One man’s trash is another man’s palette 🎨

Fun to sketch some Kodiak watercolors with a palette that made me out of marine debris and a mint tin.

Have you ever had any questions about making watercolors in the wild? Or making a difference with a sketch?

I am doing a Q&A next week and want to help you track down the answers. Please help me out by dropping a question in the comments, or if you have the answers help out someone else with a reply.

Did you finish the 24 day advent series last year?

Right now the 24 day watercolor series coloring book is 100% free on the trailbound sketches website. A perfect pairing with the trail tiles. Or you can take the full course and paint along every step of the way.

Can you spot the little vole below the snow?

I have always been told that “real” artists paint big. And I used to think that I had to paint big to have lots of details, but this is just a 3x3 Trail Tile and I love how these little sketches feel. 🦊

The only photos I have of my sketches from Banff.

Why is it easier to make a sketch if it’s for someone else? I have a habit of giving away sketches to the people who inspired them, so these are just the handful of photos I took. I made 18 watercolor during the event, but most of them are heading home with someone else.

This all started as secret. I was too embarrassed to post my watercolors to my instagram. I was worried about what people might say and my paintings felt a bit too close to my heart. so I started a separate account and called it

Instead of the judgment and criticism I was afraid of from those watercolor posts, I found a community of amazing supportive sketchers. It’s inspired me to paint it forward and since then I have followed those watercolors around the world trying to tell stories that share the big picture (literally) through adventure and creativity.

This year the plan is to share more through weekly videos on YouTube and our newsletter. We started a whole new “Trailbound sketches” account on YouTube and if you wanted to be one of the first to subscribe, it would mean the world!

Some love the canyons, some love the snow or the mountain tops, or the forest or the rivers… There’s no way to represent the whole United States with one landscape.

But in the same way, there’s no way to truly represent the whole country without every single one of these amazing outdoor places that we call home.

What place are you thinking about when you cast your ballot?

WEEKEND REMINDER: Don’t forget your sketchbook (or Trail Tiles) 🎨

I don’t always come home with a masterpiece (or sometimes anything at all) but I am always glad I brought my art supplies when I do find a moment to make a quick sketch on an adventure.

Thanks to everyone who got one of these new trail tiles this week. Your support means the world and I can hardly believe how many need to be shipped out already! Beyond excited to see what you all make!

When words fail me, I turned to watercolor. Sometimes a topic is too big for words, and growing up with dyslexia I’ve always had a hard time sharing what I feel through words. I’ve never felt that more than on my first Ocean Plastics recovery trip where I was exposed to some of the most wild places on earth covered in trash from around the world. I felt super overwhelmed and unable to share anything even even though it felt really important and pressing to say something. But I couldn’t seem to find the right words.

That all changed when I begin to paint and try to make pictures about this overwhelming subject. I started by making paintings for myself, just a little sketches to try to wrap my head around the scale of the problem. But when I shared those little sketches, other people were able to see what I was seeing and feel the same things. This made me feel not quite so alone and sketch by sketch, painting by painting I began to create a story that I could share.

I write this because I want to tell the artist out there something. When you feel overwhelmed, or like the world is crashing down around you. You’re not alone and even if you’re not an engineer or a scientist, and you just have a paintbrush or a pen your voice matters now more than ever. Even if it’s just a little sketch.

There are still millions of solutions to be discovered for this complex problem, but sometimes that conversation starts out with a little sketch.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg… well in this case, it’s the egg, because I wanted to see if you can guess which bird it belongs to before you swipe.

The birds are back in Alaska to nest and I’m reminded of their incredible journey they make for to lay these precious little eggs in this wild place.

There’s tons of great places to learn more about this amazing migration including but what is your favorite place to get bird info?

A hard lesson I learned about green:

There is no easy way to do green. I have always been searching for the perfect shade of green that I can uses for anything. My “Go to Green” but I never could quite get it right. Part of that is probably because the human eye can see more shades of green than any other color. But also because it’s just a complex mix.

I have tried sap green, and olive green and hookers green but the green I love the most is when my paint accidentally mixes with another color. When they just meet naturally on the page. That way is not predictable and it’s messy, but for me the shade they begins to make is as natural as it gets, so that’s what I am trying to do more of. I try to loosen up, let things get a bit messy and go for green!

What’s your favorite shade of green?

Paintings from a summer trip to the Adirondacks where it was like a rainbow of green.

What do you think of these little hidden sketches?

For the past 34 days I have been hiding a little watercolor for someone else to find. I post a little clue or story on instagram and the first one to find the sketch gets to keep it. Most of them get snapped up within an hour (I check back to make sure I don’t littler).

Anything I should add or do differently for the next 34 days?

Have you ever tried painting a landscape in seven parts?

These are the paintings I’m hiding this week in Seward Alaska. It’s a landscape from on my favorite beaches, but what’s different about this panorama is that it’s broken up into seven different pieces. At first I thought landscapes were best done at once to give this really big broad perspective , but lately I’m really enjoying breaking everything into little pieces. You still get this effect of a really big scene but each piece takes on its own character, which makes the combined painting of all of them really special. It’s also a lot less intimidating than starting one really big piece.

Give it a try, or try to find one of the prices if you are in Seward!
