There is a consensus in the EASTS editorial board that we are nurturing a scholarly ecosystem for those who want to devote themselves to science, technology and society studies in Asia. EASTS is not only about East Asia. “East” can be understood as a centering of focus on Asia in contrast to Western mainstream STS. This broader perspective defines EASTS. As the EiC of EASTS, my role involves coordinating editorial efforts to assist authors in publishing their work. The most rewarding aspect of this position is communicating with reviewers and editors to provide constructive feedback for authors, helping them in improving their manuscripts.

Given that STS is a cross-disciplinary field, we receive submissions spanning across a wide range of topics, including engineering, medicine, energy, and artificial intelligence. It is challenging to find reviewers for interdisciplinary work. However, EASTS serves as a platform where different works pool together, cultivating an excellent community of scholars. As the EiC, I have had the privilege of working with many excellent scholars and engaging in fruitful discussions with them."

We appreciated your attendance at the EASTS International Editorial Meeting and EASTS X Tapuya Night during the EASST-4S Conference held last week in Amsterdam! This year, we discussed publishing data on open access and book reviews, the use of AI, and upcoming events in Taiwan, including summer schools and the 2027 4S meeting. Your contributions led to a lively discussion!

As the study of digital politics continues to grow rapidly, more scholars and students take an interest in the politicisation of the digital sphere and the digitisation of the political field. Dr. John Postill identified four interlinked domains of digital (aka ‘nerd’) politics: digital rights, data activism, social protest, and formal politics and advocated an ethnographic approach to their study. The current boom in the use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) tools raises intriguing questions about their political and policy-making implications. This boom also poses major challenges for ethnographers of digital politics.

In this talk, we'll delve into debates surrounding data activism, automated decision-making, predictive policing, AI as a ‘black box’, and ChatGPT as a ‘bullsh*t genre’ app. Join us for an exploratory, open-ended session and reflect on your AI experiences.

This short seminar will not discuss the practical aspects of doing video research, such as setting up cameras and microphones, working with video-editing software, transcribing verbal talk and embodied conduct, or subtitling videos for presentation. Instead, will dive into the methodological roots of video analysis in ethnomethodology (EM) and conversation analysis (CA), focusing on how recordings have been used in EMCA to study participants' own analysis of each other's conduct, rather than researchers analyzing recordings from an external perspective. 🔍 Additionally, we will discuss examples from three recent research projects: video calls in migrant families and how grandparents make sure that children greet their remote parents; mobile payments in service encounters and how merchants determine how customers intend to pay; how hotel guests change their behaviour when they are not recognised by a facial recognition kiosk in a self-service hotel.

The longstanding contemplation by Science and Technology Studies (STS) on the role of science and technology as systems for recognizing and intervening in the world is evolving. We are moving toward a critical reflection on the interconnectedness of these systems with the fabric of our daily lives.

This reflection transcends the ethical discourse confined to the 'normative duty of care among humans' and expands into a broader, -normative concept of care that upholds the world and sustains all aspects of our collective lives.

In an age marked by overlapping crises— , , , and the unraveling of safety nets—there is an urgent need for the scholarly community to engage in this dialogue.

How should science and technology be , , and to navigate and mitigate the complexities of such multifaceted disasters? We invite global scholars from the STS field and related disciplines to submit papers that probe the intersections of disaster and care.

Academic researchers, public historians, and industry professionals who are interested in the histories of computing in Asia will share their interdisciplinary insights at the next meeting of IFIP’s Working Group 9.7.

Our plan is to meet concurrently with the Human Choice and Computers 16 conference in Phuket, from 8-9 September 2024.

｜𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐒｜
The theme of the workshop is histories of in Asia. We welcome narratives or chronicles of experiences as well as traditional academic formats. We welcome papers with a narrow focus on computing as well as papers that place computing into larger social, political, and policy contexts🖥️. Papers that utilize archival research or quantitative methods are welcomed.

The program committee will consider any paper in line with the theme, but we are particularly interested in topics such as:

The workshop addresses the need for a greater regional perspective in by bringing together scholars of Science and Technology in the Asia Pacific region.

This workshop addresses the need for a greater regional perspective in STS by bringing together scholars of Science and Technology in the Asia Pacific region. Placing the Asia Pacific Region at the center of STS narratives and theoretical concerns, we are looking for submissions that speak to the following themes:

▶ Artificial Intelligence and STS
▶ Climate change and the environment
▶ Digital anthropology
▶ Governance of sciences and technology
▶ Social perception and acceptance towards science and technology
▶ The Future of STS research and education
▶ Transportation, mobility, and technology

Other topically and regionally appropriate submissions will be given consideration as well.

Participants are expected to present a draft paper of 8000 to 12000 words. A selection of these papers will be considered for an edited volume that we seek to produce for an Asian journal.

Dr. Frédéric Keck, known for his research in the history of science, sociology of risk, and environmental anthropology, is a member of the Laboratory of Social Anthropology (Laboratoire d’anthropologie sociale), founded by the Father of Modern Anthropology, Claude Lévi-Strauss. Dr. Keck is co-leader of the research team “Human/animal relations: contemporary issues” (Equipe / Relations hommes/animaux: questions contemporaines).

Introduction: This lecture is organized on the occasion of the course "Gaiapolitics, ecology and war," featuring Professor Frédéric Keck from the CNRS (France), the author of the book "Avian Reservoirs: Virus Hunters and Birdwatchers in Chinese Sentinel Posts" (Chinese Version Coming Soon). Based on his ethnographic work on techniques of preparedness for avian influenza pandemics in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, Professor Keck proposes the concepts of "sentinels" and "sentinel devices," to illustrate how non-human actors participate in the global war against emerging viruses, and also how "virus hunters" take the perspectives of animals, thus investing in contemporary relations between humans, animals and plants a mode of thought that has been studied by anthropologists among hunter-gatherer societies.
