New England Cable News (NECN) & NBC10 Boston will be launching my new crime thriller Helltown on 7-12 at 2pm on FB Live. Hope you'll join!
I grew up on Cape Cod and Provincetown exists as its own island on the tip of the Cape. There's really no place else like it. It's a burst of light that draws artists and eclectics from around the world but there's also darkness here. The name Helltown comes from the fact that the place was once an enclave for pirates and other renegades in the 1700's. Their ghosts permeate Provincetown to this day.
The setting is 1969. It's a year of reckoning for America.
The summer of love is a distant memory and overshadowed by the assassinations of RFK and MLK, a raging war in Vietnam and the bloody violence of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Woven into the historical landscape of Helltown we have Nixon's inauguration, Chappaquiddick, the moon landing and the Manson murders. The characters have both direct and tangential connections with all of these major events. I look at 2022 the same way that I look at 1969. There has been a huge cultural and political shift in our country. We are living in a dangerous time where darkness is overshadowing light.
I've worked as an Investigative journalist for 25 years. I've covered more than 50 homicides and had access to more than 2,000 documents and crime scene photos in this case. In my opinion, this was the worst serial murder case since Jack The Ripper.

Casey Sherman explores the sheer brutality and depravity of a Cape Cod serial killer in his acclaimed new crime thriller HELLTOWN. Read his in-depth interview with the Cape Cod Times here.

Author Casey Sherman's new "Helltown" book explores 1969 Cape killings by Tony Costa, and how writers Kurt Vonnegut and Norman Mailer were connected.

The Official Trailer for Casey Sherman's next epic crime thriller HELLTOWN debuts here along with a coveted Starred Review in the new edition of Booklist.
"Cape Cod is a place of mutable beauty with a stormy history anchored to a rough and rowdy settlement known as Helltown, undergirding Provincetown. Journalist and best-selling author Sherman grew up on Cape Cod, and now exhumes the full, horrifying story of serial killer Tony Costa’s grotesque 1969 rampage. A charismatic drug dealer and user, Costa attracted young disciples and easily reeled in the gentle women he murdered. Sherman portrays Costa with ferocious intimacy, tracking his every move and channeling the inner voice that propelled his macabre acts. Sherman also illuminates the minds and lives of two Cape Cod writers and fathers—one flamboyantly pugnacious and famous, the other brooding and still struggling—who were galvanized by the killings, mixing avidly researched facts with what he calls “elements of fictional storytelling” to portray Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut to vivid effect. Sherman incisively aligns the shocking Cape Cod killings with the even more diabolical violence of Charles Manson and his followers, the Vietnam War and antiwar protests, the Apollo 11 mission, and the tragic scandal of Chappaquiddick. Readers will not soon forget Sherman’s gripping and elucidating web of true crime and literary history tracing the personal, communal, political, and artistic repercussions of gruesome killings during a time of indelible ferment.
