So, for the purpose of transparency I will share this with you. When people submit to publications, the poems are read and the ones that fit best are chosen for publication for the said book. Those poets who are chosen receive a complimentary copy of the book. Now, for those of you who may be wondering, how do you fund these projects? I invest in myself and my projects. I have have a handful of individuals and organizations invest in projects also. For the most part, other than authors who fund their own projects, I take on the cost to produce the projects that I put out call for submissions for. I DO NOT USE AMAZON for printing or distribution, or anything else. I handle that myself and there is a reason for that, too long to explain here but I will share at a later date. So for example, The Voices of Real compilation books, I put out a call for submissions, receive poems, choose the ones that fit best, notify the poets, and start the publication process: editing, design, page layout, and other important publishing responsibilities-ordering supplies, keeping items in stock like cover stock, paper, ink/toner, glue pellets for the perfect binder, foil, laminate, labels, envelopes, purchasing ISBN's, barcodes, and so on. So now, the book is complete. TIME (which is so overlooked and underappreciated) has been put into producing the book and a number of copies have been printed, some to go to contributing poets and others for people who said they would like to purchase a copy. Whenever you deal with money, it can get funny. Say the book is $15 plus $5 for shipping so that $20. There are 22 authors in the book. Take the $15 (the price of the book) and divide it between 22 (authors) that's 0.681818181818181818 cents. So, where does the money go when people purchase the compilation book? It goes right back into purchasing supplies to produce more books. And it is not like I'm selling thousands of books, (which would be needed to pay the authors a respectable royalty.) I am not financially benefiting from author's work. And remember as the publisher, I am taking on the cost of shipping, envelopes and postage as well. So much goes into this, I thought I would break it down a bit for those who may be wondering. The goal for me was never about money. It was an is about providing a platform, outside of what is already available and accepted, for people to be able to express themselves. It is the mission, and the vision, and the purpose. It is the freedom to not be bound by a certain way of thinking, a thinking of what is acceptable and who is worthy of acceptance. Following a set of rules not meant for you to succeed, but barely exist, creatively. Trying to match a system's expectations when they don't even consider what you say or feel or experience is good enough to be shared if you don't have special letters attached to your name or connected to a certain group of people. I have been honored to be able to publish poets who understand this. I have published poets who are doctors, teachers, social workers, business men and women, poet laureates and others who have those special letters attached to their name. But they carry themselves with respect and treat others with respect and dignity and purpose because they know it is not about the accolades or the degrees or the letters attached to ones name but the right for someone to say: I have a name, I have a voice, and it is worthy of being heard and listened to. As a publisher, I have been afforded the pleasure and honor of being invited to the lives of each poet that sends their work to me whether it is published in one of my projects or not. You have allowed me to hone my talents and what I have learned to create the books I publish. And if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. It's very simple, if people don't submit, there are no books. If people are not inspired, they don't write. And for those out there, individuals, organizations, and systems who feel like not everyone should be writing or not everyone deserves to have their work in a book, I have news for you, we are here whether you want us to be or not. And not only will you hear us, but you will listen to us.
