Vulpiano Records Sampler EP: Vol. 17 is out now for Netlabel Day:

Featuring Brevyn, Kaelin Bougneit, Richey Hackett, Nicolas Tourney, and more.

Vulpiano Records is proud to present a sprawling chronicle of the transcendent compositions released through the label during 2022, including Netlabel Day, by our generous and talented collaborators for a singular listening experience.

There is a continuous sonic motif of the sublime, and the possible impressions within contain multitudes: time and place, knowing, chaos, Gaia, the vastness of space, death, life, suffering, nirvana…In the long traditions of drone and ambient music, it is a canvas for the listener and an acoustic salve that opens channels new and subtly re-wires our senses.

Breathing out while listening, you sense the artists vaporizing and reshaping the rubble of the last few years - gifting us precious moments to do the same.

The label will likely be on hiatus for the rest of 2023 while we regroup and ascertain where to go from here.

Lately Kind of Yeah - Uncurse

Part of the Lately Kind of Yeah archive series.

The LKOY archive series returns on Vulpiano Records for the first time since 2019 with ‘Uncurse,’ an album of acoustic tracks. Lo-fi production and sparse instrumentation set the stage for an enveloping, warm coziness replete with psychedelic washes of soft noise. The pretty vocals, sometimes layered and chanting as in the casting of a spell — or the undoing of one — weave with grace and vulnerability through these gauzy landscapes.

Words from the artist:

"Uncurse is an acoustic song collection, recorded between 2011–2017 in Illinois, Kentucky, and Wyoming. For an empty room, the addicted, and hollowed wood."

Lhas Fawn - Laho

Finnish artist Lhas Fawn returns, with a densely
cacophonous drone poem to decay, destruction, and
terrible transition, with its track titles: seedling, trunk,
grove, rotten wood, and finally "Kaski" - a site that has
been cleared by slash-and-burn for cultivation.
Finland contains some of the most ancient wilderness
in Europe and is a rare and sacred preserve amongst
the most forested regions.

With instrumental, abstract compositions, emotion can
be a scrying game. Amidst our deep universal crisis, it
is not hard to read despair into such pealing walls of
sound: lolloping percussion, crashing synths fusing
with shattering cymbals, disoriented swirls of Kevin
Shields-esque manipulated guitar…These may evoke
the ‘seedling’ of the civilizational noise in all its
contradictions; echoes from small beginnings in a
harmonica-like sound to the gathering urbanization
with a cathedral-like organ. Chaos seems increasingly
to reign as the ‘tree’ grows and proliferates.

However, there is a purity to the natural end of a cycle,
and the dissonance eventually gives way to harmonic
strumming as the wood rots and signal decay
advances. The finale may be a bleak purging, a
mournful plea for new beginnings in the digital
wreckage, or simply the life of a forest suspended.

Brevyn - Waterwalk - Extended (VULP-0213)

Brevyn graces the keys again with the same elegant imagination we have seen across numerous releases. More than ever, there is a neoclassical feel to the New Age underpinnings: the sound of a romantic soloist operating an elaborate, Atlantean cathedral organ made of hundreds of winding coral pipes. A suite many shades of blue, traversed by ripples and shafts of light, forms patterns and reflective mirages that are entirely open to divination by the listener—luxuriously submerged in emotion.

Our latest sampler EP is out now:

With this sampler, we present artists who have made Vulpiano across the span of 2021 and into early 2022. We find both continuity and renewal of the recurring themes solidified at our core over 12 years.

There are long-time pillars of the label: Richey Hackett’s tremendous growth branching into emotionally vital electronic compositions; the ever-versatile, 90s alternative-saturated introspections of King Elizabeth (furiously prolific since 2020 after a long absence since the early years of Vulpiano); the lush and transcendent playfulness of Brevyn’s synth work, with influences that distill how online music defies generational stereotyping.

And as ever newer artists arrived, like tributaries at the conflux of a river: a celestially noisy instrumental from Torre di Fine abstracts from the vast post-rock sound of his first Vulpiano release; immortal ebt returns triumphant with a new, crushingly hypnagogic sound after an 8-year absence; Lhas Fawn stirs a psychedelic whirlpool of aleatory ritual; Fabio Keiner’s meditative, microtonal opus adds to Vulpiano’s canon of masterful drone records; and Wood Ship’s subtly dissonant gaze at a winter horizon soothes, but begs contemplation.

King Elizabeth - 'Dog Fight'

Instrumental layers and anxious vocals accumulate; as guitars and metronomic synths drive, sirens blaring, through the exasperation of a rabid and myopic psycho-social landscape.

Wood Ship - Hunters (VULP-0210)

Laurie Akerman's first appearance with Vulpiano is a deep and broad journey through manipulated recordings that transits through many phases and sonic environments: a Tarkovsky-esque space of peeling paint and trickling water, haunted church ruins, light falling upon a book on a desk, and the amplified expansions of prosaic actions (a phone call, washing dishes) that somehow tease out the quantum threads sprawling outward and therein.

Words from the artist: Wood Ship is a project by Laurie Akerman from the former English post-rock band This Sea Reflects Stars. Creating ambient drone pieces with field recordings and Contact and Electromagnetic microphones, these releases are usually conceptual and have their own ideas and themes behind them.

Hunters was recorded last year and hints at the notion of historical Royal Lodges and their trappings.

Fabio Keiner - shiva-rudra (VULP-0209)

Fabio Keiner makes his debut on Vulpiano with a masterful droning-ambient work - quintessentially meditative, even ominous in its awesome scope. In the tradition of classic ambient it enchants, electrifies and transports the listener into different states of consciousness (if they are willing to give themselves over).

Words from the artist: 'shiva-rudra' - a longform ambient dronescape improvisation in honor of lord shiva, ecstatic creator and destroyer god of the hindu pantheon - was inspired to a great extent by the works and theoretical approach of italian vanguard composer and musician Giacinto Scelsi. I owe a lot to Scelsi's music and understanding of sound; so 'shiva-rudra' shall be a modest tribute to his works.

'shiva-rudra' is a soundscape to be listened to as entire experience without interruption: eyes closed, ears open

King Elizabeth - 'Servant to Myself'

A song built on contradictions, sonically chasing itself with a structure that layers as it gains its momentum of revelation. King Elizabeth takes a train ride out of the city, seeing the brick façades turn to stone slate as the clouds swell and break over the Peak District.

Our latest sampler EP is out now:

Welcome back for another filing in this discreetly dark era of Vulpiano, where organically recurring overtones have surfaced amongst the artists foraging herein. As per usual, we present diverse music with an experimental heart. We move through many melancholic, slow-burning hinterlands of sound collage, possessed phonographs, and transmission wave existentialism. But before that, there are hazy impressions of a never-summer, aqua-nostalgia, and acid-nocturnal driving music that scales an ambient bridge to settle outside a shimmering 2-step trance club. A revolving stable of artists with their distinct approaches once again enriches the whole.

Lhas Fawn - 'Numb Terra'

Lhas Fawn is a new artist to Vulpiano, bringing an intoxicatingly vast palette of tone and noise to a musical dialect recurring throughout the label's history. There is a sophisticated progression to these drones, pulling in synths and rock instrumentation, with each track trailblazing an utterly distinct character.

When listening, one feels the deep reflectiveness of living in a depopulated area on a cacophonous globe. Whether with hints of Fawn's home range of Finland or the neo-noir frontiers of the Western US, we see boreal forests and semi-arid plateaus stretch out before us, with nothing but twinkling lights on the distant horizon and a universe of sound emanating psychotropically from a device in our pocket.

As the leaves settle on the wreckage of another year, an older and wiser Vulpiano can be glimpsed between
the trees with another offering: highlights from the musical ether that the label perennially inhabits.

Human voices are sparse, and the overall mood is introspective, languid, and often seemingly exiled out
of time. Technique, form, and medium are all on equal footing. Treasured mainstay artists who have joined us from across the globe all get a look in: the delicate micro-dance of ish10 yow1r0, the adept New Age heart of Brevyn, the darkly vapored bedroom synth of King Elizabeth, and more.

This music is free.

Brevyn - Seahorses

Electronic composer Brevyn's latest platter for Vulpiano and landwalkers everywhere is a compilation of older recordings, themed around aquatic tone colors and ambiently-oriented rhythms.

An established connoisseur of library music and videogame soundtracks, Brevyn fully explores this ethos as applied to the strikingly exotic and delicate environs that hum beneath the waves: short motifs (pale crabs clustering around a hydrothermal vent, seahorses weaving through coral forests) that are beguiling in their own way, but are generously reproducible and can be imagined as BGM in a video installation, its walls a wide projection of bioluminescent jellyfish.

Words from the artist:

Seahorses is a dive into the strange, alluring yet often creepy ways of marine life. Being my second archive release, these are songs I made back in late July (2, 4, 6-10, 11, 13) and December (1, 3, 5, 12, 14) of 2016. #11 is download-only. Given that I previewed many of these songs over the past months it's become a compilation of sorts.

My inspiration was a mix of Spencer Nilsen's Ecco The Dolphin music, ocean-themed library music like Eric Vann's Water World and quirky old space-age/lounge. A particular riff actually reoccurs in about three tracks, somewhat like a library record or soundtrack. I was obsessed enough with this idea of 'aqua lounge' to make a companion mix of these influences for Vulpiano: www.mixcloud.com/camp_fr/vulpiano-records-12th-may-2021/

Richey Hackett - The Nightmarist

Following his eclectic opus A Space For Your Dreams (released earlier this year on Vulpiano), Richey Hackett continues on his parallel path as an electronic composer with The Nightmarist. Richey takes ideas and delves into them, skillfully weaving atmospheres throughout his kaleidoscopic chords: bitcrushed echoes, fizzing electrical signals, distorted percussion, and ambiguous vocal samples.
