My stock exhaust was getting a bit rusty, so I found a used replacement. How did it turn out?

This is arguably the largest fireworks display in Japan, the Omagari Fireworks Festival in Daisen, Akita. Occurring on the last Saturday every year in August, it is an exciting, 2.5 hour-long national competition, so only the best are shown and judged.
•
There were so many wonderful displays, my videos could not possibly match the wonderful spectacle. The timing, variety of fireworks, and music selection were unforgettable. While I love my local Super Ogase, I might have to concede that these are now the best I have ever seen.

Four years ago, on my first day coming into the city of Obama, I was dragged exhaustedly out to the local festival. As I had attended festivals before, I wasn’t expecting to be surprised with a small city festival, though I was absolutely wrong. The fireworks are amazing every year.
•
This is day 2 of the Obama Wakamatsu Marinepia festival and this display occurs every year on August 1 near Obama beach. This festival is much more lively than the day before, as more street vendors line up along the street side and the fireworks are certainly a huge draw. And what fireworks they are. Large, varied, and close, the thundering sounds rattle the otherwise quiet city.
•
Being privileged to live near such a huge, close display of fireworks is one reason I choose to stay in this beautiful, but small town. If you can come visit Obama next year, come by August 1st to see a slice of summer life in Japan. You can find fun festivals everywhere in Fukui. #fukuifriday #quietjapan #experiencefukui

This is one of the reasons my trips in America were so short the past two summers. This is part one of the Obama Wakasa Marinepia festival, the Night City, or more commonly called the Hokosha Tengoku (“Pedestrian Heaven”) street festival. This takes place every year on July 31. During the small festival, the street is lined with food stalls and several performances take place on the street in front of Obama Station.

My favorite is definitely watching the Yosakoi dance groups. Here is a small snippet of the fun, though it’s hardly surprising for me to say, it’s much better in person. (I’ll talk a bit more about Yosakoi later.) Come check out HokoTen for yourself next year!

Surprisingly, there is a small racetrack in Fukui Prefecture called Takasu Circuit on the edge of Fukui, near Mikuni Town. It features a 1.5km (.95 mi) track that is perfect for compact kei cars, since the track isn’t particularly wide or high speed. My friend Matt told me about the championship race last month on May 6, which saw about a dozen groups attend. Some appeared to be garage shop sponsored teams, some groups of friends, and at least one was from a school, Kanazawa University.
•
With few exceptions, most of the cars on the track were Suzuki 1998-2004 HA12S-model Altos with full roll cages. Everyone seemed to be pushing pretty hard at the track, resulting in one accident early in the session. After minor duct tape repair (it fixes everything!), they were luckily back on.
•
This looked so much fun. I’m definitely getting excited about the idea of putting my cars on track, as well.

Japan’s (now second) longest zip line at Tree Picnic Adventure Ikeda in Ikeda Town, Fukui. While the ride was a short 40 seconds or so, I definitely flew down pretty quickly. According to the staff, riders go down at about 40-60 km/h (25-37 mph). Great fun.
(Sorry for the strange camera angles, it was mounted on my forearm. At the very end we had to use our bodies for “airbraking” which changed the angle again.)

I’m sure many of you have seen the videos of crazy Fire Ramen being served at Menbakaichidai in Kyoto, Japan. (I had more than a few messages telling me about it.) I actually went there two years ago, being introduced to it by my friend Vin. Well, I never posted about it until now for the simple reason that the ramen itself is not as awesome as the spectacle surrounding it. I didn’t even get a pic of the ramen. (Sorry.)
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my ramen there, but it was actually a bit greasy, likely due to the added oil needed to fuel the huge fire. In fact, I couldn’t exactly remember what type of broth it was without looking it up. It is a soy-sauce (shoyu) base with chicken, pork, and fish, topped with a sizable helping of green onion.
Nonetheless, despite my criticism of the ramen, the experience is well-worth the visit. Few other places will let you experience the thrill of a huge fireball in front of you with a mere bib to protect you. (Don’t wear anything nice, it will get burned or stained from the oil.) The owner, forever scowling, is an extremely funny character, probably scaring some patrons who don’t get his sense of humor. Check it out for the fun, not necessarily for the food.
