Benny is a great young man, an amazing fisherman and will be prove to be an equally amazing guide. Here with his Dad and a true trophy, Sea Run Arctic Char. Just another special time in Iceland, especially here with father and son on the river. It was such a pleasure for me to be part of this moment with Matti and Benny.

Luong Tam is yet another wonderful personality in the fly fishing industry. Whenever I see him, he always greets me with a warm smile and pleasant hello. I return the kind gesture and let out a bold, TENKARA TANUKI. That’s obviously not his name but it’s his company and his brand. He loves tenkara and he is a master tenkara rod designer.

A tanuki is a small, Japanese racoon dog and a cartoon of this tanuki is his mascot. Like his mascot, Luong has a playful spirit. Don’t let this confuse you though, his tenkara rods are tools of precision and excellence. Frank Burr, the Golden Trout Dude, says the Tenkara Tanuki rods are the finest tenkara rods in the world, including the ones made in Japan. That’s a bold statement.

It’s always a privilege to connect people who are absolute experts in their field. That is what Phil Rowley is in the area of still water fly fishing. The Orvis Guide To Still Water Trout has quickly become the top reference material on still water trout fishing. We dive deep into the tactics of how you can become a better still water fisherman. With these great tips, you will feel more confident on your local trout pond or lake. Additionally, Phil reveals some of the top destinations in the world to use your new skills to catch a trophy trout.

Over the years of visiting at all the fly fishing shows, I am honored to say that Phil has become a great friend. He epitomizes the friendly nature of the fly fishing community. Whether it’s a quick conversation to say hello, or grabbing dinner or a drink, Phil’s light heart and humorous nature make him a blast to hang out with. Plus, he’s a Boston Bruins fan, so he has great hockey acumen as well.

Rollin Schuster and Augusto Russell of Cross Current Insurance came highly recommended. I have been very fortunate to be selective who I promote on the podcast. Seeing the team at Cross Current Insurance as regular supporters of The Fly Fishing Shows and as leaders in community and non-profit support was what caught my attention. Hearing recommendations from my guide friends about the quality of their insurance and as well as their service is what I did it for me. I originally met Rollin through his daughter, Abbie Schuster, who runs Kissmet Outfitters, a guide and fly shop in Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

In this podcast, we get to know Rollin and Augusto, chat about the benefits of trip insurance and even find out about Augusto’s fishing origin story and how that fits in with a bamboo pole and a water buffalo. You won’t want to miss it.

talks about how his camera has taking him places he only dreamed about. How the camera can be a gateway to fulfill your wildest dreams and passions. I’m so fortunate to travel to some very cool places and meet some amazing people.

Our first stop in Patagonia was and the Futaleufú, the Rio Grade river in Argentina. My mind was blown just from the ground and then I threw the drone up. Wow!

Along with the beauty, the Futaleufú holds beautiful Rainbow and Brown Trout.

If you have also dreamt about Patagonia, shoot me a DM as we are heading back in Dec of ‘24 to get on my ‘more info” list. I have reserved a few slots for you to come along too.

The journey continues…

Andy Mill has led an extraordinary life and this is an extraordinary podcast. His time as an Olympic downhill skier, his marriage, and unfortunate divorce from tennis star, Chris Everett Llyod and his dominance in the most revered tarpon tournaments is all in here. It was a very easy conversation and Andy’s stories kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Being a past ski instructor, I was riveted by his journey from the weekend, Nastar races to the winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria and Lake Placid, New York.

You will learn quickly that Andy is an open book. In addition to some of his successes, he does not hold back on sharing some of personal heartbreaks, and failures as for him, it’s all part of the journey to who he is today.

As we moved into the fishing and the tarpon portions of the podcast, I was blown away and so thankful for the teaching and instruction Andy offers about becoming a better tarpon fisherman. When you think about the truest, professional tarpon fly anglers you think of names like Stu Apte, Lefty Kreh and Andy Mill. His knowledge is the reference material for anyone who wants to improve their saltwater fly fishing skills.

The conversation flowed nicely and not surprising as Andy, along with his son Nicky, produce and conduct their own podcast, The Millhouse Podcast.

I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for such an unbelievable Patagonian experience. I was hesitant to even start posting because it was such a wild ride, you wonder if a post can appropriately capture the feeling. Then Tomas sends me a mega-folder of some magical shots. Here are just a few. The dude is a magician with a 🎥 & 📸.

So thankful for all my new friends and Gauchos I met along the way.

It’s so hard to compare and I love Iceland so much, but Patagonia is also very special and is now part of the FFJ program. We are returning next December and I’m honored to be working with a very special group and group of people.

What can I say, Tom Rosenbauer is the founder and pioneer when it comes to fly fishing podcasts. His work with Orvis, the information he shares on The Orvis Podcast, the fly box, the Orvis Online Learning Center and all his other work including his books and his work on The New Fly Fisher has made him a legend and an absolute gem within the fly fishing community.

For his contributions, Tom received The American Museum of Fly Fishing Izaak Walton Award in 2019.

Back for a second time on the Fly Fishing Journeys podcast, in this episode, we learn about Tom’s story and history with Orvis, how and why he stayed with one company for over 46 years, how he has written over 20 books on fly fishing, his tie off’s with Tim Flagler and much more.

As we move into the next part of the pod, I ask Tom how to pick quality fly fishing equipment. Particularly how to go about choosing a quality fly fishing rod, reel and line. We finished talking about some of the latest product releases from Orvis.

If you want to meet Tom, get a book signed or possibly take one of his fly tying classes, come to the International Fly Tying Symposium on Nov 11 & 12, 2023 at the Hilton DoubleTree in Somerset, NJ. You can find the details at internationalflytyingsymposium.com.

This was a moving podcast with Chris Hanson as he opens about his journey of losing his mom at a young age, being adopted by his stepdad, his adventures in Alaska where he trained and ran a dog sled team and so much more. We discuss his movie The Day I Disremembered and how this medical episode led him to the sport he loves, fly fishing.

Chris is a talented fly fisher and has a wonderful social media presence. He is an Ambassador with Douglas Fly Rods and Cortland lines. We close talking about another one of his loves, Bourbon and his custom blend.

Jeff Currier has always been an inspiration to me. Someone I have looked up to. Of course there is the massive, worldwide, fly fishing travel with over 440 different species on the fly, but there is way more than that. It’s his relationship with his wife Granny, the kindness he offers others at his booth and around the Fly Fishing Shows and his willingness to give back with his tips, advice and presentations.

When I think of the fly fishing community and what it should look like, I think of Jeff Currier. I have been privileged to get to know him at the shows and through our podcast chats. He has always been gracious with this time and advice.

Be sure to stop by and see Jeff and Granny at their booth at The Fly Fishing Show where he shares his artwork, does presentations and performs casting instruction. You can purchase his artwork in person or online at flyfishingjourneys.com.

My guest on this episode is a pioneer in fly fishing YouTube videos. I remember first watching Ken Tanaka on YouTube on these crazy adventures back in the day. He has continued to fine tune his craft and provides an amazing resource to fly anglers around the world. To watch his YouTube videos today is like going on that journey with him and maybe that’s why it resonates with me.

I loved sitting down with him and I know you will enjoy this episode as we dive into his backstory of growing up in a Japanese American household, the early days of the Wish 4 Fish story and some of his current adventures from around the world.
