Recently, Mercy For Animals published their 2024 Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard which evaluated animal welfare commitments and transparency across 40 leading Canadian food companies.

Focusing on cage-free eggs, gestation-crate-free pork, and adherence to Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) standards, the report uncovered serious gaps in transparency, industry-wide “humanewashing,” and persistent animal welfare issues.

For a breakdown of the most troubling findings, read on.

Big news this week from United Way Greater Toronto. The investment aims to secure stable, accessible spaces for essential community services like healthcare, social programs, and recreational activities.

And that's significant since, with skyrocketing occupancy costs in the city - a 57% increase over the past decade - these vital services are increasingly at risk of displacement (Over 70% of these spaces are leased, leaving services vulnerable to rising rents and threatening the support networks upon which communities rely).

Deb Nelson, executive director & Tina Beck, deputy director of the Just Economy Institute share insights from three activists on how the climate and social justice movements can work together to achieve greater impact.

"As leaders of the JEI, which educates and supports financial activists, we see a rising desire to integrate social justice with climate justice work and bring a broader range of people into interwoven movements—impulses reflecting the realization that systemic change requires breaking out of silos.

To explore what it takes to succeed at this vital intersectional work, we interviewed three members of the JEI community who are already doing it: Akaya Windwood, lead advisor for Third Act and founder of the New Universal Wisdom and Leadership Institute; Tzeporah Berman, international program director at Stand.earth; and Stephone Coward II Coward, economic justice director at the Hip Hop Caucus."

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: It’s been said that 60 million Buffalo once called the plains of Canada and the U.S. home. These majestic animals provided food, shelter and clothing to Native American tribes while helping sustain the land’s complex ecosystem. But over-hunting, disease and other factors saw the buffalo’s numbers dwindle by the 20th century.

In a recent film, Singing Back the Buffalo, acclaimed buffalo activist and filmmaker Tasha Hubbard documents the efforts by some tribes to protect and revitalize the buffalo herds.

On the latest podcast episode of In the Business of Change, Hubbard explains the profound and unique interrelationship between the buffalo and Indigenous communities. We discuss her new documentary and how buffalo rematriation (revitalization), if successful, can prove a turning point for Indigenous nations and the sustainability of the land these animals once roamed.

Listen. Enjoy. Share.

Chris Soukup is a pioneer for accessible communication technologies for the deaf community. His company, Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc.(CSD), continues to challenge conventional thinking around what is possible for inclusive and equitable communications.

Most recently, he launched a new initiative designed to address some of the more difficult barriers for the deaf community. ASL Now is a seamless one-to-one direct video calling solution that removes the need for any third-party sign-language interpreter.

SEE Change spoke with Soukup about his many years of innovative work in the space, his exciting new initiative, and his vision of creating equitable and inclusive opportunities for deaf communities in a world that is increasingly automated.

In a world where over 1.5 billion plastic bottles are bought daily and microplastics – found in oceans and soil – are eaten by every level of the food chain, it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that plastic poses a real danger to human health.

A new documentary makes those findings frighteningly clear.

Plastic People Documentary: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics delves into the devastating impact of plastic pollution. The film reveals how plastic breaks down into microscopic particles which permeate our environment, from the air we breathe, to the water we drink, and the food we eat.

Terrified viewers may find themselves with one question: can anything be done about it? To discuss that question and more, SEE Change sat down with Rick Smith, executive producer (and one of the subjects) of the documentary, and president of the Canadian Climate Institute.

In the U.S. alone, the widening racial wealth gap is estimated to cost the country up to $1.5 trillion in economic growth by 2028.

To address the disparity, Echoing Green and the Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship have released a new report that focuses on solutions. "Innovating for Equity: Unlocking Value for Communities and Businesses" outlines pathways to elevate economic growth and promote economic stability while highlighting social innovators hard at work addressing the racial wealth gap.

SEE Change recently spoke with Liza Mueller, vice president of thought leadership at Echoing Green about the new report. We discuss the proven pathways for collaboration between social innovators from marginalized communities, governments and companies and how these collaborations offer untapped opportunities within the global economy.

: In the Canadian province of Ontario, over 8% of residents live in poverty. With rising inflation and escalating cost of living, it’s no surprise that a growing number of people face homelessness. In the city of Hamilton – located an hour west of Toronto – about 47% of people experiencing homelessness are considered chronically homeless.

To tackle the growing crisis, a Hamilton-based charity, Indwell, launched a community bond to fund the development of more affordable housing. They did so with the help of Tapestry Community Capital, a community investment and social finance leader.

In our latest Episode of In the Business of Change , we speak with Ryan Collins-Swartz of Tapestry & Nick van der Velde of Indwell about how this social finance tool - one growing in popularity - is helping Indwell tackle the homelessness crisis.

Pelican Bay, a supermax prison on the California-Oregon border, opened in 1989 designed specifically for mass-scale solitary confinement. For decades, it held men alone in tiny cells, indefinitely. That is, until some of them led the largest hunger strike in U.S. history in 2013 to protest solitary confinement

We spoke with the co-directors of a new documentary, The Strike - which recently had its world premiere at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival- about the challenges of solitary confinement, the far-reaching impact of their film and the hope that these hunger strikers offer others looking to effect change in the prison system.

: When the Canadian Museum for Human Rights decided to measure its impact, the journey the team ended up taking went much deeper. From building a theory of change to undergoing a strategic planning process, the road traveled was comprehensive and challenging.

But, as CEO Isha Khan says, it was well worth it.

On our latest Episode - part of a series sponsored by Junxion Strategy and co-hosted by its president Mike Rowlands - Khan and Charla Vall, consulting director at Junxion, discuss the extensive work they recently completed together.

Some questions we’ll explore include: What is a Theory of Change and why was that the starting point? How did the strategic planning process unfold? What frustrations did they encounter? And what takeaways could every business, big or small, learn to use on their own purposeful journey? Take a listen to find out!

From a theory of change to a strategic plan, the journey was long and complex. But it was worth it.

In our latest Op-Ed, Ryan Collins-Swartz, co-executive director at Tapestry Community Capital, argues that to meaningfully address the housing crisis simply building more homes is not the answer.

“We need to take active steps towards addressing the financialization of housing by building and preserving non-market housing,” he shares.

He proposes we focus on Community Land Trusts (CLTs). Funded by local investment CLTs are a rapidly growing solution that get to the heart of the problem, he says. “As a community, we need to support and help scale this model.”

"Imagine a world where stories don’t just entertain, but ignite empathy. Where words don’t just fill pages, but bridges divide and challenges injustice," says Ali Horriyat, founder of Compassiviste, a publishing house with impact its mandate.

"Imagine a publishing house where profit isn’t the driving force, where stories aren’t just commodities, and where the ultimate goal is not shareholder satisfaction, but the cultivation of compassion in the world."

On Our Latest Episode...

The South Side of Chicago faces significant challenges. Poverty and unemployment rates are high, particularly among Black youth. And properties sit vacant, seemingly abandoned like many of its residents.

But one social entrepreneur is fighting inner-city poverty and its effects, turning flowers into opportunities for at-risk youth living in Chicago’s toughest neighborhood.

On today's we speak with the one of the most positive, affable and lovely guests we've ever had on In the Business of Change: Quilen Blackwell of Southside Blooms, a social enterprise that hires and trains at-risk youth as florists and flower farmers. It's a project of Chicago Eco House which turns vacant lots into organic, solar-powered flower farms.

We chat about the flower industry, the South Side of Chicago, the ups (including a guest appearance on the Ellen Show) and downs of running a social enterprise, the importance of remaining joyful in the face of challenges - and a whole lot more.

Take a listen. This episode will bring you joy, we promise.

"Many Canadians, myself included, are surprised to learn that Canada has no federal animal welfare laws protecting animals in farms," says PJ Nyman, Corporate Engagement Manager at MMercy For AnimalsCanada.

In this latest piece, PJ explains why Canada's largest egg producer, is facing a backlash for continuing to obscure the facts of their egg-sourcing practices.

And that's why the organization is taking action, hoping to increase transparency, accountability and the Canadian public's right to know where their food is coming from when they buy from the Canadian egg industry’s biggest producer.
