Here is a "Did You Know" From our Debra.

LONG HAIR
Traditionally, long hair was always a symbol of masculinity. All of history's great warriors had long hair, from the Greeks (who wrote odes to their heroes' hair) to the Nordic, from the American Indians (famous for their long shiny hair) to the Japanese. And the longer and beautiful the hair was, the more manly the warrior was considered.

Vikings flaunted their braids and samurai wore their long hair as a symbol of their honor (they cut their braid when they lose honor).
When a warrior was captured, his mane was cut to humiliate him, to take away his beauty. That custom resumed in what is today military service. There when new soldiers begin their training the first thing they do is cut their hair to undermine their self-esteem, make them submissive and make them see who's boss.

The Romans were the ones who "invented" short hair so to speak, between the 1st and 5th centuries AD.. In battles they believed this gave them defensive advantages, since their opponents couldn't grab them by the hair. This also helped them to recognize each other in the battlefield.

Short hair on men is a relatively new "invention" that has nothing to do with aesthetics
But today we often see men being humiliated, sometimes called "gay" for wearing long hair, not knowing that short hair is actually the "anti-masculine" and is a repressive social imposition, while long hair symbolizes freedom.

Another Did you know, from Debra.

THE HATFIELD FARM: The lumber used for building the William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield home came from a sawmill situated on Cow Creek, just north of Sarah Ann, WV. The hardwood was hauled by work mules along a nearly impassable stretch of mountainous roadway (before railways were available in this section of Logan County).

This large home represented the Hatfield’s second homeplace, erected by the family after they moved from their original log cabin and property along the Tug River. Devil Anse sold their original log home and wooded estate — and straightway purchased over 5,000 acres of prime woodlands along Island Creek District. For safety’s sake — essentially to avoid Kentucky bounty hunters, lawmen, and private detectives — the clan moved deeper into rural Logan County.

Mountain State Historian Randy Marcum, a friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud page, added that this large house “burned down in the early 1930s."

Here is another
*Did You Kmow*
From Debra who finds the strange and unusual.

Have you seen me in your yard? I'm a Stenopelmatus. Please... DON'T kill me!

I would like to tell you a little about myself. Many people also know me as a potato bug, Jerusalem cricket, Skull Insect, Childface, or Mother of Scorpion.

People get scared when they see me and want to kill me. The reality is that I'm running from you.

I'm not a spider nor scorpion nor cricket, and I HAVE NO POISON. My only weapon is my mandibles. With them, I feed off the organic waste that is found next to garden plants.

We have a very important role in the environment, because we help plant growth, thanks to removing the earth and thus allowing soil oxygenation.

My life span is a year.

If you find me at night, don't kill me. I'm just looking for food and a safe place to hide. Please... DON'T kill me!

This was posted by the group called
I love Native Americans.

A Scarce Cabinet Photo of Ellie Irving, “Sioux Princess”, and Her Son. Ellie Irving was the wife of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West cowboy and Lakota translator Bronco Bill Irving. Ellie and her son, Bennie, were favorites of the cast and crew of the Wild West. This portrait was probably taken in New York in 1886 or early 1887 as the show was preparing to embark for England.

**Did You Know**
New Year of our history in the southern part of America .
From Debra

Why do Southerners eat Black Eyed Peas on New Year’s Day?
The story of the Southern tradition of eating black-eyed peas as the first meal on New Year's Day is generally believed to date back to the winter of 1864 - 1865.

When Union General William T. Sherman led his invading troops on their destructive march through Georgia, the fields of black-eyed peas were largely left untouched because they were deemed fit only for animals.

The Union foragers took everything, plundered the land, and left what they could not take, burning or in shambles.
But two things did remain, the lowly peas and good Ol’ Southern salted pork.

As a result, the humble yet nourishing black-eyed peas saved surviving Southerners - mainly women, children, elderly and the disabled veterans of the Confederate army - from mass starvation and were thereafter regarded as a symbol of good luck.

The peas are said to represent good fortune. Certainly the starving Southern families and soldiers were fortunate to have those meager supplies.
According to the tradition and folklore, the peas are served with several other dishes that symbolically represent good fortune, health, wealth, and prosperity in the coming year.
Some folks still traditionally cook the black-eyed peas with a silver dime in the pot as a symbol of good fortune.

Greens represent wealth and paper money. Any greens will do, but in the South the most popular are collards, mustard greens, turnip greens, and cabbage.

Cornbread - a regular staple among Southerners in the absence of wheat - symbolizes gold and is very good for soaking up the juice from the greens on the plate.
You should always have some cornbread on hand in your kitchen anyway. Good for dinner and in the morning with syrup.

Pork symbolizes bountiful prosperity, and then progressing into the year ahead. Ham and hog jowls are typical with the New Year meal, though sometimes bacon will be used, too. Pigs root forward, so it’s the symbolic moving forward for the New Year.
Tomatoes are often eaten with this meal as well. They represent health and wealth.

So reflect on those stories when you sit down at your family table and enjoy this humble, uniquely Southern meal every New Year’s Day. Be thankful for what this year did give you in spite of the bad, and hope and pray for better days that are coming ahead for you.

This was what your Southern Kinfolk did and reflected upon every year.

We wanted to share these traditions with our friends not from the South.

Have a Happy & Safe New Year

Another *Did You Know* from Debra

A great woman erased from history by idiots.

The branding of the syrup was a tribute to this woman’s gifts and talents.

Now future generations will not even know this beautiful woman existed. What a shame. The world knew her as “Aunt Jemima”, but her given name was Nancy Green and she was a true American success story.

She was born a slave in 1834 Montgomery County, KY. and became a wealthy superstar in the advertising world, as its first living trademark. Green was 56 years old when she was selected as spokesperson for a new ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour and made her debut in 1893 at a fair and exposition in Chicago.

She demonstrated the pancake mix served thousands of pancakes, and became an immediate star. She was a good storyteller, her personality was warm and appealing, and her showmanship was exceptional. Her exhibition booth drew so many people that special security personnel were assigned to keep the crowds moving.

Nancy Green was signed to a lifetime contract, traveled on promotional tours all over the country, and was extremely well paid. Her financial freedom and stature as a national spokesperson enabled her to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for all Americans.

She maintained her job until she died in 1923, at age 89. This was a remarkable woman, and sadly she has been ERASED by politics.

I wanted you to know and remind you in this cancel culture period.

Hello everyone. Here is another "Did you know" from Debra.

Did you know that the chopping down of the Christmas tree represents the death of Christ and putting it back up again represents the resurrection of Christ.

Did you know that the wreaths we hang are never ending circles, that represents eternity?
Candy canes were made to look like shepherd hooks and the colors red , Jesus' blood, white, purity.

The gifts, represents the 3 gifts the wise men brought for Jesus.

So when you are running around trying to get the "perfect gift", stop yourself take a deep breath and remember we have been given the perfect gift, Jesus Christ was given to us to remove all of our sins...

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!

Fascinating Facts that you probably didn't know.

"Crowfoot stood and watched as the white man spread many one dollar bills on the ground.
“This is what the white man trades with; this is his buffalo robe. Just as you trade skins, we trade with these pieces of paper.”
When the white chief had laid all his money on the ground and shown how much he would give if the Indians would sign a treaty, Crowfoot took a handful of clay, made a ball out of it and put it on the fire.
It did not crack.
Then he said to the white man, Now put your money on the fire and see if it will last as long as the clay.
The white man said, No….my money will burn because it is made of paper.
With an amused gleam in his eyes the old chief said, Oh, your money is not as good as our land, is it?
The wind will blow it away; the fire will burn it; water will rot it. But nothing will destroy our land.
You don’t make a very good trade.
Then with a smile, Crowfoot picked up a handful of sand from the river bank, handed it to the white man and said, You count the grains of sand in that while I count the money you give for the land.
The white man said, I would not live long enough to count this, but you can count the money in a few minutes.
Very well, said the wise Crowfoot, our land is more valuable than your money. It will last forever.
It will not perish as long as the sun shines and the water flows, and through all the years it will give life to men and animals, and therefore we cannot sell the land.
It was put there by the Great Spirit and we cannot sell it because it does not really belong to us.
You can count your money and burn it with a nod of a buffalo’s head, but only the Great Spirit can count the grains of sand and the blades of grass on these plains.
As a present we will give you anything you can take with you, but we cannot give you the land.”

Hello everyone. Check this out. From Debra. I hope you guys find all my off the wall postings interesting. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

I was thinking of those little Christmas corsages that were so popular when I was young. You could find them at the five and ten cent store. They were plastic. Boxed sets of handkerchiefs were in almost all stores for Kleenex weren’t invented or if they were frugal people would never spent money on something you use once and throw away! (Sears catalog were used for a lot of looking and cutout dolls before it went to the outhouse!! )Ha ha I think all women loved handkerchiefs! I know my mama did for sure. Women never went anywhere with out a handkerchief in their purse or apron pocket. Men kept theirs in their back pocket. Old Spice and Evening in Paris was under most Christmas trees along with bath salts, powder and toilet water, usually in pretty containers. Parakeets, gold fish and turtles were sold at the five and ten cent store. Awwww the beautiful memories. If we could only visit back in time and see our grandparents for that Christmas hug. Just on Christmas. It would be so nice.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Hello folks! Steve here.

If you will, please tell me what your favorite
Beatles songs are, and what it is that turns you on
with the song/songs!

Also, if you want, you can let my little buddy...
(not Gilligan), Seymour know what your favorite
song or songs from the Beatle era is/are. Those do
not have to be a Beatle song. I know Seymour loves
all kinds of music! You ought to see him when he
hears songs that turn him on...he jumps up and
down on his boxes and sings along with the
song....ok...he ATTEMPTS to sing....and then he
falls off off his boxes and his Beanie go
flying....anyway, give me a shout, cool???

Peace/Love/Respect,
Steve

This is from Debra Bayou Vista, Louisiana. I hope you guys find all my off the wall postings interesting. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

From The Storyteller:

The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries, and a drink. He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut in half, placing one half in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them.

As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking, ‘That poor old couple-all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.’

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine-they were used to sharing everything. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.

Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said,

"No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything."

Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked,

"What is it you are waiting for?"
She answered, "My turn for the teeth"
