WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN…… Historic WMID-AM signal debuts TRIMULCAST New FM signal introduces 50s, 60s & 70s classics to listeners who don't tune much to AM
(August 8, 2019) - Equity Communications’ AM radio Oldies simulcast on WMID 1340 AM & WCMC 1230 AM Atlantic City-Cape May added an FM signal this week, creating a first-of-its-kind trimulcast of Oldies programming in South Jersey. The new signal – Wildwood Crest-licensed 93.1 FM – is co-owned by Equity Communications LP & was the former easy listening station WEZW. The new signal provides FM coverage to the WMiD / WCMC AM simulcast in portions of Atlantic and Cape May counties. This trimulcast is an effort to introduce ‘50s ‘60s & 70s Classic Oldies to listeners who don’t tune into AM for music and haven’t heard these songs in thirty years.
“We know WMID has a fanatical following around the country thanks to our streaming at ClassicOldiesWMID.com and across the WMiD mobile app,” Equity president/owner Gary Fisher said. “Now our local South Jersey listeners can have the same quality listening experience and enjoy these timeless classics in digital FM stereo.”
Fisher has been known to personally answer emails & phone calls from oldies fans across the nation listening to the station online. “While our company owns many popular & profitable FM stations in Atlantic City, WMID is the only one I receive weekly calls and letters about, simply thanking us for programming this station and keeping this music alive,” he said. He added that some of WMiD’s most loyal local fans are disc jockeys from other stations in Atlantic City, Philadelphia & New York. “They’re our fiercest critics, because they know what songs we should be playing better than anyone,” Fisher continued.
Despite the new FM signal, there are no plans to “modernize” WMiD’s classic oldies playlist to the 80’sbased programming heard on 98.3 WTKU & 94.3 WIBG. “Being different is what got us this wonderful audience in the first place. Whereas the typical oldies station plays a library of 300 songs from the 80s WMiD’s library spans three decades & more than 1500 songs. Sounding more like regular stations would be the kiss of death for WMiD”
