Roxanna Panufnik’s choral work ‘Lancing Beatitudes’ was commissioned to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Lancing College and received its World Premiere on May 25, with the Lancing College Choir conducted by Alex Mason.

Roderick Williams’ ‘From Ignatius Sancho,’ commissioned for countertenor Reginald Mobley and the Academy of Ancient Music was also premiered on Saturday, at the West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, conducted by Laurence Cummings. A pivotal artist of the late 20th century, György Ligeti was born 100 years ago today, on 28 May, 1923. His music transformed radically over the course of his life as he incorporated the influences of folkloric rhythms, modes and melodies from around his native Transylvania, Western Europe's post-tonal avant-garde, layers of rhythmic complexity from Central Africa, and the vernacular, conceptual, and process-driven musics of North America.

The musical style most closely associated with the name Ligeti, however, is his "micropolyphony," the transformation of a vast number of independent musical lines into dense, swirling planes of sound—swarming clusters often reaching to the highest and lowest ranges of the orchestra.

This year, musicians and presenters are celebrating the Ligeti centennial with performances around the world, including works from the Edition Peters catalogue.

At London's Royal Albert Hall 11 August, Edward Gardner will conduct Ligeti's best known work, the gripping Requiem, alongside his micropolyphonic motet Lux aeterna—and Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra—in a BBC Proms concert inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film that cemented these pieces in the popular imagination as signifiers of the sublime.

Lux aeterna will receive a number of other performances in London, including renditions by The Carice Singers at the Cheltenham Music Festival on 9 July and at St Martin-in-the-Fields on 22 September, and by Voces8 with the Voces8 Scholars at Kings Place on 14 October.

In Mexico City, as part of a four-part, eight-concert tribute to the Hungarian composer, Ensamble Cepromusic will perform the Cello Concerto with soloist Diego Gutiérrez on 9 &10 June. The London Sinfonietta will also perform the dense, raw concerto on their 14 October tribute to the composer at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Happy Birthday to Gabriel Fauré. Roy Howat, editor of our acclaimed Fauré editions writes:

"Here’s a post to celebrate Gabriel Fauré’s 178th birthday (today), along with the now-complete critical edition of all his songs from Peters Edition. Volume 4, completing the project, contains his last four song cycles, from his last two decades, music that sounds younger every time I come back to it. Every bar of his music leaps a step beyond the expected, and it was thrilling to witness a group of over 40 students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland take to these wonderful songs from between 1905 and 1921. The project completed itself with a semi-informal concert in the RCS Ledger Recital Room on 3 May, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyq4V7duzCE
I'm still trying (in vain) to upload the programme order, but essentially it's most of the songs of La Chanson d’Eve (1905–10) and Le Jardin clos (1914), plus all of the Mirages (1919) and L’Horizon chimérique (1921). Starting with the extraordinary quasi-cantata 'Paradis' that launches La Chanson d’Eve, the cycles are interspersed with some other items, including some earlier Fauré plus songs by Debussy and Chausson and piano duets by Bizet. Some of the song performances are probably premières in the high-voice key options that the Peters Edition has made available for the first time to sopranos and tenors. Bear in mind that this was a student in-house event, but I’m thrilled at the passion with which these marvellous students, many of them new to this repertoire, took to it. They were great, and I’ll never forget this."
