes wrong and a cast of criminal figures enter Ray's life, forcing him into a personal struggle between aspects of his fractured self. The novel is divided in three parts and covers three separate capers, set in 1959, 1961 and 1964. It culminates with the Harlem riot of 1964.”

You all know Gabrielle Union, phenomenal actress and writer. Now, she lets us even deeper into who she is with You Got Anything Stronger! “Remember when we hit it off so well that we decided We’re Going to Need More Wine? Well, this time you and I are going to turn to our friend the bartender and ask, You Got Anything Stronger? I promise to continue to make you laugh, but with this round, the stakes get higher as the conversation goes deeper.”

Introducing Hari Ziyad and their debut memoir Black Boy Out of Time. During the height of Black q***r writers sharing their personal stories, this memoir stands out with its ability to ask and answer huge questions about gender, Blackness, and our responsibility to Black children. “An eloquent, restless, and enlightening memoir by one of the most thought-provoking journalists today about growing up Black and q***r in America, reuniting with the past, and coming of age their own way.”

Finally Caleb Azumah Nelson with Open Water. “A refreshingly poetic ode to Black love, Caleb Azumah Nelson's debut novel, Open Water, follows the relationship of two young British artists who meet by happenstance, or perhaps fate, and traces their intricate journey as they navigate what it means to find the right person at the wrong time.”

This week’s Critical Race Theory recommendation is “Know Your Worth: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities”

“The deliberate devaluation of Blacks and their communities has had very real, far-reaching, and negative economic and social effects. An enduring white supremacist myth claims brutal conditions in Black communities are mainly the result of Black people’s collective choices and moral failings. “That’s just how they are” or “there’s really no excuse”: we’ve all heard those not so subtle digs.
But there is nothing wrong with Black people that ending racism can’t solve.”

This book is important because it explicitly speaks to the social structure of racism and how blame itself is a white supremacist idea specific to the devaluation of Black people.

28/02/2022

Invisible disabilities, also known as Hidden Disabilities or Non-visible Disabilities (NVD), are disabilities that are not immediately apparent, are typically chronic illnesses and conditions that significantly impair normal activities of daily living. For instance, some people with visual or auditory disabilities who do not wear glasses or hearing aids, or who use discreet hearing aids, may not be obviously disabled.

in Rock, Paper, Scissors, a main character has Prosopagnosia aka Face Blindness and navigates the world in a way that some of us could not imagine doing comfortably.

As you think about advocacy and vulnerable communities, remember that hidden/invisible disabilities exist and just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

We should strive to build a world, through advocacy and activism, where even if a disability isn’t disclosed, people feel well taken care of.

In Race Against Time by , he states that an order for America to move in the right direction they must first atone for the legacy of racism and slavery that still persists today.

Black Americans die an average of 4 years earlier than white Americans. Black Americans earn 65 cents for every dollar earned by white Americans. Good housing, better education, fair wages, safe work places, drinkable water, healthier food, all could be improved with reparations.

When you look at the successful institutions of American, JP Morgan for example, all can contribute their success to the owning of slaves, or harm to Black Americans, somewhere in their history.

What are your thoughts? In what ways can we close these gaps between Black and white Americans?

We love Black History and we especially love it in February!

Since we quoted Nikole Hannah-Jones yesterday, it seems just about right to recommend her book, The 1619 Project.

This book made people mad because it asks us to rethink the myth surrounding the founding of America. That can be scary, but it is absolutely necessary if we are every going to become a better country that truly seeks equality and justice.

Have you picked this one up yet?

Join us in our weekly advocacy action!

A group of Congressional Democrats have announced a plan to push an ambitious set of cannabis reform proposals this spring. “The federal proposals seek to establish 21st-century banking services for the nearly $18 billion industry and purge the criminal records of thousands of ma*****na offenders.”
In a memo to the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) wrote:
The growing bipartisan momentum for cannabis reform shows that Congress is primed for progress in 2022, and we are closer than ever to bringing our cannabis policies and laws in line with the American people.

The Ma*****na Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act would seek to remove cannabis from the Controlled Substance Act and purge records for those convicted of using ma*****na.
