Breaking News: The US military has confirmed that for the first time ever, a real fight in the sky between a person flying a jet and a jet flown by a computer has happened in California.

The US military reports that an artificial intelligence (AI)-controlled jet fought against one flown by a person in a training exercise. They flew really fast, up to 1,200 miles per hour, during this battle, which people often call a dogfight.

In this test, the computer-controlled jet used old flight data to make decisions in the moment, a process we call “machine learning.” The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) says this AI had already shown it could do this in practice runs on computers, and back in 2020, it had won against human pilots in those practice tests.

During the actual flight, pilots were in a special X-62A plane just in case, but they didn’t have to step in. DARPA called this test a really important event in the history of flying.

Frank Kendall, the Air Force Secretary, said that the X-62A doing well last year was a huge step forward in fighting wars with planes. Colonel James Valpiani pointed out that this shows how reliable computer learning can be in dangerous situations like air fights and could be used for other complicated things. He also mentioned that the X-62A helps with research and training new leaders in how to test and come up with new ideas.

The much-awaited Bitcoin halving event has just taken place, a significant event in the history of cryptocurrency.

Because of the halving, the reward for Bitcoin miners has been cut in half, from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block. This reduction slows down the speed at which new Bitcoins are created and released into circulation.

Now, experts and fans are watching the market closely to see how this change might affect Bitcoin’s price.

Did you know that the U.S. ranks 29th for work-life balance among advanced countries? 😯

California is at the forefront, proposing a bill to empower workers by granting them the right to disregard after-hours calls, texts, or emails, including those from their superiors.

This progressive legislation underscores the significance of undisturbed time away from work for family, hobbies, travel, or simply unwinding! It extends the responsibility of businesses to ensure the mental and emotional well-being of their employees.

Similar ‘disconnection’ rights are already established in Spain and France, and countries like Portugal, Belgium, and Kenya are considering similar legislation. Australia has its version known as the ‘Right to Disconnect.’

Major tech companies are quickly depleting their data reservoirs for training AI models.

Companies like OpenAI have nearly exhausted the internet’s valuable resources. Concerns have been raised that key data sources such as Wikipedia and scientific literature could be depleted within two years, according to The Wall Street Journal.

To combat this shortage, tech giants are resorting to unconventional methods to obtain fresh data, some of which may skirt legal boundaries, as noted by The New York Times.

OpenAI is rumored to have developed a tool for transcribing audio from YouTube videos, potentially breaching copyright laws. Surprisingly, Google, YouTube’s parent company, has not objected, possibly because it also covertly transcribes YouTube content to fuel its AI models.

With the scarcity of online content, Meta reportedly contemplated acquiring publisher Simon & Schuster to access the data within their books.

Furthermore, companies are exploring the creation of “synthetic” data, generated by AI to train AI models. Essentially, AI is generating its own data for self-learning purposes.

Amazon’s comeback is in full swing.

With a staggering 26% increase year-to-date, the stock reached an all-time high today, a milestone untouched since July 2021.

This turnaround marks a remarkable journey for Amazon, rebounding strongly over the past 16 months from a low of $84 in December 2022. Since that trough, the shares have surged by 125%, boasting a remarkable 90% gain over the last year.

Founder Jeff Bezos, still the largest individual shareholder, is undoubtedly pleased. Today’s 2% surge added $3.3 billion to his wealth. Since last April, the resurgence of shares has further enriched him by $90 billion.

Notably, this new peak coincides with CEO Andy Jassy’s annual shareholder letter release.

Jassy, echoing many tech CEOs, emphasized Amazon’s advancements in AI and expressed enthusiasm for its integration within the company. He also underscored Amazon’s cost-saving efforts and the efficacy of its new regional warehouse approach, enhancing delivery speed.

Former Apple design guru Jony Ive and OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman are teaming up on a groundbreaking project: an AI-powered personal device.

Reportedly, they’re on the hunt for up to $1 billion in funding from heavyweights like Thrive Capital and Emerson Collective to fuel their startup. Yet, the startup’s name remains shrouded in mystery.

Altman, notable for his backing of the Humane AI initiative, may be spearheading a similar venture alongside Ive. Unlike a conventional phone, their envisioned device aims to revolutionize AI interaction.

Ive’s exit from Apple in 2019 followed by this collaboration with Altman could potentially position them as rivals to their former employer.

St. Louis’ tallest office building, the 44-story former AT&T Tower, now empty, was recently purchased for a surprisingly low $3.5 million.

This sale price is a mere fraction of its previous $205 million selling price in 2006, highlighting the dramatic decline in downtown St. Louis’ commercial real estate values, despite its proximity to the Railway Exchange.

After standing vacant for years, the building has finally changed hands.

Truong My Lan, a prominent real estate mogul, has been handed a death sentence in Ho Chi Minh City for orchestrating Vietnam’s largest financial scam.

As the 67-year-old head of Van Thinh Phat, she committed fraud that cost Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank over $12.5 billion, leading to substantial financial damage.

Although this was Lan’s first legal violation and she had previously engaged in philanthropic work, the court highlighted the grave nature of her actions, underlining that the stolen funds were irretrievable.

Additionally, Lan’s niece, Truong Hue Van, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for her role in assisting her aunt. This case has shocked the public and intensified scrutiny on corruption within Vietnam’s banking and corporate sectors, negatively affecting the nation’s economic future and appeal to investors.

The gap in home ownership between single women and men has narrowed from 2000, when women owned 64% of homes compared to men’s 36%.

Even though single women often earn less than men, they still own 2.71 million more homes than their male counterparts, a difference that has grown slightly since 2021.

Dr. Daniel Kenigsberg bought a property in Connecticut at 51 Sky Top Terrace. He was taken aback recently when he discovered from a friend that construction had begun on his half-acre plot.

Shocked, Dr. Kenigsberg was certain he hadn’t sold the land and suspected foul play. He decided to look into the matter himself.

Records showed the land was supposedly sold for $350,000 to 51 Sky Top Partners LLC in October 2022, a sale Dr. Kenigsberg was unaware of and denied any involvement in.

To address this, Dr. Kenigsberg sued the local developer and a Trumbull-based lawyer and their firm, claiming they fraudulently sold his land. The lawsuit, filed in July 2023, aimed to reverse the sale and sought $2 million in damages.

Dr. Kenigsberg also demanded the removal of all construction from his land, wanting it returned to its original state.

Food delivery workers in NYC now earn a minimum of $19.56 per hour plus tips, thanks to a city rule that also adjusts their pay for inflation each year.

Before the rule was enforced last December, these workers made about $5.39 per hour. Now, over 60,000 workers across the five boroughs are seeing an extra $850 million in their yearly earnings.

Despite delivery apps initially resisting this change, city data shows that this new pay rate hasn’t affected customers or restaurants, and delivery numbers on major platforms like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub remain unchanged.

04/04/2024

A recent survey by Bankrate found that 44% of people in the U.S. don’t have enough saved to pay for a sudden $1,000 expense. This highlights how many American families are living on shaky financial ground.

The main reasons many people can’t afford surprise bills include rising prices eating into their savings, not getting big enough pay raises, and having a lot of debt, especially from credit cards.

To deal with this problem, money experts suggest setting aside enough money to cover three to six months of important bills, making saving automatic, cutting back on spending that’s not necessary, and focusing on creating a safety net of savings to help weather financial surprises.

A new study shows that in the 50 largest cities in America, it’s now cheaper to rent a home than to buy one. This is because the interest rates for home loans are high and home prices are going up.

For the first time since this data started being collected in 2021, renting is less expensive than buying in every big city across the U.S. The difference between the cost of renting and buying is especially large in places like Austin, Texas. In February, it was 142% cheaper to rent than to buy in Austin, and this is partly because there are more rental homes available.

South Korea is grappling with a critical demographic challenge, as its birthrate has dropped to the world’s lowest at 0.78 in 2022. This raises worries about an aging population and diminishing workforce.

To tackle this, some companies in South Korea, including the Booyoung Group construction firm, are encouraging childbirth by offering significant cash bonuses to their employees, with up to $75,000 awarded for each new baby.

However, despite these incentives and government efforts like affordable housing and reduced costs for post-birth care, experts argue that real solutions require a shift in the work culture that currently favors men, and enhanced support for working mothers.

Donald Trump’s wealth has soared to $6.5 billion, making him one of the top 500 wealthiest individuals globally, as reported by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The significant boost in his wealth primarily comes from the merger of his social media venture, Trump Media & Technology Group, with Digital World Acquisition Corp., placing the value of Trump’s 58% share at $3.9 billion.

Additionally, a New York state appeals court decision to lower the bond Trump needs to pay in a fraud case from over $500 million to $175 million has offered him financial breathing space.
