9️⃣1️⃣. This life that I’ve been blessed to live is not one that I take for granted. As a little black boy growing up in the South Side of Chicago, making it to 91 wasn’t even a dream because it never seemed possible. But as I stand before you today, I am grateful for every person who lent me a shoulder to stand on…From Count Basie to Nadia Boulanger to Joseph Powe to all of the individuals who told me I was worth another day.
To all-a-y’awl out there, never underestimate the positive impact that you can have on a kid’s life because it may just be the difference between them making it to 19 or 91. Thank you all for the beautiful birthday wishes & I pray that I can continue to pass down what the great’s have given to me!! Keep on keepin’ on…U know I am!

On December 18th, 1938, Barney Josephson opened the doors of Cafe Society Downtown– New York’s first fully-integrated nightclub. Although many nightclubs at the time featured black performers, few allowed black guests. Those that did forced black patrons to sit in separate sections with poor views of the stage. At the Cafe Society, guests of all races were treated equally, with no segregation of seating.

The Cafe Society became a regular performance hub for many of New York’s jazz greats, including Billie Holliday, Josh White, Art Tatum, and Mary Lou Williams. Mary Lou was a regular pianist at the Cafe Society throughout the 1940s– the same period in which she wrote her celebrated .

Though the Cafe Society was forced to close due to political pressure in 1948, its existence had opened a door for the winds of change in New York. Barney Josephson and Mary Lou remained in touch, and in the 1970s, she became a nightly pianist at his new club, The Cookery in Greenwich Village.

Mary Lou often found herself in the center of jazz history as it unfolded around her. Learn more about Mary Lou and her life via our Link in Bio. ⬆️
