The Science Snippet last night (Thurs July 25) was about cyanobacteria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanobacteria). They are sometimes called 'blue-green algae', though they are not actually algae, but bacteria. They can make biological energy, carbohydrates, and oxygen from light, water and carbon dioxide, and over billions of years made the Earth's atmosphere about 21% oxygen, as it is today.

The Science Snippet of the programme last Thursday night (July 18) was about lichen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichen). Lichen is actually a symbiotic composite of a photosynthesizing species (usually a green alga or cyanobacterium) and a fungus, once described as "fungi that have discovered agriculture". They can have many different forms, sizes and colours, and can live in many different environments; they are not plants.

The Science Snippet last Thursday night (July 11) was about whooping cough, of which there is apparently a 'wave' in Australia at present. Whooping cough is a respiratory illness caused by the bacterium Bordatella pertussis. It is also known as 'the 100-day cough' for reasons that should be self-apparent, and is worse in the very young and the elderly. There is a vaccine against it.

The Science Snippet of the programme last night (Thurs June 13) was about the Sun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun #), with some focus on its magnetic activity (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun ). Sunspots (dark areas visible on the Sun) typically have a magnetic field strength about 1,500 times stronger than the poles of the Sun, and the Sun regularly goes through 11-year cycles of relative magnetic activity & inactivity (it is currently going into a period of higher activity).

The Science Snippet last Thursday night (May 30) was about auroras (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora), largely due to the aurora visible in parts of Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. Auroras are natural light displays caused by disturbances in the magnetosphere by the solar 'wind'. We can expect auroras to be greater than usual in frequency & magnitude in the next year or two due to the cyclical nature of the Sun's activity.
