Terrorism in the US: what is the real threat level?

'The shadow cast by the 9/11 attack means that every such incident now tends to be seen as a new episode in a distinct and frightening era of terrorism in the mainland United States. But does this picture actually fit the historical record?'

Harry J Enten: In perspective, terror attacks are at a historic low. But the picture is more complex: major cities like Boston are still likely targets

Global Terrorism Index «

What do you think of this latest report? I can't figure out how New Zealand gets onto the list of countries impacted by terrorism when the table shows it had no fatalities and no incidents of terrorism. Doesn't that make the claims about how many countries have been affected by terrorism a little alarmist?

A ground-breaking milestone in the study of peace. For the first time, an Index has been created that ranks the nations of the world by their peacefulness and identifies some of the drivers of that peace.

Why gun control matters more than terrorism

This is an excellent question for the two presidential candidates...

Wednesday night's presidential debate is about domestic policy, but that doesn't mean the candidates can't be asked questions that use foreign policy to raise an important point about domestic issues. Pivoting off thisrecent columnby theBoston Globe'sDerrick Jackson, here's the question I'd like mod...

More Killing in Obama’s ‘War on Terror’ Than Bush’s ‘War’ | The Dissenter

It seems the war on terror represents a key line of continuity between Bush and Obama. Is this because once it became institutionalised, it was too hard to change course? Or, are there too many material interests involved in it now to change?

Michael Hayden, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director under President George W.

Terror delisting the MEK is a cynical sham

So it seems that getting officially listed or de-listed as a terrorist organisation is not an objective process based on committing terrorist acts, but is the result of political lobbying. I wonder whether terrorism scholars take note of this when they rely on official data about terrorism. There's also the legal question of whether all the US politicians who spoke in support of MEK should be prosecuted for providing support to a terrorist group. Whether the law on support for terrorism is applied seems to be politically driven too.

Richard Silverstein: The dissident group's lavish lobbying has paid off: hoping to look tough on Iran, the Obama administration has enlisted the MEK in a proxy war

The Rise of Settler Terrorism

An interesting article on a form of terrorism which doesn't always get a lot of coverage or expert analysis.

Israeli authorities in the West Bank have long worried about stopping Palestinian terrorism. Now, they need to add a new item to the agenda: stopping radical Jewish settlers who have begun attacking innocent Palestinians and Israeli soldiers alike. Jerusalem has to the stop the violence, and Washing...

DHS Crushed This Analyst for Warning About Far-Right Terror | Danger Room | Wired.com

An interesting article about the rise of far-right terrorism and the seeming unwillingness of counter-terrorism agencies to take it seriously.

Back in 2009, Daryl Johnson was an analyst at the Department of Homeland Security focusing on far-right extremist groups. But when a report he wrote about their danger sparked criticism from conservative pundits, DHS shunted Johnson aside and gutted his office. Now, with at least six dead at a Sikh ...

Terrorism and the Media: A Dangerous Symbiosis

An examination of the combination of media power and terrorism.

The media plays a central role in the calculus and framing of political violence and is put into position where it can magnify or minimize these kinds of acts.

Bravery and drone pilots

How absurd is this, and what's next? Bravery medals to the workers who make the drones? Hell, why not just give every American a medal for paying their taxes which fund the military! It's also morally disturbing, because it is a blatant attempt to wrap up extra-judicial killings in a heroic frame, thereby immunising them from criticism. Once drone operators are genuine heroes, their actions will also be heroic and beyond moral censure.

The Pentagon considers awarding war medals to those who operate America's death-delivering video games

Munich Olympics Massacre: Files Reveal Neo-Nazis Helped Palestinian Terrorists - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Interesting and possibly new perspective on the connections the PLO and Black September had in Munich leading up to the kidnapping and murder of Israeli Olympic team members in 1972.

Forty years ago, the massacre of Israeli athletes and coaches overshadowed the Munich Summer Olympics. Though it was never proved, left-wing extremists were suspected of working with the Palestinian terrorists behind the operation. But previously unreleased files seen by SPIEGEL prove that neo-Nazis...

Are Drones Obama's Legacy In War On Terrorism? : NPR

Interesting interpretation on the military 'legacy' of US Presidents. Has the use of drones changed the way we respond to terrorists? Will drones always be associated with Obama?

One privilege — or burden — of the Oval Office is that each inhabitant gets to decide how dirty to get his hands in wartime. Although the CIA program is classified, published accounts say President Obama has decided to take personal responsibility for making decisions about who drones will target an...

Deploying Informants, the FBI Stings Muslims | The Nation

Who accounts for the majority of terrorist plots in America? Is it radical Muslims? No. Is it lone psychopaths? No. Is it radical environmentalists or narco-terrorists? No. It's the FBI!

In other countries they have programmes to try and prevent extremism; in the US, they actively encourage it. Is this a rational counter-terrorism policy?

Behind nearly every “foiled terror plot” lurks a government informant sent to entrap hapless young Muslim men.

The war on terror is corrupting all it touches

During the cold war, dissidents were branded communists and soviet agents. Today, if you oppose state repression and state crime, you're branded a terrorist. In this paraoid universe, all morality is abandoned and pregnant women are rendered to torturers.

Report: U.S. trained terror group

This is no surprise at all. The US and Western powers have always sponsored terrorist groups when it's in their interests, despite all the pious rhetoric about being opposed to terrorism. Senior US officials provided open political support to the MEK in late 2010.

The New Yorker documents ample material support from the U.S. to MEK: A clear felony if true

Seven Steps to a Homeland Security Campus | The Nation

Some extraordinary information in here about the extent and reach of the terrorism industry today, especially the extent to which it as penetrated the academy in the US. This is an expression of the logic that terrorism has no limits and can be anywhere, and the result of an industry that needs to keep growing to justify its budgets. All those graduates of the homeland security training courses will need jobs afterwards...

JURIST - Forum: Hidden Torture: Behind the Plea Bargain of Majid Khan

How governments hide their use of torture in counter-terrorism?

JURIST Special Guest Columnist Andrea Prasow of Human Rights Watch says that one of the reasons Majid Khan was not tried in civilian court and was offered a plea deal by Guantanamo prosecutors was to prevent him from testifying on his mistreatment while in CIA custody...

False Flag - By Mark Perry

The state sponsorship of terrorism by Israel? I am looking forward to the day when one of the well-known 'terrorism experts' publishes an article thoroughly investigating Israeli state-sponsored terrorism.

Buried deep in the archives of America's intelligence services are a series of memos, written during the last years of President George W. Bush's administration, that describe how Israeli Mossad officers recruited operatives belonging to the terrorist group Jundallah by passing themselves off as Ame...
