HIDDEN SCARS

Chapter 1

I can't take care of you and your children; haven't I been trying for you and your family? Brenda yelled at Jasiel who was already tired of Brenda's yelling almost everyday

You're keeping quiet on me Jasiel... Brenda shouted

What do you want from me Brenda? Asked Jasiel with a calm voice

Brenda stood up from where she has been sitting and stood in front of Jasiel pointing her index finger at him

Jasiel I have been catering for this family right from the moment your wife left and you losed your job,pay my bride price you don't want to pay and you're here tying me down with all your responsibilities... Cried Brenda

Brenda I have always appreciated your efforts and I've told you to leave if you want to,am I the one who is supposed to make decisions for you? Jasiel retorted

This is really getting out of hand,is this the thank you I'm supposed to from you? For feeding you and your children for months now, you know what,I can't do this anymore,I am leaving this house today! Brenda said

Ungrateful human being... shouted Brenda going inside the room to get her bags

My wife left me just two months ago and you are here forcing me to marry you, please if you can't stay leave then... said Jasiel trying to hold back his tears

Dad is everything alright? Jasiel's daughter Laurel asked looking around in confusion

Yes Laurel, everything is fine,where is junior? He asked trying to dismiss her

I heard you so clear, are you having issues with auntie Brenda? Questioned Laurel

No,go to your room! He replied

Laurel turned to leave and saw Brenda with her box and handbag

I'm leaving for good... said Brenda slamming the door

Dad how are we going to survive? Laurel asked

Laurel stood up and went to the kitchen, she quietly opened the pot of soup and saw nothing there
No foodstuffs were left for them, she went back to her room and continued pressing her phone

In the night Jasiel came back home with a nylon on his left hand,he has been outside helping people carry bricks,he was paid a little amount which he used on getting something for him and his two beautiful children

His wife left them two months ago, she wasn't ready to settle for a lesser life
She wished to live a luxurious life and she got what she wanted when she met a politician who promised her heaven and earth

Welcome dad... Said Laurel

I haven't set my eyes on junior today...

Junior has a lot of assignments to do... Laurel replied collecting the nylon from him

Junior came out and hugged him,he sat on the floor waiting for Laurel to bring plate and spoons

Dad there's no sugar in this garri...He complained dropping his spoon

Laurel looked at her father and smiled

Junior sugar has finished and David's mum doesn't have sugar... Laurel said

Junior quietly stood up from the floor and went to continue with his assignment

Jasiel bursted out crying in front of his daughter who stared at him and joined him

Auntie Brenda wouldn't have left us,mum wouldn't have left us... Laurel cried

Jasiel didn't say a word,he got up from the chair and dashed into the toilet where he cried out his heart

Laurel promised herself to go extra mile to make sure they feed three times a day

The next morning she left the house with some of her clothes

CHAPTER 1

You ain't saying anything Amaka,what's the matter? Uche asked her bewildered friend
Nothing much Amaka, I'm going to be fine.. Amaka replied as tears dropped down her cheeks

Nothing much and you're already crying, is there something you aren't telling me Amaka?

I'm fine uche, let's go inside.. Amaka said standing to her feet

Uche kept on looking at her like when someone has seen a ghost

Uche get up let's go inside, I'm famished..she lied

Amaka sat down where she has been sitting and broke down in tears again
I'm really a disgrace to my parents, what do I tell my parents,I'm yet to write my senior waec and here I am pregnant, how do I explain this to my parents? Where and how do I start from? What have I gotten myself into? What have I done to myself? Where do I start from? She asked herself crying uncontrollably

She saw her mum coming from afar,she cleaned her tears and ran inside her room

Amaka, Amaka... Her mum called
Yes mum..she answered rushing out to meet her

Amaka sat on the sofa shaking her head
She thought about what her mum had just said "Like mother like daughter" is she not my mother? Why is she even treating me like an outcast? She wondered biting her lips

CHAPTER FOUR

"You've come again, which one is something is weird about him?". Mama tackled Mama Ada immediately. "Don't come and pour sand into my garri!". Mama rebuked her again. I stood awful looking at them.

"I felt goosebumps on me the moment our eyes met. Mama Olive, you. Know me and how true my feelings can be". Mama Ada softly asserted. She spoke so sure but calm. I sensed the panic in her tiny voice. I wasn't really observant.

"Don't judge the book by the cover, Mama Ada. It's people like you thar don't want good things to come to my family since your own two daughters haven't seen husbands to marry".

"Mama! That's rude!". I intervened abruptly. Mama shut me up angrily and faced Mama Ada.

" Thank you for the vegetables you brought. You can now leave. You Oliver, go and keep him comfortable let me get the elders". Mama hurriedly left the compound. Mama Ada exhaled and shrugged. She turned to the car looking at Jayden through the windscreen. Her looks were extremely strange. Jayden too was looking at her with such straight furious face I hardly had seen on him. I was lost. I looked from him to Mama Ada.

"Do you know him somewhere?". I asked Mama Ada disturbingly.

"Have you met his family?". Mama Ada three back the question. I hesitated, then I nodded in the negative.

"All that glitters is not gold." Mama Ada coolly said and started going. While she went, she kept turning to look at Jayden in the car. I saw Jayden's eyes trailing her. I walked quickly Jayden.

"Do you know her anywhere?". I threw the same question to Jayden who wasn't even startled to see me.

"No, I don't. She looks troublesome". That was Jayden's reply.

"She talked like you've met". I insisted.

"No, we haven't ever. She doesn't just like me". He sighed. I became calm. I left to make some food. Mama entered shortly after and joined me in the kitchen.

SATURDAY NOON...

I took Jayden to see Mama in the village since the marriage plans needed to kick off. Mama was seated under the big Orange tree in the compound on her wooden bench picking beans. We drove in and alighted from the car. Jayden and I walked up to Mama and greeted her. Mama's joy knew no bounds on sighting Jayden. Mama had always wanted me to get married and Jayden's presence already spoke volume. She receptively welcomed us and asked we go in.

"Mama, we will be comfortable outside awhile". Jayden solicited amicably. I nodded in support. Mama didn't argue. She was overwhelmed.

"Oliver my daughter, your husband's very handsome". Mama complimented. I made faces for her.

"He's not my husband yet, Mama. He's my fiance". I corrected her. She opposed me and we lightly argued.

"That's by the way, let me run and inform the elders of your arrival while you go in and get him something to eat". Mama said and was about leaving when Mama Ada her friend entered with a basket of vegetables on her head.

"Ndewo Mama". I quickly greeted her. She stopped and curiously bent to recognize me. I greeted her again.

"Ah, Oliver! Is that you?". Mama Ada smiled happily and beckoned in me to come hug her. I embraced her. She started narrating her city life stories when she was young.

"I brought the vegetable you requested I get for you from the market". She finally turned to my mother who stood akimbo looking at us.

"Who's that young man over there?". Mama Ada spotted Jayden who sharply bowed to greet her. Mama Ada's face suddenly turned pale. Her smiles gradually dwindled. She looked at Jayden like she knew him somewhere.

"Oliver, let me get my phone in the car". Jayden hurriedly got up and walked away. I didn't understand their dispositions.

"That's Oliver's husband to be". Mama quickly replied Mama Ada with a furnished smile. "I'm happy that finally she has brought a man home". Mama added.

CHAPTER TWO

As I took the phone from Elizabeth to check, Jayden called my name. I turned sharply. He was already close to me. The retuned the phone to Elizabeth without checking anything.

"I've been waiting for you". Jayden calmly held my waist and pulled me along. I noticed Elizabeth startled but I didn't pay attention to her reactions. Jayden gave Elizabeth a stoned-dead look that I only thought he was upset woth her because she kept me.

"By-e". Elizabeth fearfully waved at me. Jayden and I got into the car and he drove.

"What was telling you that kept you?". Jayden asked with a straight face.

"Oh! Yes, she was telling me something weird. That....".

"That I wasn't in the picture?". Jayden interrupted me instantly. I Marvelled.

"How do you know?". I asked bewilderingly.

"I heard her." He replied.

"Oh! I didn't know you were that closed to us". I inhaled. "I guess she mistook something about the pictures. I didn't really get to see what she was talking about".
Jayden drove on without a word. I kept talking. He only listened with faint smiles. Those loving smiles that made me fall in love him. Jayden cut every lady's heart. He had a good-looking face, fair, with a Socratic beard neatly lined. He had a dapper, military moustache. He had an adventurous personality with a Viking-gold hair. I had loved his Samson physique and of course he loved my built comfortable disposition.
Jayden had promised me marriage but had refused introducing me to any member of his family. That has been my fear if he actually meant his love for me.
I knew Jayden's few friends; Raymond and Victor only for the one year we've been dating.
I took his phone one if the nights and tried collecting some family members' contacts but didn't see any number that indicated a relation. Several times I have asked him why he hid things from me but he will just wave everything off. Jayden was calm, very calm and I admired everything about him.

Chapter 4

I'm not interested auntie Zara,I can't do that... Khloe shouted

Why are you raising your voice Khloe? See I'll do whatever you want me to do if you accept to do this for me,I need a baby for crying out loud...Zara said crying

I know those tears are crocodile tears I'm out of here,oh that's why you brought me here right? auntie Zara I am too small for that...

You ain't small Khloe, you're the only person who can do this for me 😩,I would have come along with Lissa but she doesn't look like who can keep secrets...Zara explained

Franklin sat in the parlour with an alcohol lying on the floor,he was meditating and crying
Khloe came in looking around to see if Zara was coming

She sat close to Franklin who looked depressed and frustrated

Zara was staring at them from the staircase

"She's a bad girl" Zara whispered

Franklin gently pulled off Khloe's clothes and the rest was history

Khloe picked up her clothes and left for her room, she heaved a sign of relief and landed on the bed

Zara helped Franklin upstairs, she bathed him and covered him with the duvet like a newborn

Khloe sat in the parlour staring at the pictures which hung on the wall when Zara tapped her from behind

We are expecting a baby soon...Zara said

A baby? From who? Khloe asked

Zara was the first to wake up, she came downstairs to make breakfast for her husband who was arranging his files upstairs
She saw Khloe lying on the couch and shivering

Khloe go inside your room,why didn't you turn off the air condition? Zara asked

Khloe opened her eyes, she held herself tightly

Good morning auntie Zara... she greeted

Solomon for crying out loud I don't know,they want me to stay with auntie Zara

She has been throwing up lately

She wore her clothes and got ready to leave, her parents gave some pieces of advice before she left

The journey was a stressful one, her auntie bought edibles for her along the road
She got whatever she asked for but that didn't erase the thought of Auntie Zara being cruel from her mind

They got home very late in the night, Zara's husband was already waiting for them at the park

Welcome honey.. her husband said hugging her

I need to take my bath.. She replied walking to the car
She beckoned Khloe to enter the car and they zoomed off

Zara's husband showed Khloe her room, Khloe dropped her bag on the floor and jumped on the bed
She yawned loudly looking at the wallpapers and frames which were all over the room

She spread her hands and legs on the bed, she was about pulling the duvet when the light switched on

She opened her bag and brought out her phone, she searched her bag but couldn't find her charger

I said it, Lissa removed my charger from here.. Khloe yelled

The door opened and she fell on the bed pretending to be asleep

Khloe come and have dinner... her auntie said tapping her

Khloe stood up and followed her to the dinning room

How was the journey Khloe... Zara's husband Franklin asked

It was very stressful but I enjoyed it.. she replied and continued eating her food
She finished the whole plate of food and requested for more

When you're done eating you take your bath and have a good night rest.. Franklin said leaving the dinning table with his wife

Khloe was done eating but couldn't find her way back to her room, she sat down in the parlour looking around

I came out from this side,nooo from this other side,why will someone build this kind of house eh, this house is sooo confusing 😩.. She lamented

She stood up and opened one of the doors facing her
"Looks like my secondary school library" she said and closed the door

She lay on the couch, her body was paining her already

"Khloe stop acting like a village girl,be strong you're eighteen years old". She murmured to herself

I heard her whisper to auntie Gift how she killed my dad.. Diana told prisca after she had dropped her tray down

You didn't bother to do anything about it? Prisca asked

Gift didn't know what else to say, she knelt down and raised her hands up hitting her daughter to do the same
Henry looked at her for three minutes and went inside
He dropped his suitcase on the couch and went to check on his daughter but couldn't find her
He went to Martha's room,he opened the door without knocking and saw Raymond forcing himself on her

Raymond! Henry shouted

Martha screamed and jumped up covering her chest with her palm

Where is Diana? He asked

Erm, she went to school.. Martha lied

I stopped by to pick her up and her class teacher told me that my daughter hasn't been in school for the past three months,where is she

Raymond looked at Martha, Martha looked at him and sighed

What were you two doing? Henry asked

He was trying to zip my gown.. Martha replied

Henry locked the two of them inside the room and left the house to look for his daughter
He searched for his daughter but she was nowhere to be found
He searched for his daughter for good three days he was about going to the police station to make a report when he saw prisca arranging cartons for an old woman

Prisca turned to see who was calling her,at the sight of Henry she jumped up and called Diana who was sweeping the woman's shop

Diana saw her dad and jumped on him

What are you doing here Diana? Henry asked dusting his daughter's body

Your wife made life miserable for me... Diana replied, she went further to tell her dad what Martha, Raymond and Gift did to her

Martha and Raymond were locked up without food and water,they cried and begged Henry for forgiveness
Gift was arrested first,Henry bailed her because of her daughter

Henry unlocked the door and asked Martha to remove the clothes in her tummy
She hesitated for awhile and brought them out shivering like a fowl

Dad I was molested by Raymond.. Diana said in the presence of the police

What!!!! Henry shouted giving Raymond a hot slap

Auntie Martha asked one of her friends to sleep with me that was how I lost my virginity

Diana was quick to forgive them but requested something from them
