"But while states and educational institutions are closing down their diversity initiatives, research has shown that very little has changed in terms of how women and minorities feel about the white cultures they encounter once they smash through glass ceilings. Another puzzling but rarely discussed aspect of the attacks on DEI programs is that they often ignore the benefits the programs have brought to white women in the private sector. According to the authors of an annual McKinsey & Co. study, white women have benefited disproportionately from corporate DEI efforts, coming to hold 22 percent of C-suite positions, far outstripping minority women who hold only 6 percent."

As many states move to dismantle their diversity, equity and inclusion programs and politicians turn the term into an insult, we need to keep sight of these efforts’ potential for good.

“Systems in this country are not broken,” Sellers said. “They work as they were intended to work.”

Those systems, like the healthcare and criminal justice system, must be “deconstructed” and reimaged to include Black and brown communities, he said. "

Bakari Sellers discusses race, faith, and the upcoming election at a Charlotte event. He emphasizes the importance of voting and rebuilding institutions.

🚨🚨New Episode Out Now!🚨🚨

Headlines scream the "decline" of DEI, but here's the truth: most efforts have been performative. We're talking black squares ⬛️ on social media, not dismantling systemic bias.

On this episode of Systemic, our host Dan Kimbrough talks with Farah Bala, a Leadership EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Oppression) expert from Farsight Agency. We unpack why surface-level DEI fails and what true inclusion looks like.

Farah Bala's story reminds us that belonging starts with feeling welcome, regardless of background. We'll also hear how she navigated identity, immigration, and career changes.

Is DEI dead? No, but the performative efforts are gasping for breath.

We explore:

💡Why superficial DEI efforts fail.
💡How to move beyond outdated practices and have uncomfortable conversations.
💡Leadership's role in creating lasting change.

Tune in to find out what real anti-bias work looks like.

Here's another clip from my upcoming conversation with Farah Bala of Farsight Agency.

In thinking about how race plays out in America, whether you're born here or have immigrated young, at some point there comes the "aha💡" moment when you realize one of these things is not like the other.

As Farah put it for her, it was the moment race was ascribed to her.

One life lesson most African-Americans of a certain age have always been taught = No matter the space, position, accomplishments, or accolades, if moving in white spaces, never forget - You'll always be seen as Black before anything else. And depending on the biases in that space, your accomplishments and failures will always be viewed in that light.

The next episode of Systemic will drop next week.

We sit with Farah Bala of Farsight Agency. Farah Bala is a Leadership EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Oppression) Executive Coach, Consultant and Speaker.

Implementing and sustaining inclusive practices can be difficult. Farah explains why starting this process with your organization's leadership is so crucial.

So how bad are prisons? I mean, they're all criminals anyway? Well, did you know the US prison system was built on torture?

ICYMI: In our latest episode, sociologist and professor Brittany Friedman dives deep into this dark history and its lasting impact on our society in this episode.

We can't just "sprinkle fertilizer" on a rotten system. We must uproot the harmful ideas about punishment and reimagine how we treat each other.

Join us for an important and impactful conversation.

🎧🎙New Systemic episode out now! 🎧🎙

We discuss COVID-19's deadly impact in prisons with reform advocate Brittany Friedman. Designed for control, not care, prisons denied masks and "disappeared" sick people into solitary. It's time to transform our punitive system and work towards true justice and compassion.

🎧✨Happy New Year and new Systemic episode 🎧✨

The latest episode of Systemic will drop tomorrow, Jan 4th.

This episode, sponsored by the Black Equity Coalition, discussed how COVID-19 ravaged prisons due to their punitive design not allowing for safety measures like masks. Shockingly, many were punished for homemade masks or "disappeared" into solitary confinement without care when showing symptoms - like Tiffany Mofield who died gasping alone in a shower.

Our guest is sociologist and professor Brittany Friedman from the University of Southern California, who champions reimagining a new prison system, not rooted in slavery and racism. Make sure you subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.

🎙New Systemic Dropping Tuesday, Aug. 15🎙

Cleveland Way is the Community Engagement Manager with POISE Foundation and works with the Black Equity Coalition. His role involves engaging with communities and organizations already serving Black and brown communities, understanding their needs, and finding ways to enhance their work and provide resources. He works with over 150 ambassadors across the state to implement programs focused on health, vaccinations, and social determinants of health.

Cleveland is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has a wife of 22 years, five children of their own, and three adopted. He received two master's degrees from Liberty University: A Master of Arts in Religion and a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling. He planted a church in Williamsport, PA, and currently serves as the Pastor of Cogan House Community Church. He has twenty-two years of experience in the Human Service field and a passion for serving and helping individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency and self-worth.

Upon recognizing the lack of collaboration and gaps in services, Cleveland has been instrumental in enhancing community resource relationships while developing programs to serve the community through resource mapping specific to the individual being served and making them work-ready. He also raised awareness of the community's need for a hands-on approach and established a new perspective on life for those experiencing anything from homelessness to incarceration. He needs to have an impact on every life he encounters.

07/07/2023

Hollywood’s representation of underserved and marginalized populations has been under scrutiny since the first film flickered. Authentic storytelling that fully embraces the complexity and vibrancy of any people must be rooted in, and informed by, those people.

Early in the 20th Century, film provided a window to the lives, stories, and narratives of those far and wide. And, as we learned from the comic book industry, with great power, comes great responsibility! Unfortunately, many early filmmakers used this power to further spread inaccuracies and hatred. One of these most famous films is “Birth of a Nation,” D. W. Griffith's 1915 adaptation of the 1905 novel, “The Clansmen.” It tells the story of two families dealing with the fallout of the civil war with a very slanted view.

To contrast, early Black filmmaker and novelist Oscar Micheaux wrote and directed the 1919 film “The Homesteader,” which chronicled life for Black Americans during post-civil War, but from an authentic perspective, offering a counter-argument to Griffith and the work of other filmmakers at the time.

In this episode of Systemic, our host Dan Kimbrough sits down with Dr. Charlene Regester from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Regester teaches in the Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies, and her work focuses on early black film history, including black filmmakers, actresses, actors, and performers.

Our discussion looks at the life and works of Oscar Micheaux and how we almost lost them; the film-going and artistic experience for Black people in the early 20th century; and the lessons filmmakers and society as a whole should learn from these early efforts.
