Happpy Valentine's Day everyone!!! Do lots of good deeds today. It is not just a day to get, it is a day to give. ENCOURAGE someone who needs a kind word. ENGAGE with someone who needs to be doing something other than scrolling through their phone for a friend. And find the JOY that I talk about--then ENJOY the day.

January 1st of 2024. The past few years have been difficult for so much of the world. I've been thinking of yet another war in Europe and remembering my father, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Back on January 1st, 1944 that battle was still raging. I am also thinking of another January 1st--this one in 1962 when the US Navy SEALS was born. Sometimes we forget to be grateful to those who protect us. So today I would like to thank all the SEALS who have served and continue to serve as conflicts around the world. It is their 62nd Anniversary. Many of them have died over those years. So many unsung heroes whose lives were lost for us. So thank you to the United States Navy SEALS and everyone at the United States Naval Academy. We salute you!

Thinking of all the books I have read this year makes me feel really happy. Even if I didn't have my radio program Joy on Paper, a program for writers and those who dream of writing, I would have read many of the same books. That's what I do. I read. And find the joy of reading one of the best things in my life. So thinking about some of the books that I hope you don't miss, I would like you to read Douglas Brunt's RUDOLF DIESEL. Why this book? Because I think you will get a kick out of it. You've seen that word a zillion times -- diesel -- but I bet you never thought much about it. But it is a man's name--and a man who shouldn't be forgotten. He changed the world. He wanted it to be for good, because he was a good man. His engine has powered practically everything for over 100 years. But what happened to him? He was mostly forgotten--until one writer became curious. That's what writers do. Great writers can't stop until they find out. Doug Brunt, who was the 4th guest on Joy on Paper, did just that...he started unraveling the mystery of the disappearance of Rudolf Diesel. What he discovered was amazing. You will enjoy this book on many levels. A beautifully and lovingly written story of a genius who will fascinate you. Veteran's Day is a day to remember and to honor those who have sacrificed so much for us. Take some time this weekend to think about the men and women who have served in our military. It was so much fun to talk to Caroline Alexa McBride about the second book in her series, This one is FOUR SEASON'S AT CUTLERS. This is an armchair travel book with twists and turns. Her main character, Charlotte is a publicist who works for a restaurant group. And, since Caroline worked for Serafina Restaurant as a publicist, she knows of what she writes. Had so much fun talking to Kathryn Williams, National Geographic Kids Editor, about WEIRD BUT TRUE 2024. She has what used to be call and "infectious" laugh -- but nowadays don't know if you can say it. But she does--it is a delightful laugh. She's a bubbly as an editor at National Geographic should be. After all, she has a job that is truly a JOY. Just like Joy on Paper is my joy.

I was raised on NatGeo Magazines--when they arrived in our mailbox, it was like getting a piece of sunshine. Especially when it was -15 degrees in Michigan's UP.

This book is technical for kids, but there is a kid in all of us and so it really is for every age. If you don't have a kid in your life, order one directly online and send to a hospital It is also perfect for the senior in your life. It will keep their gray cells busy.

Today's the day I was waiting for--the release of Douglas Brunt's brilliant book about Rudolf Diesel., who disappearance in 1913 was so relevant in today's world.
