South Asia Monitor A perspective on the region https://southasiamonitor.org/ South Asia is the region where one-fourth of the world’s population lives.

It is a melting pot of multiple ethnic, cultural and linguistic groupings with a long history of dynamic human interactions, territorial realignments, social and religious movements, cultural assimilations and ingrained economic exchanges. Though the region has been viewed, explained and explored through various perspectives, there has been a longstanding need to create a comprehensive resource base on and for South Asia - not just for the eight countries that constitute it, but, more importantly, for the rest of the world which is increasingly drawn into its triumphs and travails. Until recently, there has not been a single comprehensive source that global policymakers can turn to for highly informed perspectives on South Asia. South Asia Monitor is a window to the region, the one-platform resouce of information, knowledge and debate on security, conflict management, diplomacy, culture and economy, among others, concerning the eight countries that comprise the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). South Asia Monitor is maintained and curated by SPS (www.spsindia.in)

A common BIMSTEC policy statement on digital sovereignty would give the region a clearer collective voice and a stronger negotiating footing with foreign companies. Additionally, BIMSTEC can be used to initiate a shift from U.S. cloud storage companies to regional alternatives such as TATA Communications (India) and NIPA Cloud (Thailand).

Critical minerals are not literally the new oil, but they may play a comparable role in defining the balance of power. The race has already begun, and India’s preparedness will determine whether it merely secures access to the resources of the new century or helps shape the industrial order that emerges from them.

The man who once led Pakistan to its only World Cup triumph has now become the subject of an international cricketing appeal for humane treatment. The more the authorities try to keep his story behind prison walls, the more the cricketing world appears determined to take it beyond them.

India is carving out a vital role in the global back-end chip infrastructure. Washington actively views India's rise in this sector as a strategic hedge, codifying tech cooperation through bilateral frameworks designed to shift critical supply lines away from East Asia.

For decades, Europe generally followed Washington when American and European strategic interests broadly coincided. Iran exposes what happens when they do not. Europe still needs the United States for security—but increasingly wants to retain the right to say: “We share your objective, but we do not necessarily accept your method.”
