There's an exclusive premiere of Choshech's new EP "Blood" on Machine Music blog. It's scheduled for official release next week. This is perhaps the most important piece of music that came out here, or anywhere in the world, since the horrendous events of October 7th. In an absolutely genius way, Shay and his collaborators, Dorin, Vlad, Lev, have expressed musically what we've all been feeling, what's been boiling inside, what occupies our minds each and every day.

I personally still don't have the will to pick up an instrument or sing, but I was immensely proud and honored to do the mixing and mastering for this masterpiece. It was crucial to me that the profound message embedded in the music was conveyed with absolute clarity.

I urge everyone to take the time to experience this EP. It's greater than ourselves.

I told myself I wouldn't start writing about the new compilation (out now!) the minute I released it and would wait like a social-media-savvy person for a better time of day. But I am, alas, not a savvy person.

Needless to say this year's undertaking was heavier than most, and I was pretty sure I'd just let it go. I'm very glad I didn't, and very thankful to all the artists who generously gave their time and music. As always, the money goes to the amazing wildlife shelter למען חיות הבר - אביהוא שרווד.

New, spectacular music on the site. The spectacular music in question this time around is the stunning new album from Tel Aviv-based dark ambient project, Silence & Strength, The Lord of the Garden. The project is spearheaded by, well, the only person in the band, the multi-talented Stephen Friedman, whose stylings you may recognize from the iconic Choshech - חושך logo as well as some of that band's production. And it seems that aside from being a man of wonderful taste as well as an author, Mr. Friedman is also quite good at making the musics himself.

If your soul yearns for lush, ritualistic, haunting dark ambient well then the newest release by the incredible project Silence & Strength is now streaming exclusively on the site + video + a whole lot of pretty flowers. Check it out.

💀 Happy release day! **On Bandcamp and all streaming platforms** This is another Ulican album that hasn't been released. I recorded it in 2001 with my friend Mary Kelly who wrote and sang the majority of the songs on this album. That's a photo I took of her on the album cover. We liked the material we recorded, but I had no idea what I was doing with mixing it and hated the way it came out. So I ended up scrapping it. As a result, very few people have heard these songs. Luckily, I've kept all the tracks, and now that I have the tools to improve the mix, I can finally release it. We were very much into all things electronic, trip-hop, and ethnic at the time, from Portishead and DJ Shadow to Mercan Dede, which influenced the material on this album.

On some of the tracks, I experimented with electronic sounds, beats, and the songs of Rabbi Baruch Shalom HaLevi Ashlag (the RABASH), the son of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Ha-Levi Ashlag, known as the Baal Ha-Sulam. I was trying to create some cabalistic goth electronica. A couple of my friends in Israel attended Michael Laitman's group, which was only a small gathering in an apartment in Petah Tikva, nothing like the enormous empire it is today. They played these tracks to Laitman, but he reacted somewhat skeptically. Nevertheless, they are here in this album, presenting an integral part of our music at the time.

Unfortunately, I haven't been in contact with Mary since I left the States and returned to Israel. She didn't use email at the time. All I had was her home address, which has probably changed several times since then. I hope she went on singing and did something serious with it because she was very good at it. And I wish she could somehow hear this album. I believe miracles do happen. Without them, I wouldn't be here today. So, I hope, by some miracle, she can hear these songs now. ✡️

💀 The first release of this year is not going to be something new but actually something super old. It's another old Ulican album that was never released. I recorded this material in 2001 with my friend Mary Kelly who wrote and sang almost all the songs on it. Experimenting with electronic beats and samples, it came out as a weird mixture of melancholy electronica with nods to Portishead, DJ Shadow, Peter Murphy, and Mercan Dede. I loved what we recorded but hated how the mix sounded. So I ended up chucking it. As a result, only a few people have ever heard this material. Thankfully I saved all the initial tracks, so I could mix everything nicely this time. The album will soon appear on all streaming platforms. In the meantime, here's a small taste in the form of its title track. ✡️
