FINAL STRETCH OF JALA-PUERTO VALLARTA TOLL ROAD UP & RUNNING

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has officially inaugurated the final stretch of the Jala-Puerto Vallarta toll road, marking the completion of the Vía Corta (Short Route) between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta after nearly two decades of construction. The completed toll road reduces driving time between Guadalajara and the coastal resort to just 2.5 hours. However, many travelers may still opt for the libre (free) road, as the tolls cost 1,300 pesos each way. The new 33.2-kilometer section, which connects Bucerías with Puerto Vallarta, features eight bridges up to 300 meters long, 13 vehicular crossings, a toll booth, and a five-kilometer branch road leading to Puerto Vallarta International Airport.

TRIBUTE TO LAKESIDE BENEFACTOR NEILL JAMES CELEBRATES HER LIFE AND PROFOUND IMPACT ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) has finalized the schedule for its first Neill James remembrance program, set for Sunday, January 12, at the LCS campus on Calle 16 de Septiembre, Ajijic. The event will feature an ambitious bilingual program, beginning at 10 a.m. with complimentary chocolate and pan dulce for those in attendance. The Open Circle Ajijic lecture program will follow at 10:30 a.m., recounting the history of Neill James. This will include three testimonial roundtable discussions, with participation from both Mexican and foreign-born lakeside residents. James’ philanthropy and local activism resulted in community development programs that stimulated early childhood education and created employment opportunities for village women. Today, her former estate, Quinta Tzintzuntzan, is home to the Lake Chapala Society and the site where her remains are interred. She passed away there on October 8, 1994, at the age of 99.

COVID VACCINE SEASON BEGINS AMID MANY DOUBTS

The updated Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is now available at various local pharmacies, including Farmacias Guadalajara, Farmacias del Ahorro, Farmacias Benavides, and Farmacias San Pablo, as well as in Walmart pharmacies. However, rising vaccine hesitancy and fatigue, with many perceiving ongoing updates as unnecessary, have fueled skepticism, especially in the United States. This week’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.), a vocal vaccine skeptic, to be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services clouds the issue even further. Kennedy has repeatedly asserted that Covid-19 vaccines were rushed and are potentially harmful, citing underreported side effects such as myocarditis and blood clotting. Nonetheless, he has stated that he does not intend to remove vaccines from public access, emphasizing that he wants Americans to have sufficient information to make informed decisions.

IS A CANELO-JAKE PAUL FIGHT REALLY IN THE CARDS?

Jake Paul, the 27-year-old media-driven boxer/influencer who will take on 58-year-old Mike Tyson in a highly publicized live-streamed (Netflix) showdown on November 15, believes he is good enough to challenge the world’s best fighter: Guadalajara’s own Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. While he may be nearing the end of his career, most boxing analysts agree that Canelo, 31, possesses far too much skill for Paul to pose any threat. With only 11 professional fights, Paul has yet to face a truly elite opponent, and without a legitimate match against a top-tier boxer, his career in the sport remains difficult to take seriously.

DRIVER WHO DRAGGED DOG GOES TO JAIL

A viral video of a middle-aged woman pulling a stray dog tied to her Nissan Kicks SUV in Tlaquepaque sparked outrage and prompted police intervention. The dog was unable to keep up with the speed of the vehicle and appeared visibly exhausted as it was dragged along the ground, with its paws bleeding. According to reports, the woman told pedestrians who confronted her that she tied the dog to the vehicle because it “tried to get into her car” and was dirtying the seats. After arguing with the unrepentant woman, other motorists blocked her vehicle to prevent her from fleeing while the police were called. Even upon the arrival of officers, the woman continued to defend her actions, claiming that the dog was “from the street” and downplaying its suffering. On Thursday of last week, a judge determined Catalina “N” should be kept in preventative detention while investigations into the case continue.

CELEBRATE THE FLAVORS, SOUNDS & STORIES OF GUADALAJARA’S DIVERSE MIGRANT COMMUNITIES

On Sunday, September 22, the Rhizome Center for Migrants invites everyone to its second International Food and Culture Fest, a celebration of the histories, experiences and cultures of people who are “not from here.Held at the historic Arróniz building in downtown Guadalajara (Zaragoza 224), this charity event supports migrants and refugees who pass through, settle in or return to Guadalajara. This year’s festival promises to be a rich, vibrant experience. In addition to the food and culture fair, an art exhibit curated for Migrant Day will explore the last 150 years of migration in Jalisco. Featured in the exhibit is a special photo collection highlighting emerging communities in Guadalajara, such as the Colombian, Indian, Haitian and Japanese populations. Tran Dang, the founder and executive director of the Rhizome Center, highlights the significance of the event in fostering cultural exchange and understanding, and the importance of recognizing the diverse conditions and experiences of different migrant communities. “You learn so much when you sit down and have a meal with someone,” Dang says. “When you bother to listen and hear about their experiences. And you can do that at this event.” This year’s event will showcase 17 food vendors representing diverse cultures, including Syria, Palestine, Jamaica, Peru, Venezuela, Honduras, Vietnam, Taiwan and India. All the vendors come from the local migrant community, and they will share their culinary traditions proudly. SEE MORE AT: https://tinyurl.com/yc57n4pp
