With the frenzy of the holiday shopping season rapidly approaching, here is a bit of Winter Park retail history from the days before “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”.

“Winter Park’s stature as an upscale retail mecca was bolstered in 1948 with the arrival of Eve Proctor Morrill, a former fashion buyer for major department stores in Philadelphia. Morrill enlivened Park Avenue with The Proctor Shops, one offering sporting goods and the other offering stylish women’s attire. She also championed beautification projects for Winter Park’s quaint but still sleepy downtown, where shop hours were sometimes erratic and more than a few merchants closed for the summer.

The Proctor Shops were sold in 1972 and later became Jacobson’s, a popular department store. But Proctor stayed active for decades to come, buying and selling property and raising funds for her favorite causes, including the Florida Symphony Orchestra and PESO (Participation Enriches Science, Music and Art Organizations), an advocacy group that she helped form.

The city honored Morrill with an “Eve Proctor Morrill Day’’ in 1985, during which a garden and plaque in Central Park were unveiled. The plaque is inscribed with lines from a poem by Logan Morrill, her late husband: “Love quietly and greatly. Seek immortality in those around you where we live eternally. In each day’s striving justify the lives we might have lived.’’

“I invite the viewer to look at life on a daily basis as a gift filled with fleeting moments. In this sometimes-tumultuous world of uncertainty and darkness, I encourage people to seek out the beauty that we’re blessed with each day — which is often found in ordinary places.”

“But girl, in case you haven't heard” you’ll see us on Thursday at Best of Winter Park - Free Concert from BOYS LIKE GIRLS

We’re beyond excited to announce that our 2023 Best of Winter Park celebration will include a free concert by platinum-record headliners Boys Like Girls. As part of our Centennial celebration and a thank you to our community for their support of the Chamber, which led to our award as a TOP 3 National Chamber of the Year, we’re amping up the wow factor for this year’s Best of Winter Park, hosted in partnership with Winter Park Magazine, presented by Lane Technology Solutions and Park Smiles Dentistry and supported by The Mayflower at Winter Park and Rothman Orthopaedic Institute.

The festivities start at 5:00 p.m. at the Central Park stage in downtown Winter Park. We’ll announce the finalists and winners of our annual Best of Winter Park competition, and then BOYS LIKE GIRLS will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. to rock the park!

Boys Like Girls have had a half a billion career streams, three platinum certified singles and two gold certified singles. Their platinum hit song “Two is Better Than One” featured pop star Taylor Swift. Boys Like Girls are currently in the middle of their North American tour, “The Speaking Our Language Tour”.

This event is free, but if you’re a Chamber member or part of a nominated business, please RSVP so we can anticipate your presence at the awards ceremony: https://winterpark.org/events/details/best-of-winter-park-nominee-member-registration-5051778?calendarMonth=2023-11-01

“No hassles, high prices or cover. Just lots of pool and pinball.”

Winter Park’s Fairbanks Inn, nicknamed the “FBI,” was a “rowdy hole in the wall” known for hosting “noisy jam sessions and touring grunge and metal bands,” according to Randy Noles in a 2015 issue of Winter Park Magazine. The club opened on the north side of Fairbanks Avenue in 1946 but migrated to a former gas station on the opposite side of the road in the 1970s. Napkins in the bar read “No hassles, high prices or cover. Just lots of pool and pinball.”

While many of the acts who played at the FBI were cover bands that performed rock standards, the venue also hosted nationally recognized acts such as Jacksonville’s Limp Bizkit (1994), Missing Persons (1996), and Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen (1999). According to Noles, the club closed in 2000. The venue’s sign is now part of the Morse Museum's extensive sign collection.

Thank you to Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and Soseki Modern Omakase for hosting an amazing Member Master Class!

Michelin-starred Chef Michael Collantes and 2023 Michelin Guide Florida Sommelier Award winner Benjamin Coutts took us through a curated selection of ceviche, hand rolls, and waygu steak with sake pairings.

Soseki Modern Omakase is Winter Park’s first and only Michelin-starred restaurant. It offers a formal Japanese style sushi experience along with a sake and wine program that challenges the traditional concept of beverage pairings.

Chef was kind enough to share some of their future plans with us and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
