Vincent Anthony is a music writer, budding podcaster, founder of THE 97, and life-long Lamb. He is currently completing a Masters in Journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. This May, he launches his first podcast, “DEDICATED” in connection with our “The Elusive Chanteuse” zine. In addition to penning over 150 articles on THE 97, he has written for various New York-based publications. His favorite Mariah album is “Butterfly,” but “The Elusive Chanteuse” is in his Top 5.

“You Don’t Know What to Do” is an upbeat number in one of my favorite Mariah modes, which is disco-lite. It’s bursting with her trademark witticisms and comebacks and makes me smile.

“The song’s dramatic piano opening follows quite the lineage—Donna Summers’s “On the Radio,” Paul Jabara’s “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)” as performed by Summers and Barbra Streisand, Jocelyn Brown’s “Somebody Else’s Guy,” and even Mariah’s own “You’re So Cold” (perhaps unintentionally, because real Lambs know our chanteuse has since publicly disowned the Emotions-era tune).” –Natalie

Alona Turner is a life-long lamb who recently completed her Juris Doctor in conjunction with her degrees in entertainment business, music production, sociology and women’s studies. Alona splits her time between working in the legal profession and completing academic research on the history and impact marginalized groups have had in music across all areas.

Her love for Mariah Carey’s artistry, philanthropy, and business savvy have been a great inspiration to Alona both personally and professionally. Their favourite albums include Daydream, Charmbracelet, and E=MC2 and their fav song is the unreleased gem “There Goes My Heart”.

Rose Brown, affectionately known as Mother Rose, is a distinguished music journalist, cultural critic, and musicologist, renowned for her deep understanding and insightful commentary on the music industry. As the host of the engaging Twitter Spaces series “ ,” she has explored the careers of musical legends like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and a host of celebrated divas including Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, and Mariah Carey and countless others.

Rose’s passion for music is enriched by her academic prowess, having earned a degree in media criticism and a NYU certificate in Music Business, which bolsters her credibility and depth of knowledge.

Throughout her career, Rose has had the privilege of interviewing and speaking with numerous musicians, including Mariah Carey herself, and has shared her expertise on international radio broadcasts, particularly focusing on Black pop culture and music. The best thing about “Dedicated” is Mariah’s homage to her hip-hop roots. It’s an underrated aspect of her musical journey and influence and it’s a beautiful celebration of the genre.

“I have always lived in a world where “the real ones” knew that Mariah Carey was and is a very important figure in the history of hip-hop. She made it acceptable for female pop stars to get involved in the genre, even tangentially, which made her contribution incredibly unique. As a lifelong fan of both Mariah and music overall, her sampling of early rap intrigued me enough to inspire me to pursue a music production degree so I could learn as much as I could from the technical side.” –Alona

Mariah Carey’s heart is on full display in “Faded,” not only in its lyrical content, but the desperation in her vocals that highlight them adds a much-needed pungency of emotion.The anguished cries in her voice help color the song with her experience of watching the person she loves fade farther away; The truth is in her voice.

“With every listen, the lyrics affected me in deeper ways. The song narrated my relationship with my mother, who would “come and go,” over what became a 13-year absence. I tried to believe “it was possible to bring us back to life.” I tried to gain some sort of understanding or some compassion from her, but inevitably I accepted that she would “always be somewhere, but not there for me.” –Niya

The essay for “Cry,” like the song itself, will start things off a little different from the norm… like the song, it’ll be emotion-filled. Vincent has collected reactions from several Lambs about their first time hearing this heartbreaking album opener. It’s unlike any other in her catalog, it landed like a gut punch, revealing why she kept the album under guard for so long.

“Cry.” sets the tone for the album, in the most emotionally haunting way possible. As a fan, when I first heard this album, I was immediately concerned for Mariah because of how much emotion was poured into the record. From the excellent vocal to the piano to even the song title itself, it’s honest, real, and one of the most transparent songs in her catalog,” says Khalil Byrd.

LAMBILY SPOTLIGHT 📖✨

Dante DiDomenico is on a mission to be iconic, and he wants to help others achieve the same status through his uplifting and comedic driven content. Based in Toronto, Canada, Dante is a university student passionate about pop culture and personal growth to defy the odds through FLAB-ulous viral posts.

When he’s not creating, he’s spinning or shopping for the vinyls, CDs, or cassette tapes of music legends, especially from Mariah Carey. Becoming an instant ‘baby lamb’ after seeing all the memes from “GTFO” (2018) and randomly shuffling to “Prisoner” (1990) after using an iTunes gift card for a free trial of Apple Music, Carey’s music has been on constant repeat from the acclaimed Butterfly (1997), to Memoirs Of an Imperfect Angel (2009), to Caution (2018). He was also thrilled to find someone just as passionate about the holiday season, with an unhealthy 2,377 listens to her album Merry Christmas (1994) to date.
Dante has previously worked with brands such as Bioré and SmartSweets, as well as being featured in outlets such as Glamour, PopSugar, and Billboard. Additionally, Dante is the co-host of the podcast PenPop with his best friend Ary Dominguez, dissecting classic pop song’s lyrics into their own improper interpretation.

He is also the founder of the social media agency STUDIDO54 based on the 1970s hot spot, and is the face behind the viral TikTok series ‘How to Be Iconic 101’ with 2M+ combined views. Recently, he was featured in the Wall Street Journal for his other viral series covering Beyoncé’s 2023 Renaissance World Tour, ‘KNTY4News’.

20 years ago today, @JanetJackson released #DamitaJo, her eighth studio album.
