Heart-warming conversation with Detroiter, violinist Regina Carter. She, Louis Hayes, and Kenny Garrett will receive their NEA Jazz Master awards Saturday, April 1st at the The Kennedy Center. You can also see the talk on "One Detroit" Thursday from Detroit Public Television. What a way to start Jazz Appreciation Month! Thank you Regina, for the time and for your inspirational music.

Today I talked with the "Dames Brown": Athena Johnson, La Ray Starr and Teresa Marbury about their show this Sunday at The Riverside Arts Center. They're making their Ypsilanti debut at "Press Play - The Fall For Art Fundraiser 2022". Great women from Detroit and Ann Arbor. Great cause!! This morning Chuck Redd and I got up early to record a conversation about Detroit jazz vibraphone players and a vibes player who loved Detroit jazz musicians even though he was based in Los Angeles - Terry Gibbs. Chuck has led a fulfilling jazz life performing with Charlie Byrd, Ray Brown, Barney Kessell, Monty Alexander (and many others) and is in residency through Wednesday with bassist Paul Keller. Tonight's Zal Gaz Grotto set kicks off the fall return for the PKO - Paul Keller Orchestra - and a salute to Terry Gibbs who loved Detroit jazz. He was beloved in Detroit, especially in the 1950s when Terry Pollard was his pianist. Terry Gibbs appeared on the Soupy Sales TV show and wrote a great little swinging song "Soupy's On" for Sales.
