Of this song, the band says:
Little kids have the coolest rubber boots. And they know it, and they love them so much. And we love that. This song is inspired by them.
We wondered what it would be like if we were a 60s girl band, performing on one of those shows like Shindig or Ed Sullivan. What surreal stage set-up would they build for us? Probably giant little rubber boots.. We’d have to wear our fanciest sequinned two-man-one-piece-suit, and bring our band of hand-headed people, and our boot-faced backup singers, just to rise to the occasion.
We’ll never know for sure, but through cross-dimensional meditation techniques, we’ve gleaned these images from potential future past events, and recreated them to the best of our abilities.

In honor of Juneteenth, here is the song “Nat Turner” from the album, Songs of Slavery and Emancipation, released on Jalopy Records in 2022.
It is performed here (as on the album) by Kathy Bullock and the Songs Slavery and Emancipation Ensemble at the album and book’s release event at the @peoplesforumnyc
This song commemorates the revolt of enslaved people in Virginia in 1831, lead by the great Nat Turner and says to the slaveholding elite that they will be defeated as surely as the world turns:
“You can’t keep the world from moverin’ ‘round
Nor Nat Turner from gaining ground”
Listen to this song and more from the double album, and learn more about the project at link in @jalopy_records bio
The album was released in conjunction with a book by the same name, published by the University Press of Mississippi. A documentary film was made by @hakanai_df and is available on youtube.

Today we are celebrating The Hank Williams Centennial! 100 years of Hank, born on this day in 1923 in the rural community of Mount Olive, Alabama. His birth certificate reads “near Garland, Butler County”.
“His mother gave him a guitar when he was eight years old, but his musical influence came from a local blues street singer, Rufus ‘Tee Tot’ Payne. From Tee Tot, Hank learned how to play the guitar and sing the blues, which became the basis for his songwriting. His mother moved the family to Montgomery, AL, in 1937, where she opened a boarding house. Here Hank formed a band called the Drifting Cowboys and landed a regular spot on a local radio station, WSFA, in 1941.” - @hankwilliamsmuse
Here’s a clip of Hank Williams performing ‘Cold, Cold Heart’ right here in New York - his very last televised appearance. On April 23rd, 1952, Roy Acuff hosted a Grand Ole Opry special on the ‘Kate Smith Evening Hour’ on NBC and invited Hank and his band to perform on the show.
Hank’s music is very near and dear to us here at Jalopy and we hope you’ll be celebrating with us❤️
Roscoe Holcomb, born on this day in 1912 in Daisy, Kentucky. What better way to celebrate than with this film by John Cohen.

Celebrating the one and only Woody Guthrie, born on this day in 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma.
There is so much to say about this legend and pillar of music and storytelling but I’ll leave the clip to do the talking. Woody Guthrie, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee playing ‘John Henry’ in 1947. One of the two pieces of film of Woody Guthrie that we know about. Maybe I’ll post the other one later today because it’s just so good…
Be sure to keep up with @woodyguthriecenter as they house his archive of work - consisting of more than 100 notebooks, correspondence, and many other documents that show his mission to speak for the disenfranchised.
“One day we’ll all find out that all of our songs was just little notes in a great big song!”
Happy Birthday, Woody Guthrie!
The one and only @mavisstaples ❤️
Born on this day in 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Here’s a clip from The Staple Singers doing ‘Sit Down Servant’ in 1963
We love you Mavis! Happy Birthday!
Have always been so mesmerized by this piece of film from 1956, so naturally we are revisiting it for Big Bill Broonzy’s birthday🎞️
Born on this day in Lake Dick, Arkansas, in 1893.
