The DIY SHAKESPEARE Initiative is a York Region Based effort by independent artists to adapt the works of William Shakespeare for an international audience. What began with the PELL-MELL PLAYERS' all-volunteer production of Richard III at Fairy Lake Park in Newmarket ON, evolved into the production of ANNE'S CURSE, a short-film based on the play. In summer 2014, PELL-MELL PLAYERS will be hosting t

he DIY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL in Newmarket, where Theatre practitioners, both amateur and professional are invited to celebrate Shakespeare with open-air performances in a Renaissance Fair environment. True to our "do-it-yourself" ethos, one of the visiting productions will be selected by the audience for a short film adaptation, similar to ANNE'S CURSE. Because the words of William Shakespeare belong to everybody, we believe that these stories are a unique opportunity to empower audiences and artists worldwide in the spirit of community and collaboration.
