On any given night, tens of thousands of fishermen in China's distant-water squid fleet perform an industrial ballet thousands of miles out on the high seas. With unprecedented access to the extremely remote fishing grounds, SQUID FLEET is a poetic exploration of the motivations of the fishermen, the brutality of systemic labor abuses in the Chinese fishing industry, and the destruction wrought by the commodification of people and nature in our globalized world. It is based on two years of rigorous investigative journalism from the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of The Outlaw Ocean Project.

One of the newest members of the National Geographic Documentary Films family, THE TERRITORY has taken home TWO Sundance Film Festival awards for World Cinema Documentary: Audience Award and the Special Jury Award for Documentary Craft

In THE TERRITORY “the moving image is truth, truth is power, and picking up a camera is an act of reclamation. Set at the explosive intersection of technology, politics, and indigenous persecution, the film is gorgeously and sometimes ingeniously conceived, painting an intimate first-hand portrait of joy, pain, and community, before bursting with rip-roaring intensity as it captures a high-stakes struggle for survival unfolding in the moment.”

2x awards at Sundance!!

"The Sundance awards are very significant because historically our existence has been erased and marginalized, but now we're changing it. Our film is not only about the Amazon, it is also made by the Amazon. This is very important for our work, for our struggle and for the protection of the forest." - Bitate Uru-eu-wau-wau

We are so honored to be working with National Geographic to bring this story to the world in a big way! We could not ask for a better partner to help further the conversation and raise awareness around Indigenous people's fight to protect the Amazon rainforest.

Thank you, IndieWire!!

"Set at the explosive intersection of technology, politics, and indigenous persecution, the film is gorgeously and sometimes ingeniously conceived, painting an intimate first-hand portrait of joy, pain, and community, before bursting with rip-roaring intensity as it captures a high-stakes struggle for survival unfolding in the moment. More than just a chronicle of events, however, it’s also a bold statement about the lens through which indigenous peoples are often brought to the silver screen."

Sundance: Alex Pritz’s real-time documentary lets the Uru-eu-wau-wau tribe tell its own story.

We are thrilled to officially announce that Documist's first feature The Territory has been selected for a World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Competition in January 2022! We are so, SO excited.

This project has been an incredible team effort, and we are beyond grateful to everyone who has been part of it over the last 3+ years. Most importantly, thank you to all the people who let us into their lives, and to those who risked so much to help capture this story. As much as the film itself, we are proud of being a part of this journey of co-creation.

This is a moment of celebration, but also reflection and re-dedication. Our deepest hope is that this film can be more than just a statement about the world as it is, but can provide a useful tool in advancing urgent conversations and action on climate justice and Indigenous territorial rights around the world.
