Northerly

Northerly Family life from a Wisconsin perspective. Northerly is all about carving out time for the magic moments of family life.
(4)

We want to draw inspiration from each other, share ideas and perspectives and adventures big and small, and celebrate all the different ways we approach raising kids in Wisconsin. The Northerly site, livenortherly.com, is run by Nikki and Katie, sisters who grew up with roots in both southern and northern Wisconsin. We want to inspire families to live Northerly — happy, healthy, fulfilled and true to themselves.

I’ve been putting off writing this message, but it’s time to share the news: Northerly is closing.

For the past five years, it has been a joy, privilege and honor to share stories — nearly three hundred stories! — that celebrate family life in Wisconsin. Real families, true life, honest perspectives, fun adventures, local businesses and so much more that I hope offered some ideas, inspiration and sense of connection.

To everyone who read our stories, thank you! To anyone who liked, commented or shared one of our posts on social media, I so appreciate it. To all of you who shared your stories with us, I could not be more grateful. And to our amazing roster of contributors — writers, columnists, photographers and collaborators — we could not have done this without you, nor would we ever have wanted to.

I’m not exactly sure what will come next, but I’m feeling pulled in new directions and I have learned that I need to listen to these calls. However ... if Northerly ever comes back, you will be the first to know!

I hope this holiday season is a wonderful one for you and your family. I hope the new year ahead is filled with fun, goodness and so much love, and I hope you live each day out in the ways that feel right and true for you.

Thank you for sharing in this adventure!

With love and gratitude,
Katie

Wisconsin has a beautiful, unexpected lesson to teach us …

Quietly Amazing November 1, 2022 Years ago, when I lived on the West Coast, something strange kept happening. No matter who I spoke to, or where the conversation occurred, very few people seemed to know anything about Wisconsin — and what some had heard was often way off base. At first, I tried to...

Snuggle up with your kiddos and dig into these five children’s books, all hand-picked by Margaret Leonard of Dotters Books.

Five Books Full of Goodness November 1, 2022 This is my favorite time of year. Something about leaves changing, sweaters and a pair of socks, and a nice mug of hot chocolate makes it feel necessary to snuggle up with a good book. Goodness and gratitude come easily in times like these, so I hold t...

“On the threshold of another transformation, nature reminds us yet again how change prevails as the only constant,” writes Malory Ogrizovich in a beautiful essay about this moment as summer gives way to autumn.

A Moment of Harmony September 1, 2022 Dazzled by the sun, it feels as though our eyes have barely begun to adjust to the brilliance of summer, as the light shifts to make way for the next season. On the threshold of another transformation, nature reminds us yet again how change prevails as the on...

Two days in beautiful Bayfield isn’t enough — but it’s a great start!

Bayfield Beckons August 1, 2022 Perched at the very top of Wisconsin, Bayfield holds a special place in many travelers’ hearts. Known as Wisconsin’s smallest city — with a year-round population of fewer than five hundred — as well as the gateway to the Apostle Islands — the chain of twent....

Let’s get silly! Margaret Leonard of Dotters Books recommends five children’s stories “sure to put a smile on your face.”

Five Books that Get Silly! August 1, 2022 I don’t know what it is about summer … but the combination of sunshine, warm nights spent eating dinner together on the porch and popsicles dripping down faces makes it a bit easier to remember the joy and silliness of being a kid. In that spirit, her...

Summer’s the perfect time to do some floating. Lee Alliet offers four great approaches for you and your fam!

Float On July 1, 2022 When I think of summer, it’s all about water for me. I have always been drawn to the water — pools, lakes, rivers, big water — and sometimes it feels almost like my gills are drying out if I have been away too long. One of my favorite ways to be in the water, explore the ...

“If we let it, summer will remind us that we are here to flourish, for it is only in our flourishing that we can truly nourish and replenish those around us,” writes Malory Ogrizovich in a beautiful essay about the power of this new season.

Stand in the Sun June 1, 2022 Follow the light long enough, and you will find summer. Life is in full bloom, and as magical and beautiful as it all is, the surges of growth and change that unfold this time of year can stir up an undercurrent of overwhelm and angst as we try to keep up with “all th...
