PUM Contributor Jack L. Daniel writes, “Pitt Demonstrates What is Possible in Terms of Equity and Social Justice..."

"Now that the aforementioned new appointees have significant seats at the “Pitt table,” hopefully they will join with those previously seated to produce a sea change in Pitt’s equity and social justice outcomes as evidenced by things such as [1] Black students graduating at rates equal to or greater than the student body average, especially in STEM fields; [2] Pitt significantly increasing its contracts with Black-owned and operated companies; [3] dramatic increases in Black professional staff; [4] increased hiring of Blacks from the Pittsburgh area; and [5] exponential increases in sponsored research related to the Black diaspora. Indeed, in the spirit of the self-proclaimed “prophet,” it should be remembered that, instead of merely taking a seat, there came a time when he turned over the “money tables” in the temple courts and drove some away from the tables! Truly, “anything is possible at Pitt” and, with Chancellor Gabel’s leadership, sooner than later Pitt can become a world-class leader in all aspects of equity and social justice....”

Pittsburgh high schoolers spend a summer engaged in STEM through this Pitt program

Oday Abushaban first heard about Pitt Bio Outreach when his older brother mentioned a summer program where students could learn about microbiology and participate in research labs. As a high schooler, Abushaban wasn’t sure what career he wanted to pursue, but knew working in a lab would be the best way for him to decide what areas of science interested him most.
So, he joined the Gene Team. Founded in 2006, the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Biological Sciences program teaches high school students in the Pittsburgh area about biological sciences and provides college preparatory mentoring.

Lecture: Pittsburgh's Own Mal Goode, Network News' First Black Correspondent

Liann Tsoukas & Rob Ruck
in conversation with Edwina Kaikai
Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.
Carnegie Library Lecture Hall

Mal Goode (1908–1995) became network news’s first African American correspondent in 1962. Raised in Homestead and Pittsburgh, he worked in the mills, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, and went on to become a journalist for the Pittsburgh Courier and later for local radio. Race prevented him from breaking into television until Jackie Robinson dared ABC to give him a chance. Goode’s life and work are remarkable in their own right, but his struggles and achievements also speak to larger issues of American life and the African American experience.
