"It's my life mission to save lives, reduce stigma, and we must address the school-to-prison pipeline by focusing on trauma early on so children and families can become resilient and healthy," says Alliance Healthcare Services CEO Laurie Powell.

"Statistics show that more people are incarcerated with mental illness than any other setting and that's not ok. Alliance Healthcare Services is one of the largest jail diversion agencies in the country serving around 400 people a month through CIT Police and the Shelby County Sheriff department."

This is the first in our new series on senior food insecurity. It’s a topic that is especially important in the greater Memphis area, which has the third highest senior food insecurity rates in the country. There are a lot of challenges associated with senior food insecurity, but local organizations like MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association) are taking a proactive approach to providing solutions.

Excited to share this beautiful photo essay from contributor Reginald Johnson on this Juneteenth holiday. He writes:

"On Saturday, June 10, 2023, Playback Memphis hosted its annual Juneteenth Memphis Matters performance and celebration. The night’s atmosphere was filled with lots of tears, joy, laughter, and dancing. The opening ceremony started with libations, music, and the calling of the ancestral names of family members from the audience and cast members.

It paid homage to and celebrated the lives of the many Black people enslaved in America. As each name echoed throughout the theater, there was a sense of liberation and the feeling that we all share in the same kindred spirit."

Christian Brothers University will be celebrating Valentine’s Day a little differently than most this year, as the Memphis university is expected to break ground on a $4.2 million, approximately 4,700 sq. ft. expansion of St. Benilde Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The expansion ushers in a new packaging program for the school, and includes plans for a certified thermal laboratory, which could make CBU the first university in the world to host such a laboratory.
