Recently, in various places I’ve seen some confusion when using CLA Policy Report to find out if you can camp on a certain parcel. I decided to address this with a quick and to the point video. Once you know where to look you’ve got a definitive answer on if you can camp there.

Ontario Crown Land - How do I know if I'm allowed to camp here?

We had a great opportunity this weekend to explore the abandoned Burwash Industrial Farm (also referred to as the Burwash Correctional Centre), a provincial jail that housed anywhere from 180 to 820 inmates during its history. The prison opened in 1914 and closed in 1975, after it was deemed to be too costly to run despite it being a self-sufficient institution.

Keep in mind that even though the former townsite is CROWN LAND, the prison is located on PRIVATE property and permission must be obtained before planing your visit.

Sad news for fans of Great Lakes maritime history. At the end is September the SS Norisle will be towed from her current berth at the Assiginack Museum Complex on Manitoulin Island to Port Colborne to be scraped.

The ship is 215ft in length. Norisle was built at the Collingwood shipyards in 1946—the first steamship built in Canada after the end of World War II. She sailed until the year 1974, when she and her sister ship, Norgoma, were replaced by the much larger and more modern MS Chi-Cheemaun which could accommodate a much larger number of automobiles, and passengers.

That’s a wrap! Thanks once again to the entire team and volunteers for inviting me to do a clinic at the 2nd annual The Gathering @ Albion Hill Conservation Area. Had a blast, got too much sun, met some new people and said hi to some familiar faces. Thank you to everyone that attend the clinics and stopped by the campsite for a chat. See you all in 2024🍻

Be mindful of dry conditions if your heading out this weekend.

The forest hazard is high to extreme for much of . Forested areas are extremely dry and multiple fires are occurring daily. Make sure your campfire is completely out before leaving.

Follow Ontario's outdoor burning regulations: https://www.ontario.ca/page/outdoor-fire-rules-and-permits

This morning I was at a local conservation managed forest, I frequent this property year round and am constantly removing trash. I know a fair number of locals will know this spot and the consistent problem with illegal dumping & teenage drinking (I know the latter very well 😂) We all hate seeing it, do the right thing and remove what you can, don’t try and burn it. This fire spread to the nearby leaf litter and burned roughly 0.8ha of surrounding undergrowth including at least 3 different turkey nests that I had previously found. Luckily the majority of the brush and forest was pretty wet and smouldered the fire until crews arrived to put it out.

However! This isn’t actually a total loss, fires are a natural regenerative process. The undergrowth will grow back 10-fold next year and will be a lush free feeding ground for all kinds of small critters and pollinators.

Whelp, I guess summer is over. Back to the cool wet stuff with a chance of snow. But, as always a few hours of backroad driving, public land turkey scouting is never a bad time!

With the longer days, warmer temperature’s and snow receding across much of the province it is an important reminder that our season doesn’t start until MAY 1st. During this time please avoid using trails, hydro cuts, forest access roads and seasonal roads.

Why are the trails considered closed until May 1st? Well, the period between late fall and early spring is commonly known as the "spring thaw," when the ground is wet and soft due to melting snow and rain. During this time, off-road trails are particularly vulnerable to damage from heavy vehicles, such as all-terrain vehicles, 4x4 vehicles and dirt bikes, which can cause soil erosion and disrupt delicate plant and animal habitats. To protect the environment and ensure the safety of trail users, many off-road trails in Ontario are closed before May 1st. It is important to respect these closures to help preserve the natural environment and promote responsible outdoor recreation.

I can’t believe I’ve had my Gazelle T4 HUB Tent for 6 Years! If your interested in what i REALLY think about the tent check out this video. I took some time to sit down and discuss how it’s held up, a few modifications I’ve made to the tent, what I like, what I don’t necessarily like and what I think could be better about the Gazelle T4 hub tent.

I’m sure by now many of you have noticed a slight change to the YouTube channel and social pages. At this time I’d like to formally introduce you to the new name/logo, The Backroad Adventurer.

The primary focus will still be 4wd vehicle adventure travel, but I will be throwing more activities I enjoy as well such as hiking, kayaking, fishing and exploring the general history of the areas we love to explore. As well as the normal adventures your used to seeing, I’m planning a few review videos on the gear I’m using and, of course I am also going to continue bringing you more in-depth crown land & public land educational videos. I am personally excited for the change and am looking forward to sharing more content with you all. So make sure to keep an eye on the YouTube channel as some of the new content will be dropping VERY shortly.

Windy, snowy and all around great adventure this weekend. We base camped at before heading to at the Regal Point Elk Farm for a delicious pancake breakfast! Taking our chances with the weather we headed up the Bruce Peninsula to the national park. Hitting up the park and the grotto in the off season is in my opinion, the BEST time to do it!
