Why we are trying to revolutionize how and what kids learn!

This is Scott (Tommy’s dad). I wanted to introduce us and share the story of why we started a children’s podcast covering difficult and complex subjects. Tommy, who is 7.5 years old, hosts the podcast. He has been homeschooled by his mom for his entire academic career. His mom has done a fantastic job teaching him the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic that all kids learn in school. She has done a great job of both utilizing modern technology and traditional lessons. The combination of online and book work seems to have created a nice equilibrium keeping his young mind engaged and always encouraging him to strive for advancement. In traditional metrics he is on average 2 grade levels ahead for his age group. Recognizing his ambition to learn, I wondered what role I could play in his education. Being somewhat of an aspiring autodidact myself I contemplated how I could teach him about subjects that aren’t traditionally for kids. I wanted to introduce him to physics, economics and psychology and to help him understand the lessons that history has taught us. My first inclination was to write a book focusing on these subjects and offering various lessons correlated to each one. The idea for a book called “Lessons” was born but was short lived. Who knows maybe someday I will write it after all but I thought we needed something more interactive and that could be presented in a shorter more digestible format. Being an avid podcast listener myself I began to think doing a podcast together may be exactly the format we were looking for. My mind was made up when I did some research and realized I could not find a children’s podcast dedicated to education that was hosted by a child. The idea that was “Lessons” had now morphed into the What I Learned Today podcast. Tommy was intrigued, excited and apprehensive at first. Admittedly, the first episode did not get recorded without some coaxing from mom and I. However, one episode and some great feedback from friends and family was all it took to have him convinced. He loves spending time with me reviewing what we write for each episode and then before we record practicing with his mom. He absorbs and retains the information from each episode extremely well. Besides the informational education component the podcast has challenged him to take risks, overcome failure and be disciplined in preparation. In the intro to his podcast he says, “Everyday I try to go to sleep a little bit smarter than when I woke up.” If this is the only “Lesson” he ever learns from me I will be proud of the job I have done. I hope you will join us in our journey to try to make as many kids (and adults)as possible, a little bit smarter.
