There was a time when it wasn't considered appropriate for women to enter into the world of cinema
. Any profession related to film-making was looked down upon and people working in films were not treated with respect. While even men had to bare this attitude, for women, it was even more difficult. The conservative Indian society, thought it was inappropriate for women to act, sing or dance in front of other people. Slowly and eventually, this thought changed when people realised that 'art', more than anything else, deserved more respect that what was already given. Eventually, women started to enter films. And later on, women from, what we call as 'respectable families', also started entering films. And today, we have an industry, where women and men are at par. While we see the greats like Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Prithviraj Kapoor, we also have legendary actresses like Madhubala, Sulochana and Meena Kumari. While we have Kishore Kumar and Hemant Kumar, we also have Lata Mangeshkar, Shamshad Begum, Asho Bhonsle and Suraiya. While we have great directors like Ritwik Ghatak and Satyajit Ray, today, we also have good directors like Meera Nair, Deepa Mehta and Zoya Akhtar. We have great women choreographers like Sitara Devi, Saroj Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant. While we have had legandary music composers like Jaddan Bai and Saraswati Devi in the past, we have Sneha Khalwalkar today, who brings a breath of fresh air in music today.
