Storyboard to screen! Tim and Ryan did a little improv for this bit on day 1 and I think that really set a tone for the shoot for everyone to pitch in their ideas and have fun. They both really owned these characters and as I’m editing this project I appreciate them even more.

DP appreciation post! I’ve been singing this guys praises since he came and helped out with some pick up shots a few months back, but seriously, this man is a monster! He goes well above and beyond what’s expected of him, brings his A game and chill temperament, and has a point of view that adds to the overall creativity of the piece. All I can say is thank you Zo!

Back with another storyboard side by side! One of my favorite things about filmmaking is seeing these images I’ve had in my head, then drawn on paper, come to life! The logistics of a location can change things, for instance in this case instead of tracking directly in front of the character we had to turn a corner, but that is another piece that makes it so cool. I’m so thankful to work with a team that can create such indelible images! Please keep in mind that this image isn’t properly color corrected. I just got excited and wanted to share!

What we asked this crew to do is absolutely crazy! We shot almost 30 pages in 4 days and it came together beautifully! There’s no way it would have been as fun or as smooth without these folks and their hard work and upbeat attitudes. Without great costumes and hair and makeup, the cast wouldn’t look as great as they do. Without production design and props, the world wouldn’t be built out like it was the camera wouldn’t have beautiful spaces to frame. Without sound we wouldn’t have the dialogue crisp and clean. And without camera and lighting we couldn’t have captured it so artfully. Thank you all so much for making the words and drawings I’ve been working on come to life! ❤️

This cast is incredible! Honestly I knew after casting that we had a great group but after this first weekend it’s clear we really do have something special. An all around great couple of days of shooting. Everyone from production design to wardrobe to hair and makeup to the camera department to our amazing producer to these gifted actors brought IT. Can’t wait to start cutting some of the footage together!

Sometimes it’s annoying that you have to consider copyright issues but sometimes it can be an opportunity to do some world building. Sure I’d love to use the scene where one of our characters used to work in the film business to show off my favorite movies by plastering their posters on the walls, but when me and some designer friends decided to make some fake movie posters for it, we were able to have a little fun with it and it sort of creates this other universe where my story takes place. My brother and I love doing this all the time with website and app names (we’ve done Facespace, an Uber-like app called whyp and on more than one occasion used GregsList). By doing a similar thing with these move posters we have some Easter eggs that are kind of funny and add to the overall texture and richness of the production.

Little red carpet action last night for the premier of “Seth’s Big Break Two,” a short I did some title design for. As a filmmaker that has always scrapped to create my own films I know how difficult it is to make ANY movie let alone one that’s actually good. So my hat’s off to the sister/brother duo of Luke and Rita who made a fun, funny and all out wacky gore fest of a film for next to nothing and a lot of will power. Shoutout to the head of the for hooking me up with them and the producer Kevin Maxwell for facilitating everything. Congrats to all involved in SBB2!

Starring Liam and Logan Mattingly
Written and scored by Liam Mattingly
Cinematography, editing and sound design and mixing by Ian Mattingly

This was a fun little project that the boys wanted to make for Halloween. We didn’t get it done before the holiday but they love seeing themselves on screen even if it was more work than they anticipated. They did a great job and Liam was a big part of making this happen. I’m a director and not a camera opp, DP, sound designer or editor snd I have nothing but admiration and respect for those jobs so I know this isn’t perfect on my part but in the end it was just a fun dad/sons project that we can always look back on and laugh.

I’m a visual person. I always have been. It’s pretty much impossible for me to do something better with text or a list when it can be done with images. For a recent project I was tasked with being the DP and although I made a shot list I also made some storyboards. Here are a few of them. I almost always draw what I see in my head. It really helps me and the people I work with fully understand my vision.

Still from a short I’m doing with my 2 sons. We started it as a Halloween project so it’s in the horror genre. My oldest, Liam (seen here) “wrote” it, acted (along with our 4 year old), came up with the title and wrote and played the score for it. We’re behind schedule but I hope to share it soon. Simple little scene but a lot of fun to do with the boys.

Took in “See How They Run” in Pasadena today. Fun flick with a show stealing turn by Saoirse Ronan. Would recommend for a date night or outing. Not cheap and the fish and chips my wife got we’re just 3 rubbery fish sticks but the vibe is really cool. Maybe just have a drink and popcorn?

The Mattingly Boys! With our little buddy Angus. It’s a rare and special privilege to be able to “work” with your dad, brother and son, and I hope to never take it for granted. Sharing last night together was amazing. There really aren’t words but I’m just so damn proud of what we’ve done together..
